EX NO: DATE :
SINGLE PHASE CYCLOCONVERTER
AIM :
To study the operation of a 1Φ cycloconverter and observe the output
waveform for different output.
APPARATUS REQUIRED :
S.NO APPARATUS TYPE /RANGE QUANTITY
1. Cycloconverter trainer kit - 1
2. True RMS Meter - 1
3. Differential Module 0 – 400 v 1
4. DSO - 1
5. Load Variable frequency 1
6. Attenuation Probe 1
THEORY :
The power circuit has four SCR’s , resistance load and current limiting reactor
𝑑𝑖
and snubber circuit has been provided for 𝑑𝑡 and 𝑑𝑣
𝑑𝑡
protection. The circuit is used
for obtaining a 1Φ low frequency output form. One group of SCR’s produce
positive polarity of load voltage and other group of SCR’s produce negative
polarity of load voltage.
SCR1 and SCR2 are gated together, depending upon the polarity of the input only
one SCR of them will conduct. When P is positive, SCR1 will conduct and when
P is negative, SCR2 will conduct. Thus, on both the half cycles of the input, the
voltage will be positive.
The SCR will turn off by natural commutation at the end of every half cycle of
output with resistive load. The output voltage waveform for resistive load is
shown.

PROCEDURE:
1. In the given module connect K1G1, K2G2 , K3G3, K4G4 with help of patch
chords.
2. Also connect A1K3, A2K4,A3K1.
3. Connect +12 v supply.
4. Switch on the trainer switch and then the supply connections are turned
ON.
5. According to frequency required SA and SB are also turned ON.
6. Input and output waveforms are also noted from CRO.
