My high school experience was drastically different than the portrayal in the movie “21
Jump Street.” The main characters, undercover with fake names, walk into their first day of
school and are not very well-liked. Their first interaction turns into a fight, and “Brad” punches a
guy in the face. Using context, we can infer he did it to show others that he was “cool” and fit in.
“Brad” believes that to succeed in the environment, he needs to act tough and prove himself
physically. In reality, to succeed in that environment he needs to apply himself to the same
standard as his peers. This also stood true at my high school. Individuals who were negative-
minded and didn’t apply themselves academically were not considered popular. As stated in our
textbook, students are impacted by the practice and application of learning in a variety of
contexts. In high school, the more involved and dedicated you were, the more popular you
became.
On the other hand, referring to our textbook, modeling also has a large impact on
learning. Students will usually follow what they are taught, whether it be verbally,
subconsciously, or through body language. An example of this would be how the principal
handled the situation when “Brad” got violent with another student. The principal had a very
unprofessional approach, which shows that he doesn’t take it seriously. He verbally
communicates that he is doing what he can to avoid doing his job and gives no punishment. This
behavior subconsciously communicates to students that they shouldn’t take anything seriously
either. In my high school, this situation would have been handled very differently. In any violent
occurrence, the offending student was more than likely expelled that same day, or at least
suspended. This is quite unrealistic for today's standards in education.
A major theme in this movie was the use and distribution of drugs. The main characters
were sent into a high school undercover to bust a drug operation happening in the school. This
shows how the majority of students in that particular school manage their time. This represents
another factor that has an impact on learning, time management. Students were not lone
contributors, though. The sports coach happened to be a dealer and assisted the students in illegal
activities. Another example of illegal faculty involvement would be when the female teacher was
flirting with a student. These examples are the opposite of what our textbook defines as ethical
practice. These dramatic situations would be unimaginable at a small high school like the one I
attended.
The high school portrayed in the movie “21 Jump Street” is not like the high school I
went to. Thankfully, drugs and violence are not a frequently occurring issue in high schools
around this community. All the situations described would either not have happened or have been
handled much differently. This is very important because it proves the schools in the community
to be functional educational environments.
