PYC G11 Electricity & Magnetism Electromagnetism Magnetic Fields Faraday S Law-Magnetic Flux Density Exercise E P74

The document provides exercises for Grade 11 Physical Sciences focused on magnetic fields and Faraday's law, including calculations of magnetic flux through various loops and scenarios. It includes specific problems such as calculating flux through a circular loop, determining the direction of current in a solenoid, and finding the range of magnetic flux linkage. The answers and methodologies for solving these problems are also outlined in the accompanying memorandum.

Exercise E

Grade: 11

Subject: Physical Sciences

Topic: Magnetic fields; Faraday’s law-magnetic flux density

Source: X-Kit Achieve! Physical Sciences Grade 11, Study Guide

Page: 74

Practise the basics

1. Calculate the flux through a circular loop with diameter 5 cm if the loop is held perpendicularly to a magnetic
field of 0,7 T.
2. A loop with area 1,5 m2 is rotated in a magnetic field of 0,85 T. Calculate the flux through the loop when the
loop is:
a. perpendicular b. 40° c. parallel to the field.

3. You look down the tunnel of a solenoid. A current flows in the solenoid, which creates a north pole closest to
your face. From your point of view, is the current flowing clockwise or anticlockwise?
4. A 10 cm by 8 cm rectangular loop is placed in a field of 1,3 T. Calculate the range of possible values for the
magnetic flux linkage in the loop.
5. The flux through a loop of area 0,8 m2 is 2,5 Wb. Determine the field strength of the magnetic field when the
loop is held so that the normal to the loop’s area is 60° to the field.

Practise the basics

1. Area = πr2 = π(0,025)2 = 1,96 × 10–3 m2
Φ = BAcosθ = (0,7)( 1,96 × 10–3)cos(0°) = 1,37 × 10–3 Wb
2. a. θ = 0°, Φ = BAcosθ = (0,85)(1,5)cos(0°) = 1,275 Wb
b. θ = 40°, Φ = BAcosθ = (0,85)(1,5)cos(40°) = 0,977 Wb
c. θ = 90°, Φ = BAcosθ = (0,85)(1,5)cos(90°) = 0 Wb
3. Anticlockwise using the right-hand solenoid rule (thumb points to face, fingers curl anticlockwise)
4. Area = (0,1 × 0,08) = 0,008 m2
Minimum value if θ = 90° is BAcosθ = (1,3)(0,008)cos 90° = 0 Wb
Maximum value if θ = 0° is BAcosθ = (1,3)(0,008)cos(0°) = 1,04 × 10–2 Wb
Range: [0 Wb to 1,04 × 10–2 Wb]
5. Φ = BAcosθ, (2,5) = B(0,8)cos(60°), B = 6,25 T
