ANSU/BHMA A156.20-2006 Revision of ANSVBHMA A156.20-2001 sy, (CAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR STRAP AND TEE HINGES, AND HASPS. bullers hardware manufacturers SPONSOR BUILDERS HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, INC. AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE, INC. Approved April 17, 2006 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD An American National Standard implies a consensus of those substantially concemed with its scope and provisions. An American National Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the consumer, and the general public. The existence of an American National Standard does not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the Standard or not, from manufacturing, marketing, purchasing or using products, processes, or procedures not conforming to the Standard. American National Standards are subject to periodic review and users are cautioned to obtain the latest editions. CAUTION NOTICE: This American National Standard may be revised or withdrawn at any time. The procedures of the American National Standards Institute require that action be taken to reaffirm, revise, or withdraw this Standard no later than five years from the date of publication, Publishers of American National Standards may receive current information on all Standards by calling or writing the American National Standards Institute. Published by BUILDERS HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, INC. 355 Lexington Avenue, 15" Floor New York, New York 10017 www. buildershardware.com Copyright 2006 by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, Inc. Not to be reproduced without specific authorization from BHMA Printed in the USA ‘This Standard was approved by ANSI under the Canvass Method, The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, Inc. was accredited on 21 March 1983 by ANSI as a sponsor using the canvass method. FOREWORD (This Foreword is not a part of ANSUBHMA A156.20) ‘The general classification of builders hardware includes a wide variety of items which are divided into several categories. To recognize this diversity, a sectional classification system has been established. ‘Strap and Tee Hinges, and Hasps is one such section and this Standard is the result of the collective efforts of members of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, Inc. who manufacture this product. The total Product Standards effort is, therefore, a collection of sections, each covering a specific category of items, ‘The BHMA recognizes that errors will be found, items will become obsolete, and new products, ‘methods and materials will be developed. With this in mind, the Association plans to update, corect and revise these Standards on a regular basis. In most cases, products have been described in grade levels related to their durability. Grade classifications indicate levels only within their own product categories. Choice of grade and specific product are made on the basis of utility, aesthetics, security objectives and end use desired. ‘The BHMA numbers which indicate types and functions of hardware do not identify size or finish and are not intended to be used without necessary supplementary information. Individual manufacturers’ catalogs are consulted. TABLE OF CONTENTS: 1. SCOPE.. 2. DEFINITIONS.. 3. GENERAL. . TABLE I TEST VALUES FOR STRAP AND TEE HINGES 4. HINGE CYCLE TEST........... 5. A minus tolerance of 1/16 in (1.6 mm) is permitted. Dimensions are permitted to be exceeded within the functional limitations of the product. 4, HINGE CYCLE TEST 4.1 Procedure set-up Using the test door described in 3.4.1, mount hinges in accordance with 3.4.2 & 3.43. Before test, each mounted and loaded specimen shall be accurately measured to determine any vertical or lateral clearance between leaves and knuckles. Measurements shall be taken at mid-travel of door. Angle of opening shall be the same for final measurements as for original measurements within 2 degrees. Vertical measurement is between adjacent jamb and door knuckles. Lateral measurement is between inner edge of jamb leaf and adjacent door knuckle. If the lateral measurement location is at the center of the hinge, one measurement per hinge at the center shall suffice. If the lateral measurement location is not at the center of the hinge, two measurements, as equally distant from center of hinge as practicable, shall be taken; the qualifying lateral measurement is the average of these two. 4.2 Cycle Test Cycle the hinges through 90 degrees for 100,000 cycles. At the conclusion of the cycle testing, each specimen shall again be measured as in 5.1 to determine the displacement between leaves and knuckles, Wear is determined as the difference between final and initial measurements. Record measurements of wear for all hinges. The measurements of the greatest wear shall be compared to the permissible figures. The hinges passing the test shall comply with the vertical and lateral wear requirements below: 4.3 Requirements Cycle Test Requirements Vertical and Lateral Wear Allowable Maximum Bearing Grade | Grade 1 Grade 2 (010 inches (25 mm) (020 inches (Sm) 030 inches (73 mm) 5, HINGE PERMANENT SET TEST PROCEDURE & REQUIREMENT 5.1 Lateral shift The lateral shift of doors away from jamb shall not exceed .060 in (1.5 mm) when tested in the following manner. 5.2. Door position Measure the horizontal position of the door at the top hinge, using the dial indicator, with the door in the closed position. 5.3 Add test weight Add the test weight, as indicated in the chart for the hinge, at the outer edge of the door 5.4 Open and close door Open the door to the 90 degree open position and return to the closed position, 5.5 Remove the test weight 5.6 Remeasure door position Measure the horizontal position of the door as in 5.2. The difference between the two measurements is the horizontal set of the door (or lateral shift), 6. STRENGTH TEST FOR HASPS 6.1 Mounting The hasp shall be mounted in the closed position on a steel plate using machine screws of a size equivalent to the fasteners provided with the hasp. The hasp shall be fastened with a padlock having a shackle with a nominal diameter of 0.250 in (6.4 mm). 6.2 Fixed Staple Type 6.2.1 A torque measuring device shall be applied to the staple in a plane parallel to the mounting surface. ‘The torque shall be applied gradually using a nominal 0.375 in (9.5 mm) diameter hardened steel rod and sustained for a period of 30 seconds. If staple opening does not accommodate both padlock hasp and torque rod, torque shall be applied by inserting torque rod through locked padlock shackle throat. 6.2.2. After application of the appropriate minimum torque, as indicated below, the padlock shall continue to bbe secured to the staple and the staple to the hasp leaf preventing disengagement of the hasp.
