INDRODUCTION

Plastic waste management remains a significant environmental

challenge, particularly in rural communities where access to proper waste

disposal facilities is often limited. In many areas, burning plastic has become

a common practice due to convenience and the lack of alternative disposal

methods. However, this method poses serious threats to both human health

provide insights into the environmental awareness of the residents and their

level of engagement in sustainable waste management practices.

The findings will serve as a foundation for developing targeted

interventions, raising public awareness, and promoting alternative solutions

that align with both community needs and environmental sustainability.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

“Most of the studies have focused on some aspects of burning plastic like

environmental impact of plastic shopping bags, can nearby communities and

environment. Very few research has been done on the analysis of

environmental impact of burning plastic.

The impact of burning plastic on local environments have garnered

attention due to its potential harm. Existing literature highlights the negative

consequences, including pollution, soil contamination and adverse health

effects on community members: studies emphasizes the need for

comprehensive assessment to understand the perceptions and experience of

individuals directly affected by such practices: community based research is

crucial for developing sustainable solutions and mitigating the environmental

and health risks associated with burning plastics (smith et al. 2015)

7
“The open burning of plastic wastes is a practice that is highly

prevalent across the globe, toxic to human and environmental health, and a

critical-but often overlooked aspect of plastic pollution. Most of the countries

where such burning is widespread have laws and policies in place against it:

open burning plastics nevertheless. From community members that ashes

burned was key to perceptions of sites, people expressed concern about open

burning plastics, neither of these two aspects, the open burning of plastics

wastes, global plastics waste crisis, is novel to this case. The open burning of

plastic burned based on the ratio of households that burn waste in each of the

departments using census data.(G Pathak et al. 2023)”

The open burning plastic wastes-which we define 05 the burning of waste

plastics in open fires without managing for the emission of by product, such as

gases and ash, into the cabinet air soil-is widespread across the globe. It

occur even in the global north but is especially prevalent among law and

middle-income countries in the global south estimates of the scale of open

burning among LMICs, range from around 40z to 657 of total municipal solid

waste(Christian et al.2014)
