26 oz. Black #312 Red Heart Super Saver Art. E300 by Coats & Clark
or worsted yarn
14 oz. Crayon #2930 (variegated) Red Heart Kids Art. E711 by Coats
& Clark or worsted yarn

GAUGE
3 sc = 1 inch; 3 sc rows = 1 inch.

BASIC STITCHES
Ch, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr

BOTTOM
Row 1: With variegated, ch 50, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch
across changing to black (see Stitch Guide) in last st made, turn. (49 sc
made) Front of row 1 is right side of work.
Row 2: Working this row in front lps only (see Stitch Guide), ch 1, sc in
each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, (hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, 3 tr in
next st, tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st) across
changing to variegated in last st made, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), skip next st, (dc in next 3 sts, 3 dc in next
st, dc in next 3 sts, dc next 3 sts tog) across to last 9 sts, dc in next 3 sts, 3

AFGHAN
Row 1: With wrong side of Bottom facing you, working this row in front
lps only, join black with sc in 10th st from corner on one 43-sc edge (see
illustration), sc in each st around, ending in 10th st after corner on
opposite end of same edge, turn. (161 sts made)
Rows 2–12: Repeat rows 3–13 of Bottom.
Rows 13–83: Repeat rows 2–13 of Bottom consecutively, ending with row
12.
Row 84: Ch 1, sc in each st across; working in ends of rows, 2 sc in first
row, evenly spacing sts so piece lies flat, sc across rows, sl st in next
unworked st of row 32 on Bottom. Fasten off.
Row 85: Join variegated with sc in end of first row, evenly spacing sts so
piece lies flat, sc across rows with 2 sc in last row, sl st in first st on last
row. Fasten off.

I afghan hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge
GAUGE
3 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 2 inches.

BASIC STITCHES
Ch, sl st

SPECIAL STITCHES
To work lps off hook, yo, pull through one lp on hook (see il-lustration
a), (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) across leaving one lp on hook at end
of row (see illustration b).

For afghan stitch (afghan st), skip first vertical bar, *insert hook under
next vertical bar (see illustration c), yo, pull lp through; repeat from *
across to last vertical bar; for last st, insert hook under last vertical bar
and in st directly behind it (see illustration d), yo, pull lp through; work
lps off hook.

For twist st (see illustration), insert hook from left to right through next
vertical bar (see arrow on illustration), yo, pull through vertical bar.

For joining, insert hook in end of corresponding row, yo, pull through
row and lp on hook.
 For color change, work lps off to last 2 lps on hook, pull new color
through last 2 lps on hook.

BOTTOM SIDE (make 2)

Row 1: With blue, ch 52, leaving all lps on hook, pull up lp in second ch
from hook, pull up lp in each ch across (52 lps on hook); work lps off
hook (see Special Stitches).
Row 2: Afghan st (see Special Stitches) across, fasten off blue; with white,
work lps off hook.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, *afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st (see
Special Stitches) in next vertical bar; repeat from * across to last vertical
bar, afghan st in last vertical bar; work lps off hook.
Row 4: Afghan st across; work lps off hook changing to blue (see Special
Stitches).
Row 5: Afghan st across, fasten off blue; with white, work lps off hook
changing to blue.
Row 6: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next
vertical bar) across to last vertical bar, afghan st in last vertical bar; work
lps off hook.
Row 7: Afghan st across; work lps off hook.
Rows 8–36: Repeat rows 2–7 consecutively, ending with row 6.
Row 37: Ch 1, skip first vertical bar, sl st in each vertical bar across. Fasten

Gusset
Row 1: For side of Gusset, with blue, sl st in first ch on opposite side of
starting ch on one Bottom Side, ch 9, pull up lp in second ch from hook
and in each ch across (9 lps on hook); work joining (see Special Stitches),
(yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) across.
Row 2: Afghan st across, work joining, fasten off blue, with white, (yo, pull
through 2 lps on hook) across.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next
vertical bar) across, work joining, (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) across.
Row 4: Afghan st across, work joining, (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook)
across changing to blue.

Rows 90–124: Repeat rows 2–7 consecutively, ending with row 6. Do not
fasten off.

HANDLE
Row 1: Afghan st across, pull up lp in next joining (10 lps on hook); work
lps off hook.
Row 2: Afghan st across, fasten off blue, with white, work lps off hook.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next
vertical bar) across to last vertical bar, afghan st in last vertical bar; work
lps off hook.
Row 4: Afghan st across; work lps off hook changing to blue.

First Panel
Row 1: With wrong side and bottom of Gusset facing you, hold left-hand
side of Gusset and one side of remaining Bottom Side together, working
through both thicknesses, with blue, pull up 38 lps across ends of rows;
work lps off hook.
Row 2: Afghan st across, fasten off blue; with white, work lps off hook.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next
vertical bar) across to last vertical bar, afghan st in last vertical bar; work
lps off hook.
Row 4: Afghan st across; work lps off hook changing to blue.
Row 5: Afghan st across, fasten off blue; with white, work lps off hook
changing to blue.
Row 6: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next

through 2 lps on hook) across.
Row 3: Skip first vertical bar, (afghan st in next vertical bar, twist st in next
vertical bar) across, work joining, (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) across.
