9. Description of The first part of the post from September 2024 to March 2025 is based at Glasgow
training post Dental Hospital. The Oral Surgery department at Glasgow Dental Hospital & School
offers a broad range of clinical activities and experience in the following; consultant
clinics, minor Oral Surgery sessions, supervision and clinical teaching of BDS
students, management of emergency patients and experience in either sedation
sessions or theatre lists at non base hospital sites. There is a regular Oral Surgery
journal club, at which DCTs are expected to present, to benefit from appraisal by
senior staff.
In the Public Dental Services (PDS) rotation from March 2025 to August 2025 you
will have the opportunity to work in a variety of locations across PDS with a range of

clinical supervisors. You will be involved in/have experience of the delivery of high-
quality dental care for vulnerable PDS patient groups, including children and adults
with special care requirements and those attending for unscheduled care. This will
include those more medically complex patients, those requiring additional equipment
to facilitate care, or those who require care to be delivered in a domiciliary setting. In
behaviour management you will become familiar with acclimatisation techniques,
proficient in the use of alternative treatment adjuncts such as Silver Diamine Fluoride
and Single Tooth Anaesthesia with the Wand®. You will receive supported training
in Inhalation Sedation with experienced PDS practitioners and may also have the
opportunity to participate in GA sessions. There will be opportunities for experience
in National Primary Care Public Health programmes, such as the National Dental
Inspection Programme, Childsmile, Caring for Smiles. There will be a requirement to
travel within the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde health board area to different PDS
clinics.

13. Educational There is a Scotland-wide education programme for Dental Core Trainees which is
programme designed to match the DCT curriculum. The programme has four themes running
summary through each year of Dental Core Training. These are: Clinical, Communication,
Career Development Skills and Quality Improvement & Patient Safety. Posts begin
with a local health board and NES induction, followed by face-to-face study events
throughout the year, supported by Turas Learn. These events include all Dental
Core Trainees in Scotland, as does the annual DCT conference.
All trainees have access to study leave time (in line with terms and conditions of
service) and budget. This is predominantly to fund attendance of DCTs at the
compulsory NES Educational events, however funding may be available to
contribute to the cost of other courses linked to an agreed PDP.
DCT posts include time for self-directed learning and trainees are encouraged to
use this time for personal study and to complete quality improvement projects.
