VOLLEYBALL
INTRODUCTION
- On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts USA, William G. Morgan
a physical education director at the Young Men’s Christian Association
(YMCA), created a new game called mintonette.
- It was meant to be a pastime to be played preferably indoors by any
number of players.
- Soon the game quickly became known as volleyball (it
was originally as two words; Volley ball)
- 1910- Elwood S. Brown introduced Volleyball in the Philippines.
EQUIPMENT
Net and Antenna
A volleyball net typically measures 2.75 meter tall and 10.6meter
long.
The height of the volleyball net varies among the participants of a
certain tournament.
Female 2.24 meter (7.4 ft)
Male 2.43 meter (8ft)
Basic Volleyball Skills
Dig pass
- Dig pass is also called a pass or pump.
- In this skill the player hits the ball with his/her forehand and
passes it to the next player who sets or tosses the ball.
- This is often done when the opposing team serves the ball and
the other team receives the ball in preparation for an attack.
Toss/Set- is most likely the second contact of a play the main
goal of tossing is to toss the ball up in the air in order for the
spiker to hit it properly and to make a successful attack to score a
point.
2 types of set
Underhand set- using forehands to set the ball upward.
Over head toss- using the fingers of both hands to toss the ball
upward in a single second.
Serve
Underhand service
- is a service in which the player strikes the ball below the waist instead of tossing it up and
striking it above the head. Underhand serves are considered very easy to receive.
Overhead service
-is a kind of serve wherein a player tosses the ball and strikes it over his/her head with an
open hand. This serve is sometimes called a float serve or a top spin. It is the basic serve
used in professional leagues.
Jump Serve
- Is an overhead serve where the ball is first tossed high up in the air, then the player
makes a timed approach and jumps to make contact with the ball, hitting it strong
with a topspin. This is the most popular serve among college and professional
teams.
Spike
-Also known as the attack, is usually the third contact a team makes with
the ball. The objective of attacking is to handle the ball so that it lands on
the opponent’s court and cannot be defended.
- A player makes a series of steps(approach), jumps and swings at the ball.
At the moment of contact, the hitter’s arm is fully extended above his/her
head and slightly forward, making the highest possible contact while
maintaining the ability to deliver a powerful hit.
- The hitter uses arm swing, wrist snap and a rapid forward contraction of
the entire body to drive the ball.
- It is considered as the most powerful offensive attack.
Block
- Is one of the important skills in volleyball, which is seldom taught to
students in regular physical education. It may be because it requires a
player to be able to jump as possible to be able to reach the top of
the net, and deflect an attack or spike. It also requires proper timing,
positioning and strong upper extremities. Side stepping and cross
stepping are also important to enable the blocker to move from one
side of the court to the other, without removing eye contact with the
ball.
- It is considered as the most powerful defensive attack.
POSITIONS IN VOLLEYBALL
• Setter- Orchestrates the offense of the team. He/she aims for second
touch with main responsibility of placing the ball in the air where the
attackers can bring the ball into the opponent’s court for a point.
• Libero- means “free” in Italian and the player is named as such
because he/she can substitute for any player on the court during each
play. The defensive specialist of the team responsible for receiving an
attack or serve. He/she usually has the quickest reaction time and
best passing skills. A libero wears a differently colored jersey from
his/her teammates.
• Middle Blocker or Middle Hitter- can execute very fast attacks that usually take
place near the setter. He/she specializes in blocking to stop equally fast plays from
the opponent and then quickly set up a double block at side of the court.
• Outside Hitter/ left-side hitter/Open spiker-
- attacks from near the left antenna. The outside hitter is the most consistent hitter
on the team and gets the most sets.
• Opposite hitter or right side hitter- performs the defensive task for a volleyball
team in the front row. His/her primary responsibilities are to put up well-formed
block against the opponent. He/She serves as a backup setter. Sets to the opposite
usually go to the right side of the antenna.
