POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester: Spring Year : 2024

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Applied Mechanics I Pass Marks : 45
Time : 3 hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) The resultant of the four forces acting on the anchor shown is known 7
to be R = 553i + 782j N. determine the force Q3.

b) Two spheres S1 and S2 of radii 105 mm and 55 mm respectively are 8

placed on a container as shown in the figure. Sphere S1 of mass 50 kg
is suspended with a string AB of length 205 mm and sphere S2 of mass
25 kg is placed on top of it. Determine the tension is AB and the
reaction from the container.

OR (1b)
A force P of magnitude 2400 N acts on the frame shown at point E.
Determine the moment of P i) about point O ii) about line OF

2. a) The co-efficient of static and kinetic friction between the 160-kg block 7
and the inclined plane are 0.24 and 0.19, respectively. Determine:
i. The frictional force acting on the block when P is applied with a
magnitude of 290 N to the block at rest;
ii. The force P required to initiate motion up the incline from rest.

b) Analyse the forces in AB, BC and BD members of the given truss by 8

method of section.

3. a) Locate centroid of the shaded area as shown in figure given below with 7
respect to X and Y axes. (All dimension in mm)

b) Find the moment of inertia of the geometry about x and y axes. 8

4. a) Write clearly the concept and methods of free body diagram with 5
relevant examples.
b) Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for the given beam. 10
Also locate point of contra-flexure, if any.

5. a) Define rectilinear motion. The motion of the particle is defined by the 7

relation a= 9t+5, where ‘a’ is expressed in m/sec2 and t in sec. at t=0,
v= 3 m/s and x= 15m.
i. Write equations of motion.
ii. Determine the position, velocity and acceleration at t =4s.
b) The rotation of rod OA about O is defined by the relation θ=3t2 where 8
θ is expressed in radians and t in seconds. Collar B slides along the rod
in such a way that its distance from O is r=30t2-10t3, where r is
expressed in mm and t in seconds. When t= 1s, Determine: a) velocity
of collar b) total acceleration of the collar.

6. a) The bob of 5m pendulum describes an arc of a circle in a vertical plane. 6
If the tension in the cord is 3 times the weight of bob for the position
when the bob is displaced through an angle 30° from its mean position.
Find the velocity and acceleration of bob for this situation.

b) In the figure given below (left), the coefficient of friction between 9

blocks A and C and horizontal surfaces are 𝜇𝑠 = 0.24 and 𝜇𝑘 = 0.18.
Knowing that MA= 6kg, MB= 12 kg and MC= 12 kg. Determine:
i. The tension in the chord
ii. The acceleration of each block

OR (6b)
The two blocks shown above (right) are originally at rest. Neglecting
the masses of pulleys and the effect of friction in the pulleys and
assuming that the coefficients of friction between block A and the
horizontal surface as 0.25, determine:
i. the acceleration of each block
ii. the tension in the cable
7. Write short notes on: (Any two) 2×5
a) Concept of particles and rigid bodies
b) Co-ordinate system in Applied Mechanics
c) Conservation of linear and angular momentum
