Properties of Continuous Functions and Tangents

The document outlines the properties of continuous functions, stating that operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (with a non-zero denominator) result in continuous functions. It discusses the concept of tangent lines, including how to determine their slope using derivatives, which represent the slope of the tangent line at any point on a graph. Additionally, it provides examples of finding slopes and derivatives for specific functions at given points.

PROPERTIES OF CONTINUOUS FUNCTIONS:

1. The sum of functions is also continuous.

2. The difference of functions is also continuous.
3. The product of functions is also continuous.
4. The function and a constant is also continuous.
5. The quotient of the functions is also continuous,
provided the denominator is not equal to zero.
𝑔 𝑥 = 2 − 3(𝑥 + 2)3
𝑥2+ 𝑦2 = 4
Construct the tangent lines at the given points
on the graph.
Equation of a Tangent Line
•What determines a line?
•What is a slope? How will you solve the
slope of a line?
•How are you going to solve the equation of
the line given a slope and a point? Given
two points lie on the same line?

(c, f(c))

(c, f(c)) is the point of tangency and

is a second point on the graph of f.
Definition of Tangent Line with Slope m
The limit used to define the slope of a tangent line is also used to define
one of the two fundamental operations of calculus --- differentiation

Definition of the Derivative of a Function

f’(x) is read “f prime of x”
