Today, we are going to discuss the basic


elements of choreography.

But before that let us read first our learning


objectives.

As you can see in the video earlier, we can
see a lot of hand and body movements as well
as formations they choreograph the dance
smoothly.

dances. It is the art of composing ballets
and other dances which involve planning

patterns of dancers. Choreography
demonstrates the language of
movements.
There are two types of Choreography. One is
improvisation and the other is planned.
Improvisation is where dancers get a general
guideline on what to do, but some movements
can be interpreted by themselves. Whereas, a
planned choreography is dictated to the
dancers in specific details. This type of
choreography is the one mostly used in all
kinds of dance styles from ballet to street
dance.

As a dancer, it is very important to know the


basic elements of choreography, which is the
shapes, actions/movements, time, space,
formation, focus, direction, and level.

The first element of dance is Shapes. So, who Basic Elements of Choreography
can read the definition of Shapes? Yes,

1. Shapes - refer to the lines that the
body forms like straight or curved,
symmetrical or asymmetrical.
In creating a dance steps, dancers must
possessed a variety of shapes in their body.

Create a simple dance routine applying the
basic elements of choreography, you may only
choose one or two among the eight basic
elements of choreography.

In 5 minutes preparations show your


performance in front. And you will be graded
according to the criteria.

So, let’s recap our lesson for today class!

In our overall topic choreography can be


broken down into the following eight (8)
elements namely: shapes,
actions/movements, time, space, formation,
focus, direction, and level. We can apply those
basic elements of choreography in the
different dance genres.
