Non-fiction

Autobiography - the biography of oneself narrated by oneself.

Biography - a usually written history of a person's life

Journal - a record of what you have done, or of descriptions or thoughts, written each day or frequently
over a long period; a diary

Essay - a short piece of writing on a particular subject, often expressing personal views

Diary - a record of events, transactions, or observations kept daily or at frequent intervals

Narrative Non-fiction - uses literary techniques to present factual events in a compelling, story-like
manner, aiming to be both informative and engaging.

FICTION
Legend - a traditional story or group of stories told about a particular person or place.

Myth - a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without
a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation

Novella - novella is a narrative prose fiction whose length is shorter than most novels, but longer than
most novelettes and short stories.

Novel - an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals especially with human
experience through a usually connected sequence of events.

Short story -a work of prose fiction that can be read in one sitting—usually between 20 minutes to an
hour

Fable - short moral story, esp one with animals as characters.

Dramatic

Comedy - a type of dramatic work that is amusing and satirical in its tone, mostly having a cheerful
ending

Tradegy - genre that focuses around a noble character who struggles against strong external challenges

Melodrama - a dramatic work characterized by exaggerated emotions, sensational plots, and often
stereotypical characters, prioritizing plot and action over character development.

Farce - a comic dramatic piece that uses highly improbable situations, stereotyped characters,
extravagant exaggeration, and violent horseplay
Lyric

Sonnet -14-line poem, typically written in iambic pentameter, following a specific rhyme scheme and
often exploring themes of love or other profound ideas.

Elegy - a mournful, reflective poem or song, typically lamenting the death of an individual or a lost
cause, but it can also explore themes of loss, grief, and the universal experience of mortality.

Ode - formal, lyric poem, often ceremonial, that expresses strong feelings of admiration or praise for a
person, place, thing, or idea, frequently employing elevated language and structured stanzas.

Narrative

Epic - a long, narrative poem, often in elevated style, that recounts the heroic deeds of a legendary or
historical figure, or a group of people, and often explores themes of cultural identity and moral lessons.

Ballad - a narrative poem, often with a musical quality, telling a story in a simple, rhythmic language,
often with a focus on a specific event or character.

FERNANDO MA. GUERRERO

• Known as the "Prince of Filipino Lyric Poets” in Spanish.

• Write a book of poems entitled Crisalidas.

• Paz Manguera Latorena was born on Jan. 17, 1908 in Boac, Marinduque. She was the oldest aPAZ

mong the ten children of Magda Manuera and Ricardo Latorena.

• In 1926, she took up Education at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Manila where she also
attended a short story writing class under Paz Marquez-Benitez.

• She won the third prize in Jose Garcia Villa's Roll of Honor for the Best Stories of 1927 for her story,
“The Small Key".

PAZ MARQUEZ-BENITEZ

• This day in 1984, educator Paz Marquez-Benitez, who authored the first Filipino modern English-
language short story “Dead Stars," was born in Lucena City, Quezon. She was also the founder of the
first women's magazine in the country, the Woman's Home journal.
JOSE GARCIA VILLA

• Jose Garcia Villa (1908-97) is best known as a modernist poet in Philippine literature whose
experiments and audacity brought him both notoriety and fame. Before he because a poet, however, he
was a painter. He considered painting his “first love” and actively painted and drew in the 1920s and
1930s. While poetry eventually took precedence, the visual arts remained a constant in Villa's life and
work-as inspiration, influence, and self-expression.
