Autonomous Institute Affiliated to VTU
JAN / FEB - 2021 Semester End Main Examinations
Programme: B.E. Semester : V
Branch : CIVIL ENGINEERING Duration: 3 hrs.
Course Code: 20CV5PCDRC Max Marks: 100
Course: Design of RCC Structural Elements & CAD Lab Date: 28.01.2021

Instructions: 1. Answer any FIVE full questions

2. Internal choice is only between question number 1and 2 and between 4 and5
3. Use of IS4156-2000 is permitted along with the relevant chart from SP 16
for design of columns
4. Assume any Missing data suitably and mention the same clearly

UNIT - I
1. a) Explain the design philosophy of limit state method and state its 05
Important Note: Completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the

significance.
remaining blank pages. Revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator will be treated as

b) Illustrate the criteria under which doubly reinforced beams are preferred 05

c) A RC beam section 230mm x 500mm is reinforced with 4 bars of 16mm 10

diameter at an effective cover of 40mm. Consider M20 Grade concrete and
Fe 415 grade steel as materials. Find the ultimate moment of resistance of
the beam. Also calculate Mu limit for the given section.

OR
2. a) Obtain the expression for the limiting depth of neutral axis, mulimit and 10
limiting percentage of steel for M25 grade and Fe 415 steel.

b) A rectangular beam section 250mm wide and 500mm depth up to center of 10

tension zone, consists of steel reinforcement 4 bars of 22mm diameter. Find
the position of the neutral axis, lever arm, the force of compression and
tension and the safe moment of resistance, if the concrete is of M20 grade
and steel is of Fe 415 grade. Adopt limit state method of design. Find what
concentrated load it can carry at the mid span, if the beam has an effective
span of 6m.

UNIT – II
Design a singly reinforced concrete beam to suit the following data: 20
malpractice.

3.
Clear span = 4m
Width of supports = 300mm
Service load = 5kN/m
Materials: M20 grade concrete, Fe-415 HYSD bars
Also design the shear resistance.

UNIT-III

4. Design a RC slab of size 5m x 7.5m [clear] with all four sides discontinuous 20
and corners held down. The slab is supported on all four sides over 300mm
thick walls. The live load on the slab is 3KN/m2. Floor finish is 0.6KN/m2.
Use M25 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. Sketch the details of
reinforcement.

OR

5. A simply supported beam of rectangular cross section 250mm wide and 20

450mm overall depth is used over an effective span of 4m. The beam is
reinforced with 3 bars of 20mm diameter with Fe 415 HYSD bars at
effective depth of 400mm. The self-weight of the beam together with the
dead load on the beam is 4KN/m run. The imposed load acting on the beam
is 10KN/m run. Using M20 grade concrete, compute the short term
deflection.

UNIT - IV
6. a) Rectangular reinforced concrete column of cross-sectional dimensions 10
300X 600mm is to be designed to support an ultimate axial load of 2000KN.
The beam have an effective length of 4m. Design suitable reinforcements
in the column using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415HYSD bars. Check for
minimum eccentricity in the directions

b) Determine the reinforcement required for a rectangular column 300mm x 10

500mm subjected to a uniaxial bending moment about the major axis.
Factored bending moment is 200KN-m and factored axial load is 500KN.
Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Sketch the details of the reinforcement.

UNIT - V
7. a) Design an isolated rectangular footing of uniform thickness for column of 20
size 300mm x 450mm. The column is carrying a service load of 1800KN.
The bearing capacity of soil is 190KN/m2. Use M20 grade concrete and
Fe415 steel grade. Sketch the reinforcement details.
