NOUN: GENDER
Gender is of four kinds.
1. Masculine Gender: A noun that denotes a male animal is said to be of the MasculineGender. (ftl Noun ls uj

2. Feminine Gender: A noun that denotes a female animal is said to be of the FeminineGender. (ftl Noun ls

3. Common Gender: A noun that denotes either a male or a female is said to be of the CommonGender; ( tks

student, doctor, child, friend, pupil, servant, thief, relation, enemy, cousin, person, orphan, teacher, diplomat,
baby, monarch, neighbor, infant.
4.Neuter Gender : A noun that denotes a thing that is neither male nor female ( bldk Use oLrqvksa ds fy;s gksrk gSA
rFkk bls uj o eknk esa foHkkftr ugha fd;k tkrkA)(i.e., thing without life) is said to be of the NeuterGender; as, Book,
table, river, rice, gold, pen, room, tree.
[Neuter means neither, that is, neither male nor female]
WAYS OF FORMING THE FEMININE OF NOUNS
(1) By using an entirely different word; as

(2) By adding a prefix or suffix ; as

(3) By adding a syllable(-ess, -ine, -trix, -a, etc.) as,


(a)by adding –ess to the masculine without any change in the form of the masculine

Note- The suffix –ess is the commonest suffix used to form feminine nouns, from the
