Problem: A stream of water at a flow rate of 50 kmol/hr and 90 °C and a stream of butanol at a flow rate of
20 kmol/hr and 25 °C are fed to a heat exchanger operating at atmospheric pressure. The NRTL property
method is used for this simulation. A HeatX model is used. The hot stream should pass through the shell side
of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger duty and the LMTD correction factor are 40 KW and 0.8
respectively (with a minimum temperature approach of 1 °C). The flow direction is counter-current, with a
shell side pressure drop of 0.2 atm. The power law model is applied to the hot side flow rate, utilizing a
reference flow of 1 kmol/hr and an exponent of 1.5 and U-reference is 0.0203019012 cal/sec-sqcm-K.
Perform a shortcut design calculation and answer the following 5 questions with accuracy up to three digits
after the decimal points.
1) The required heat exchanger area is _____ m2.
2) The UA of the heat exchanger is _____ J/sec-K.
3) The enthalpy of the hot outlet stream is _____ kJ/mol.
Reduce the heat duty to 20 kW.
4) The hot fluid exit temperature is _____ °C.
5) The reduction of required heat exchanger area is _____ m2. 18

Extraction problem: A mixture of water and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is to be separated using n-octanol.
The feed mixture enters at 1 bar pressure and 25 °C with the composition of 78.1 wt % of water and the rest
MIK at 96 kg/hr. The pure solvent enters at the same condition as feed with 100 kg/hr. The counter-current
Extraction unit contains 10 theoretical stages. Calculate the amount of MEK extracted. Use the UNIFAC model.
Plot ternary diagram.
