1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Project Background
The world is currently grappling with one of the biggest impedance to development in the name
of Covid-19 pandemic. School programs too have been greatly affected as majority of the
schools and institutions have closed to try and stop the spread of the pandemic. However,
solutions have to be found in order to reopen schools and institutions across the world. In order
to effectively fight off this disease multifaceted approaches have to be employed. This project
therefore seeks to offer one of the solutions for speedy reopening of schools and Institutions of
higher learning across the world with specific interest in Ol’lessos Technical Training Institute.
The Project will ensure that over 5,000 Students at Ol’lessos Technical Training Institute are
able to wash their hands without touching any surfaces such as taps and soap thereby
inadvertently exposing themselves to risks of touching the virus. If by any chance any person
entering the institution had the virus on his or her hands then the virus will be washed away with
waste water connected to the institution’s sewerage line. The project will put into consideration
the large number of students at the institution and need to ensure that there will be no crowding
while students are trying to wash their hands especially during rush hour between 7:30 am to
8:30 am morning time.
1.2 Problem statement
How to make sure Students, Trainers, Essential staff and visitors wash their hands effectively
before entering the Institution’s premises without overcrowding at the institution’s point of
entrance.
1.3 Purpose statement
To develop an automatic hand washing machine to mitigate the Covid -19 pandemic
1.4 Objectives
3
a) To design the automatic hand washing machine.
b) To develop a hand washing machine prototype.
c) To roll out the product for use.
1.5 Proposed solutions/justification
The proposed solution is a 15 hand washing stations automatic hand washing machine that
dispenses soap followed by water. The system allows the user time (20 seconds according to
World Health Organization guidelines on hand washing) to scrub and scratch his or her hand
with soap before dispensing water. The system will be connected to the Institution’s water and
sewerage system. One station will first be made for testing before the same is replicated to get 15
stations.
The time taken by one user to hand wash is 30 seconds. That is 20 seconds after soap has been
dispensed then water is dispensed for another 10 seconds for rinsing. Therefore one hand
washing machine in one hour will serve 120 users. In one hour all the 15 stations will serves
1,800 users. Therefore during rush hour the system will be able serve a large influx of students,
Trainers and essential staff coming in to the institution. Taking the Institution’s total population
at 6,000 people it will take the system 3 hours 20 minutes to serve all users in the institution and
strictly according to World Health Organization’s guidelines for hand washing.
The system will run on solar power but for the first one station for testing it will be powered by
mains supply (Kenya Power).
2.0 ENGINEERING WORKS
2.1 Components- Hardware
The following are the electrical components that will form the core part of the system/machine.
Arduino Uno Microcontroller
Ultra-sonic sensor
Connecting wires
Switch
9V Lithium battery
4
Submersible 12V dc pump
2.2 Operating instructions (How it works)
When the machine senses the presence of hand around the place where the nozzle is located the
programmed microcontroller will instruct pump 1 for soap to dispense soap to the hand after this
the microcontroller will count 20 seconds before it instructs the second pump 2 to activate
thereby pumping in water for another 10 seconds for hand rinsing. This process repeats itself
once the previous cycle of 30 seconds has ended and if there is a presence of hand again at the
nozzle area of the system/machine.
2.3 Technical structure
2.3.1 Electrical circuit diagram
2.3.3 Software programming
The program will be developed by the team.
5
3.0 ASSEMBLING
After collection of all the components assembling will commence immediately after the
microcontroller has been programmed accordingly.
4.0 TESTING
The assembled machine will be tested to see if it works as expected.
5.0 PRODUCTION
After the first machine working the same will be replicated for 15 hand washing stations.
6.0 MAINTAINANCE
The Institution has enough experts at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department to
carry out any kind of Repairs and maintenance needed on the system.
