CHAPTER TWO
The Scarecrow, The Tin Man and The Lion
15
16
Dorothy and the Scarecrow oiled the Tin Man. He began
to move slowly. He moved his head first, and then his arms
and legs.
“Thank you very much,” he said. “Why are you here?”
“We are going to the Emerald City to see the Great Oz,”
said Dorothy.
“Why do you want to see him?”
“I want to go back to Kansas. He can help me.”
“Can he give me a heart?”
“I think so.”
“Can I join you?”
“Come along,” said the Scarecrow.
“Can you put the oil can in your basket?” the Tin Man
asked Dorothy. “I may need it.”
Dorothy put the can in the basket and they all walked
along the yellow brick road.
“How far is it to the Emerald City?” Dorothy asked the
Tin Man.
“I think it’s a long way.”
At that moment they saw a big lion. The lion had long
yellow teeth. He started to run after Toto. Dorothy ran up to
the lion and hit it on the nose with her basket.
“Don’t hurt my dog!” she shouted.
“Don’t hit me,” said the Lion. He looked afraid. “I didn’t
hurt him. Don’t hit me again, please.”
“Why are you afraid?” asked Dorothy. “Are you a
coward?”
____________________________________________________________________________________________
coward (n): a person who is afraid of danger and unpleasant things
17
“Yes, I am,” cried the Lion. “I am a big coward. I think I
was born this way.”
“But the King of Animals shouldn’t be a coward,” said the
Scarecrow.
“I know. It makes me unhappy.”
“We are going to the Emerald City to find the Wizard of
Oz,” said Dorothy. “He will help us. I want to go back to
Kansas. The Scarecrow wants to have a brain, and the Tin
Man wants to have a heart. You can come with us. He can
make you brave.”
“Oh, thank you very much,” said the Lion. “I would like
to be brave.”
So the Lion joined them. Toto was afraid of him at first but
then, they became good friends.
That night, Dorothy and Toto slept under a big tree. In the
morning, they ate their last slice of bread.
“What are we going to eat for dinner?” asked Dorothy.
“I can go to the forest and kill an animal for you,” said the
Lion.
“Please don’t kill an animal,” said the Tin Man. “I will cry
and my body will rust again.”
They walked along the yellow brick road. They came to a
big river a few hours later.
“Oh, no!” said Dorothy. “How can we get across?”
“I’m afraid,” said the Lion. “But I think I can jump across.”
“You can carry us on your back,” said the Scarecrow.
“One at a time.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________
brave (adj): showing no fear of dangerous or difficult things
18
19
“I will try it,” said the Lion. “Who will go first?”
“I will,” said the Scarecrow.
The Scarecrow sat on the Lion’s back. The Lion jumped
and landed on the other side. It was Dorothy’s turn next.
She held Toto in her arms and climbed on the Lion’s back.
The Lion jumped across the river again. The Lion turned for
the third time and got the Tin Man. All of them were on the
other side now.
On the way they heard some strange noises.
“Kalidahs live in this part of the forest,” said the Lion.
“What are Kalidahs?” asked Dorothy.
“They are beasts. They have bear bodies and tiger heads. I
am afraid of them.”
“Well, I’m not surprised.”
Soon they came to another river. This one was very big.
The Lion couldn’t jump across it.
“I have an idea,” said the Scarecrow. “Look at the big tree
next to the river. The Tin Man can cut it down. It will fall to
the other side. We can walk across it.”
“That is a great idea,” said Dorothy.
The Tin Man started to work and he soon cut down the
tree. The tree fell across the river.
They started to walk on the tree. Suddenly, they saw great
beasts. The beasts ran towards them.
“They are the Kalidahs!” said the Lion.
“Quick!” said the Scarecrow. “Let’s cross over.”
So Dorothy went first with Toto, and the Tin Man
followed them. The Scarecrow went next. Lastly, the Lion
crossed over. They were safe.

B. Reading pictures
Look at the pictures in Chapter Three and talk about:
A fter a long day and a long walk, they began to see small
green houses. They also saw little people in green
clothes.
“Everything is green here,” said Dorothy. “I think we are
close to the Emerald City. Toto and I are hungry. Let’s stop at
the next house.”
They went to a house and knocked on the door. A woman
opened the door.
“What do you want child?” she asked.
“Can we spend the night at your house?” asked Dorothy.
“Is that lion with you?”
“Yes, but he is a great coward. He won’t hurt anybody.”
“Well, you can come in then.”
So they all entered the house. There were two children
and a man in the house. The woman set the table.
“Where are you all going?” asked the man.
“To the Emerald City,” said Dorothy. “We are going to see
the Great Oz.”
“Are you sure that Oz will see you?”
“Why not?”
“No one can see the Great Oz. He sits on his throne all
day. Why do you wish to see him?”
“I want him to give me a brain,” said the Scarecrow.
“I want him to give me a heart,” said the Tin Man.
“I want him to give me courage,” said the Lion.
“I want him to send me back to Kansas,” said Dorothy.
“Well, Oz can do anything,” said the man. “But first you
must see him. He doesn’t like to see anybody. Good luck.”
25
26
The woman gave them a room. Dorothy and Toto went to
sleep. The Lion guarded the door. The Scarecrow and the Tin
Man didn’t sleep.
The next morning, they left the house. They began
walking again. Soon they saw a beautiful city in front of
them. It was the Emerald City at last.
The friends came to a green door, and stopped. There was
a little man at the door. His clothes were green. He was green
himself. There was a large green box next to him.
“Why did you come here?” asked the little man.
“We would like to see the Great Wizard,” said Dorothy.
“Nobody sees the Wizard.”
“We must see him. Please ask him.”
“All right, I will ask him. But first you must wear these
glasses.”
The little man opened the box next to him. There were lots
of glasses in it.
“You must wear your glasses all the time,” said the man.
“The Wizard wants this.”
So they all put on their glasses. The little man put his
glasses on and he opened the gate. The friends followed him
through the Emerald City. Everything in the city was green –
men, women, children, houses, streets, shops…
They reached the Palace of Oz. There was a soldier at the
door.
“These strangers want to see the Great Oz,” said the little
man.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
stranger (n): someone you do not know
27
“Come inside,” said the soldier. “I will carry your message
to him.”
The soldier went and after a short time he came back.
“Did you see him?” asked Dorothy.
“No. We never see him. But I spoke to him. He will accept
you one by one. He wants to see the girl first.”
“Thank you very much,” said Dorothy. “That is very kind
of Oz.”
Then, the soldier went away. A green girl came in. She
took Dorothy to a green door.
“The Wizard is in there,” she said. “He is waiting for you.”
Dorothy went in. There was a very big head on a green
chair. He had no body, no arms and no legs – only a head.
“I am Oz,” the Head said. “Who are you? What do you
want?”
“I am Dorothy. I came here to ask for your help.”
“Where did you get those silver shoes?”
“From the Wicked Witch of the East. My house fell on her
and killed her.”
“What is that thing on your face?”
“A kiss. The good Witch of the North gave me a kiss. She
sent me to you.”
“And what do you want?”
“Send me back to Kansas. My Aunt Em and Uncle Henry
are there.”
“Why should I do that?”
“Because you are strong and I am weak. You are the Great
Wizard and I am just a little girl.”
“But you are strong. You killed the Witch of the East.”
28
29
“I didn’t want to kill her. It just happened.”
“I will help you. But you must help me, too.”
“What should I do?”
“Kill the Wicked Witch of the West.”
“But I cannot!”
“Kill the Witch of the West and I will send you back to
Kansas.”
“But how can I kill her?”
The Head didn’t answer. Dorothy left the room.
“There is no hope for me,” she said to her friends. “He
wants me to kill the Witch of the West but I cannot kill
anybody.”
Her friends were sorry for her. They couldn’t do anything
for her. Dorothy told them about the Head. Then, they went
into the Wizard’s room one by one. First the Scarecrow went
in, then the Tin Man and lastly the Lion.
Later, they all met in a long green room.
“That’s strange,” said the Scarecrow. “I didn’t see a Head,
I saw a beautiful woman. I asked for a brain but she said,
“You must help Dorothy.“
“I saw a big animal with two heads,” said the Tin Man. “I
wanted a heart and it said the same thing to me.”
“What did you see, Lion?” asked Dorothy.
“I saw a ball of fire,” said the Lion. “I wanted him to give
me courage. He wanted me to help you. I was afraid and ran
away.”
“What are we going to do?” asked Dorothy.
“We must find the Witch of the West and kill her,” said
the Scarecrow.

CHAPTER FOUR
The Wicked Witch of the West
38
39
“I am everywhere.”
“You gave us a promise. We came for that.”
“What promise?”
“You promised to give me a brain,” said the Scarecrow.
“You promised to give me a heart,” said the Tin Man.
“You promised to give me courage,” said the Lion.
“And you promised to send me back to Kansas,” said
Dorothy.
“Did you kill the Wicked Witch of the West?” asked Oz.
“Yes,” said Dorothy. “I melted her with a bucket of
water.”
“Come back tomorrow,” said Oz. “I will think about it
again.”
“We can’t wait!” said the Scarecrow.
The Lion wanted to make the Wizard afraid. He gave a
loud roar. Toto was afraid. He jumped away from the Lion.
He hit a screen near the wall, and it fell over. There was a
bald man behind it.
“Who are you?” asked the Tin Man.
“Please don’t hurt me!” said the old man. “I am the
Wizard of Oz.”
“But the Wizard of Oz is a big head,” said Dorothy.
“You are wrong,” said the Tin Man. “The Wizard is a big
animal with two heads.”
“No,” said the Scarecrow. “The Wizard is a beautiful
woman.”
“The Wizard is a ball of fire,” said the Lion.
“You are all wrong,” said the old man. “I am the Wizard.
Well… not a real wizard. I don’t know any magic.”
40
41
“Not a real wizard?” asked Dorothy.
“Be quiet, my dear. Don’t speak so loud.”
“Who are you?”
“I am just a common man. I know some tricks, but no
magic.”
“Does anybody know you are not a real Wizard?”
“No, no one in the Land of Oz knows. Only you four, and
myself. It was a great mistake to take you into my room. I
usually do not see anybody.”
“But I don’t understand,” said Dorothy. “How did I see
you as a Head?”
“That was one of my tricks. You all saw me in different
shapes.”
“How?” asked the Scarecrow.
“I will tell you about it. Come with me.”
They all went to a small room at the back of the Throne
Room. The Great Head was there. It was made of paper.
“I hung it from the ceiling,” he said. “Here are the other
things I use.”
He showed them a woman’s dress, a mask and a ball of
cotton. The ball of cotton was burnt with oil and it looked
like a ball of fire.
“You should be ashamed of yourself,” said the Scarecrow.
“I am,” said the old man. “But I couldn’t do anything. Sit
down please, I will tell you my story.”

47
48
“I was very afraid of them because I had no magical
powers. There were four of them in this country. They ruled
the people in the North, South, East and West. The Witches
of the North and South were good. But the Witches of the
East and West were wicked. I was afraid of them for years. I
was happy when I heard that your house fell on the Wicked
Witch of the East. I am ashamed but I cannot keep my
promises.”
“I think you are a very bad man,” said Dorothy.
“Oh, my dear. I am a good man, but I am a bad Wizard.”
“Can’t you give me a brain?” asked the Scarecrow.
“You don’t need any,” said Oz. “You are learning
something every day.”
“That is true but I am unhappy because I don’t have a
brain in my head.”
“Come tomorrow, and I will put a brain in your head.”
“Oh, thank you!” said the Scarecrow happily.
“What about my courage?” asked the Lion.
“You have plenty of courage,” said Oz. “Everybody is
afraid of dangers.”
“That is true, but I am unhappy. You should give me
courage.”
“Well, I will give you courage tomorrow.”
“What about my heart?” asked the Tin Man.
“I think you shouldn’t ask for a heart,” said Oz. “It makes
most people unhappy.”
“It doesn’t matter. I want to have a heart.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________
rule (v): to have control and authority over an area and its people
49
“Very well,” said Oz. “Come back tomorrow and you will
have a heart.”
“And how can I go back to Kansas?” asked Dorothy.
“We will think about it,” said Oz. “Give me two or three
days to think. I will find a way. Until then, you will be my
guests at my palace.”
They all agreed.
The next morning the Scarecrow was very happy.
“I’m going to Oz to get my brain at last,” he said to his
friends.
“I like you as you are,” said Dorothy.
“You will like my ideas more,” said the Scarecrow and he
said goodbye to his friends.
The Scarecrow went to the Throne Room.
“Come in,” said Oz.
The Scarecrow went in. The little man sat down by the
window.
“I came for my brain,” said the Scarecrow.
“Oh, yes. Sit down, please.”
“You can take my head off and put it back.”
Oz took the straw out of his head. He put some needles in
the straw and mixed them. Then, he put the straw back to his
head and put his head on his body again.
“Here,” he said. “You have a new brain, now.”
The Scarecrow thanked the little man and left the room
happily.
“How do you feel?” asked Dorothy.
“I feel smart,” said the Scarecrow.
50
51
“Now I am going to get my heart,” said the Tin Man, and
he went to see Oz.
The Tin Man walked to the Throne Room and knocked on
the door.
“Come in,” said Oz.
“I came for my heart.”
“Very well. I will cut a hole in your chest and put your
heart in the right place. I hope it won’t hurt you.”
“Oh, no. I won’t feel it.”
So Oz cut a small hole in his chest. Then he went to the
drawers and took out a heart. He made it out of silk.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” he asked.
“It is,” said the Tin Man. “Is it a kind heart?”
“Oh, very.”
Oz put the heart in the Tin Man’s chest.
“There,” he said, “now you have a heart.”
“Thank you very much. You are very kind.”
Then the Tin Man went back to his friends. It was the
Lion’s turn now.
The Lion walked to the Throne Room and knocked on the
door.
“Come in,” said Oz.
“I came here for my courage,” said the Lion.
“Very well,” said Oz. “I will give it to you.”
He went to a cupboard and took out a green bottle. He
gave it to the Lion.
“Drink it.”
“What is it?” asked the Lion.
“There is courage in it.”
52
The Lion drank it quickly.
“How do you feel now?” asked Oz.
“Full of courage,” said the Lion and he went back to his
friends.
“It was easy to make the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the
Lion happy,” thought Oz. “But I don’t know how to send
Dorothy back to Kansas.”
…
Dorothy didn’t hear from Oz for three days. She felt
hopeless. But on the fourth day, Oz called her. She went to
the Throne Room.
“Welcome my dear,” said Oz. “Sit down, please. I found a
way to get you out of the country.”
“And back to Kansas?”
“Well, I’m not sure about Kansas. I don’t know the way to
Kansas. You will cross the desert first, and then you can find
Kansas.”
“How can I cross the desert?”
“Through the air. I can make a hot air balloon and we will
go together.”
“Are you coming with us?”
“Yes, I am old and tired. I am always in this room. I don’t
see anybody. I want to go to Kansas with you and work in a
circus again.”
“I will be very happy.”
“Thank you. Will you help me sew the silk and make the
balloon?”
So they began to work on the balloon. It took three days to
finish.
53
54
On the fourth day, they were ready to go. Oz got into the
basket and said to everybody in a loud voice:
“I am going to visit my brother in the clouds. The
Scarecrow will rule the country.”
Then he got ready to go up.
“Come, Dorothy,” he said. “Hurry up! The balloon will fly
away.”
“I can’t find Toto anywhere,” said Dorothy.
“Leave the dog and come quickly. The rope is going to
break!”
“I cannot to leave him!”
She looked around and found Toto. She picked him up
and ran to the balloon. The rope broke before she got there.
The balloon went up into the sky.
“Come back!” shouted Dorothy.
“I can’t hear you, dear,” said Oz. “Goodbye!”
And nobody saw Oz again.
“Oh, no!” cried Dorothy. “How can I go back home?”
…
Dorothy cried for a long time. She lost Oz and she lost her
hope.
“We can live here together,” said the Scarecrow. “You
know I am the new ruler.”
“I don’t want to live here,” said Dorothy. “I want to go to
Kansas and live with my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.”
“Well, what can we do?” asked the Tin Man.
“I will ask the soldier at the door,” said the Scarecrow.
Then he went to the soldier.
55
“This little girl wants to cross the desert,” he said. “How
can she do it?”
“I don’t know” said the soldier. “Nobody crossed the
desert before.”
“Is there anybody that can help me?” asked Dorothy.
“Maybe Glinda.”
“Who is Glinda?”
“She is the Witch of the South. She is a good witch. She
can help you.”
The next morning Dorothy and her friends went south to
find the Witch. After a long journey, they found the Witch’s
beautiful castle.
“Why did you come to the South Country?” asked a
guardian at the door.
“To see the Good Witch of the South,” said Dorothy.
“I must ask Glinda. Tell me your names.”
They all said who they were. The guardian went into the
castle. After a few minutes he came back.
“Glinda will see you,” he said.
“Thank you very much,” said Dorothy.
They went to see the Good Witch of the South. She was
beautiful and young. She had red hair and blue eyes. Her
dress was white.
“What can I do for you, dear child?” she asked.
Dorothy told the Witch her whole story.
“And now my wish is to go back to Kansas. Aunt Em and
Uncle Henry are probably worried.”
Glinda kissed Dorothy’s face.
“I am sure I can tell you the way,” she said.
56
57
“Thank you very much,” said Dorothy.
Glinda looked at Dorothy’s feet.
“Your Silver Shoes, dear,” she said. “They will carry you
over the desert. They have wonderful powers. Click your
heels three times and tell the shoes what to do.”
“I will ask them to take me to Kansas.”
Dorothy hugged all her friends.
“I’m glad that I found you and we became friends,” she
said.
She took Toto in her arms and clicked her heels three
times.
“Take me home to Aunt Em and Uncle Henry!” she said.
In a second Dorothy was in Kansas. She saw Aunt Em and
Uncle Henry’s new house in front of her. Toto jumped out of
her arms and ran to the house.
Dorothy stood up and saw that she didn’t have the Silver
Shoes. They were lost forever. She wasn’t sad about that.
“I am happy to be back. There’s no place like home,” she
said.
…
What about Dorothy’s friends?
Well, as you know the Scarecrow became the ruler of
the Emerald City. The Tin Man went to the Country of the
Winkies and became their ruler. And the Lion became the
King of the Animals in the forest.
Everybody was very happy.
