3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:

3.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration Process.

WARNING

Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,

ensure that all test equipment voltage and/or current outputs are set to zero (0) or
turned off, where applicable. Ensure that all equipment switches are set to the
proper position before making connections or applying power. If not strictly
observed, could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health
hazards.

3.2 TI weighing mechanism must be free of dust, dirt or other foreign material that might affect calibration.

3.3 Ensure TI is level and is located on a firm, flat surface, in an area free of excessive drafts or air currents.

NOTE

Always place Standard Weights at the center of the TI weighing surface unless
directed otherwise.

3.4 Use that part of the procedure applicable to the TI range and type.

3.5 Appendix B contains manufacturer specifications and relative information. Certify the TI to the manufacturer
specifications whenever possible. If the TI is not listed in Appendix A, the TMDE Laboratory must make every
effort to obtain manufacturer specifications. The manufacturer specifications must be forwarded to AFMETCAL for
inclusion in this procedure. If the manufacturer specifications are not available through any means and all efforts to
obtain such have been exhausted, the following general specification will apply:

Analog TIs:

0.2% of applied load or 1 division of minor beam or dial, whichever is greater.

Digital Readout TIs:

0.2% of applied load or 1 digit, whichever is greater.

3.6 If the general specifications listed in step 3.5 are used, a Limited Certification Label will be required and
annotated with the applicable specifications.

2
T.O. 33K6-4-72-1

3.7 If the TI changes resolution throughout the TI FS range, treat each resolution range separately when performing
para 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3.

Example: A TI has a range of 0 to 600 lbs with 0.01 lb resolution, and a second range of 601 to
2200 lbs with a 1 lb resolution. The first range of 0 to 600 lbs will be calibrated at checkpoints
approximately 12.5, 25, 50, 75 and 95% of 600 lbs, the upper limit of the first range. Next, to
perform the calibration of the second range, subtract the second range lower limit (601) from the
upper limit (2200) to yield a second range of 1600 lbs. Add approximately 12.5, 25, 50, 75 and 95%
of 1600 lbs to 601 lbs, the lower limit of the second range. This will result in the following TI
calibration checkpoints:

0 to 600 lbs 601 to 2200 lbs

12.5% 75 lbs 800 lbs
25% 150 lbs 1,000 lbs
50% 300 lbs 1,400 lbs
75% 450 lbs 1,800 lbs
95% 550 lbs 2,100 lbs

3.8 If TI resolution is such that the tolerances cannot be read, certify the TI to the next greater digit of resolution. If
calibrated to the next greater digit of resolution, annotate the accuracy on a Limited Certification Label.

3.9 Exercise the TI three (3) times, to FS or calibrated range, whichever is applicable.

3.10 The minimum use specifications for the equipment listed in section 2 are broad in order to cover the requirements
for any item listed in this Calibration Procedure. Select substitute equipment based on the accuracy of the item being
calibrated (maintain a 4:1 TAR) not the minimum use specifications listed in section 2. Refer to T.O. 00-20-14 for
guidance concerning substitution of equipment.

3.11 This procedure has three (3) Direct Readout methods. Select the applicable method based on the available
Standard Weights. Para 4.1 is to be used when sufficient Standard Weights are available to perform a full
calibration without the use of Bulk Weight. Para 4.2 is to be used when sufficient Standard Weights are available to
perform a calibration ≥12.5% TI Calibrated Range and then Bulk Weights to perform the full calibration. Para 4.3
shall be used when available Standard Weights cannot be used to reach 12.5% TI Calibrated Range.

3.12 Calculate all checkpoints and TARs prior to beginning calibration. Refer to Appendix C for TAR example
calculations.

3.13 If para 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 is used and a TAR of 4:1 or better is maintained, then the TI can be fully calibrated with
no limitations. If para 4.1 is used and a TAR of 4:1 is not achievable, this is a Limited Calibration. If para 4.2 is
used and a TAR of 4:1 is not achievable, this is a T.O. Directed Limitation. If para 4.3 is used and a TAR of 4:1 is
not achievable, this is a Customer Approved Limitation.

3.14 For all TIs with a Linearity specification, annotate and attach a Limited Certification Label with Linearity not
calibrated. This Calibration Procedure does not perform a Linearity calibration.

3.15 If applicable, ensure TI with AC power adapter has been connected to an appropriate power source. Ensure
battery operated TIs have fully charged batteries. If applicable, turn TI POWER to ON. Refer to the TI manufacturer
data for warm-up time. If data is not available, a minimum of 10 minutes shall be adequate.

4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.

4.1 WEIGHT DIRECT READOUT CALIBRATION: (Using Standard Weights Only)

4.1.1 Ensure TI display is indicating in lbs. If not, set TI to indicate in lbs.

4.1.2 If applicable, slide the TI beam poises to zero and with no weight on the platform ensure the dial indicates
zero or the beam assembly is balanced.

4.1.3 Determine calibration points for approximately 12.5, 25, 50, 75 and 95% of the TI capacity. When calibrating
an analog scale, ensure that all selected calibration points include the use of each beam, dial and hanging weight (if
applicable). Ensure that all beams are set at the maximum when calibrating the TI at the 95% calibration point.

4.1.4 Place Standard Weight(s) on the TI weighing surface equal to the 12.5% calibration point determined in
step 4.1.3.

4.1.5 If applicable, slide the TI beam poise and/or place the TI counterpoise weights on the beam until the beam
assembly is balanced.

4.1.6 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.1.7 The TI dial, beam and/or the TI counterpoise weights must indicate the applied weight per accuracy listed in
Appendix B.

4.1.8 Repeat steps 4.1.4 through 4.1.7 for the remaining calibration points using Standard Weight(s) only.

4.1.9 As applicable, repeat steps 4.1.2 through 4.1.8 for the remaining TI ranges as per step 3.7 for the TI being
calibrated.

4.1.10 If calibration is complete, proceed to step 4.3.16.

4.2 WEIGHT DIRECT READOUT CALIBRATION: (Using Standard Weights ≥12.5% of TI Range)

4.2.1 Ensure TI display is indicating in lbs. If not, set TI to indicate in lbs.

4.2.2 If applicable, slide the TI beam poises to zero and with no weight on the platform ensure the dial indicates
zero or the beam assembly is balanced.

4.2.3 Determine calibration points for approximately 12.5, 25, 50, 75 and 95% of the TI capacity. When calibrating
an analog scale, ensure that all selected calibration points include the use of each beam, dial and hanging weight (if
applicable). Ensure that all beams are set at the maximum when calibrating the TI at the 95% calibration point.

NOTE

Additional calibration points may be necessary which correspond to the

Standard Weights and Bulk Weight available. Refer to Appendix A.

4.2.4 Place Standard Weight(s) on the TI weighing surface equal to the (approximate) 12.5% calibration point
determined in step 4.2.3.

4
T.O. 33K6-4-72-1

4.2.5 If applicable, slide the TI beam poise and/or place the TI counterpoise weights on the beam until the beam
assembly is balanced.

4.2.6 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.2.7 The TI dial, beam and/or the TI counterpoise weights must indicate the applied weight per accuracy listed in
Appendix B.

4.2.8 Repeat steps 4.2.4 through 4.2.7 for as many calibration points as possible using only Standard Weight(s).
When it is necessary to use any Bulk Weight to calibrate the TI at any of the calibration points, perform the
following steps:

NOTE

Always use the maximum amount of Standard Weight and the least amount of
Bulk Weight to attain the calibration point. For example:

Example for a 1,000 lb TI:

75% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available.
Use about 250 lbs of Bulk Weight and 500 lbs of Standard Weight.

Example of a 2,000 lb TI:

75% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available.
Use about 1,000 lbs of Bulk Weight and 500 lbs of Standard Weight.

NOTE

For steps 4.2.9 through 4.2.18, a pallet may be used to load and unload the
Standard Weights. The pallets weight will be included in the total amount of
Bulk Weight placed onto the scale each time.

Example for a 1,000 lb TI:

75% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available. Use 500 lbs
of Standard Weight and about 250 lbs of Bulk Weight (150 lbs of Bulk Weight
plus the pallet weight of 100 lbs).

Example for a 2,000 lb TI:

75% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available. Use 500 lbs
of Standard Weight and about 1,000 lbs of Bulk Weight (900 lbs of Bulk Weight
plus the pallet weight of 100 lbs).

4.2.9 Determine the approximate amount of Bulk Weight required to be used for the next calibration point and place
on TI weighing surface. Record the TI indication.

4.2.10 Place all available Standard Weight on the TI weighing surface. Record amount of Standard Weight used.

4.2.11 If applicable, slide the TI beam poise and/or place the TI counterpoise weights on the beam until the beam
assembly is balanced.

4.2.12 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.2.13 The TI dial, beam and/or the TI counterpoise weights must indicate the applied weight per accuracy listed in
Appendix B.

4.2.14 Remove Standard Weight(s) and Bulk Weight from the TI weighing surface.

5
T.O. 33K6-4-72-1

4.2.15 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.2.16 Ensure TI indicates zero (0) within the accuracy listed as per accuracy listed in Appendix B, if applicable.

4.2.17 Using a combination of Standard Weight(s) and Bulk Weight, repeat steps 4.2.9 through 4.2.16 until all
calibration points have been calibrated.

4.2.18 If applicable, repeat steps 4.2.2 through 4.2.17 for the remaining TI ranges as per step 3.7 for the TI being
calibrated.

4.2.19 If calibration is complete, proceed to step 4.3.16.

4.3 WEIGHT DIRECT READOUT CALIBRATION: (Using Standard Weights <12.5% of TI Range)

4.3.1 Ensure TI display is indicating in lbs. If not, set TI to indicate in lbs.

4.3.2 If applicable, slide the TI beam poises to zero and with no weight on the platform ensure the dial indicates
zero or the beam assembly is balanced.

4.3.3 Determine calibration points including the minimum point using available Standard Weights (in this case, less
than 12.5% TI calibrated range) and the maximum at approximately 95% of the TI capacity. When calibrating an
analog scale, ensure that all selected calibration points include the use of each beam, dial and hanging weight (if
applicable). Ensure that all beams are set at the maximum when calibrating the TI at the 95% calibration point.

NOTE

In this calibration, there will be more calibration points due to the small amount
of available Standard Weights. Refer to Appendix C.

4.3.4 Place Standard Weight(s) on the TI weighing surface equal to the first calibration point determined in
step 4.3.3.

4.3.5 If applicable, slide the TI beam poise and/or place the TI counterpoise weights on the beam until the beam
assembly is balanced.

4.3.6 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.3.7 The TI dial, beam and/or the TI counterpoise weights must indicate the applied weight per accuracy listed in
Appendix B.

4.3.8 Remove Standard Weight(s) from the TI weighing surface.

NOTE

Always use the maximum amount of Standard Weight and the least amount of
Bulk Weight to attain the calibration point. For example:

Example for a 1,000 lb TI:

second calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available.
Use about 500 lbs of Bulk Weight and 500 lbs of Standard Weight.

Example of a 10,000 lb TI:

95% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available.
Use about 9,000 lbs of Bulk Weight and 500 lbs of Standard Weight.

6
T.O. 33K6-4-72-1

NOTE

For steps 4.3.9 through 4.3.15, a pallet may be used to load and unload the
Standard Weights. The pallets weight will need to be included in the total
amount of Bulk Weight placed onto the scale each time.

Example for a 10,000 lb TI:

95% calibration point, with 500 lbs of Standard Weight available. Use 500 lbs
of Standard Weight and about 9,000 lbs of Bulk Weight (8,900 lbs of Bulk Weight
plus the pallet weight of 100 lbs).

4.3.9 Determine the approximate amount of Bulk Weight required to be used for the next calibration point and place
on TI weighing surface. Record the TI indication.

4.3.10 Place all available Standard Weight on the TI weighing surface. Record amount of Standard Weight used.

4.3.11 If applicable, slide the TI beam poise and/or place the TI counterpoise weights on the beam until the beam
assembly is balanced.

4.3.12 Allow the TI indication to stabilize.

4.3.13 The TI dial, beam and/or the TI counterpoise weights must indicate the applied weight per accuracy listed in
Appendix B.

4.3.14 Using a combination of Standard Weight(s) and Bulk Weight, repeat steps 4.3.9 through 4.3.13 until all
calibration points have been calibrated through approximately 95% TI range.

4.3.15 If applicable, repeat steps 4.3.2 through 4.3.14 for the remaining TI ranges as per step 3.7 and Table 1
directive for the TI being calibrated.

4.3.16 Calibration complete. If necessary, turn TI Off. Secure all equipment.

4.3.17 Annotate and attach appropriate Certification Label as per steps 3.6, 3.8, 3.13 and 3.14.

APPENDIX C

Calculating TARs

Para 4.1:

This method utilized Standard Weights to calibrate the TI to Table 1 specifications (or limits the TAR to
4:1 IAW step 3.6). To determine the TAR, divide TI Accuracy by the square root of the sum of each Standard
Weight tolerance squared (RSS):

Example: If a TI with a resolution of 1 lb and an accuracy of 1 lb is calibrated at 500 lbs

using ten (10) 50 lb Class F weights (tolerance 0.005 lb), the TAR would be:

1
63.2: 1
10 ∗ 0.005

Para 4.2 and 4.3:

This method requires the use of Bulk Weight as part of the calibration. Each time Bulk Weight must be
used in a measurement an extra error of (TI Resolution/(2*sqrt3)) must be included in the TAR calculation. The
reason this error is included is because the Bulk Weight is added to the TI prior to adding the Standard Weights.
The Bulk Weight can only be measured to within ½ the TI resolution (i.e. the TI toggles between two values, and the
worst case is there is a maximum error equal to ½ the TI resolution). The square root of 3 is a conservative way to
assume that the worst case is not always present in the measurement.

∑ ∗ /2 3

Example: If a TI with a resolution of 1 lb and an accuracy of 1 lb at 500 lbs and

accuracy of 2 lb at 1,000 lbs is calibrated using ten (10) 50 lb Class F weights
(tolerance 0.005 lb), and then 500 lbs Bulk Weight to reach a 1,000 lbs checkpoint,
the TAR would be:

2
6.91: 1
10 ∗ 0.005 1 /2 3

If the TI is calibrated at the next checkpoint the resolution error is now present twice (because this is the second
time bulk weight has been used in the calibration). The TAR is now:

∑ ∗ /2 3

Example: If the TI is calibrated at the next checkpoint, 1,500 lbs, and the TI has an
accuracy of 2 lbs, the resolution error is now present twice (because this is the second
time bulk weight has been used). The TAR is now:

2
4.89: 1
10 ∗ 0.005 2∗ 1 /2 3
