Understanding the real power of good quality gemstones,
their appropriate size and the metal to wear them in as well as
the right finger for the achievement of the purpose of
wearing. Learn the Navagraha mantra for a happy life.
2. Varāhamihira 80.1 1. Auspicious gems endowed with
good qualities ensures good luck for kings 2. Flawed gems
with bad marks and qualities brings disaster 3. Therefore
gems must be examined and tried properly before constant
use • Jyotiṣa gems must be of the highest quality, spotless,
appropriate size enabling constant use and energized by
worship of the graha devatā
3. Varāhamihira 80.3 • Original source of gems are said to be
1. Created from the bones of Bala daitya – – – – The word bala
also means strength Jyotiṣa gems strengthen the graha
Therefore must only be used for functional benefic planets
[Anukula School] Reference to bones = Sun, indicate that they
are energized by sun rays 2. Created from bones of Maharṣi
Marīci (Dadhīci) associated with the Sun – – Dadhīci bones
(Sun kāraka) used for Vajra (weapon) for Indra Jyotiṣa gems
are like astra (weapons) and must be used carefully Therefore
must be used only for functional malefics which have to be
controlled [Pratikula School] 3. Created from characteristic
quality of Earth
4. There are 22 jyotiṣa gems whose Sanskrit names are
known 12 jyotiṣa gems for the rāśi 9 jyotiṣa gems for the
graha 1 jyotiṣa gem for the lagna 22 Jyotiṣa Gems

which in all probability are for the 12 rāśi + 9 graha + 1 lagna
(12+9+1 = 22) • Expunging the Navaratna (nine graha gems)
from the list of 22, we obtain the 13 jyotiṣa gems for the 12

8. Inner and Outer Life • In Jyotiṣa life is divided into two
segments – inner and outer life • Inner life includes 1. Karma
(Work) – Karma - 10th bhāva : Mercury 2. Dārā (Spouse) – Wife
and Children – 7th bhāva phala : Venus 3. Sukha (Home,
Security) - 4th Bhāva : Moon 4. Lagna (Self, Body) – 1st Bhāva :
Sun Varāhamihira spends four chapters in describing these
four gemstones for Sun (Ruby), Moon (Pearl), Mercury
(Emerald) and Venus (Diamond) Kāraka 1st : Sun 4th: Moon
7th: Venus 10th: Mercury
9. Diamonds BS 80.6-11 • Diamonds have various colors,
shape – 1. White, Transparent : hexagon - Indra 2. Yellow, Blue
: any shape, square – Viṣṇu 3. White : Female organ shape –
Varuṇa 4. Red : Triangular - Agni 5. Pink : Barley corn – Vāyu 6.
Black, snake mouth - Yama • These devatā and colour are
based on six seasons. All gemstone colour, shape
classification is based on six-fold season
10. Diamonds BS 80.12-18 • Diamonds for profession, career
are based on the four varṇa and based on what one really
does as a profession 1. Brāhmaṇa: Teaching, Knowledge :
White 2. Kṣatriya: Security, Army : Red, Pink 3. Vaiśya:
Business, Trade : Yellow 4. Śūdra: All services : Black, dark •
Ensure that you choose a flawless diamond without cuts,
scratches, hair marks, perforation etc Women desiring sons
should not wear a diamond although Varāhamihira
recommends triangular diamond Bad diamonds ruins
relatives, wealth and life while good ones destroys enmity,
protects from poison
11. Pearl Color BS 81.7 • • • • • • • • Pearls have various colors,
shape – Bluish – Viṣṇu Varāhamihira talks of White – Indra
pearls for Moon as well as nodes Rāhu Yellowish – Varuṇa and
Ketu for which he Dark – Yama recommends Ivory of Elephant
and Boar Reddish – Vāyu Gray or Pinkish – Agni Once again
Varāhamihira has classified the choice of colour of pearl
based on devatā of six seasons.
12. Pearl String BS 81.17 • One of the simplest ways to
overcome the evil e!ects of planets is to make donation of
pearls at a Kṛṣṇa temple or to a brāhmaṇa Planet Sun Moon
Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus Ketu Rāhu, Saturn String 13 16 20

shapes are used [Yantra etc] • They should not be perforated
for strings and must be used as single pieces • They give
extreme brilliance in addition to children, victory and sound
health • Chosen if Ketu is very strongly benefic • • • • •
14. Boar, Whale Ivory BS 81.23 • Pearl beads (Ivory) obtained
from a boars tusk or from a whale are said to be very powerful
• Boars tusk ivory is chosen if Rāhu is strong while Whale bone
is for Saturn, Ketu • Same rules for wearing – 1. Puṣyā or
Śravaṇa nakṣatra 2. Eclipse of Sun or Moon 3. Uttara Ayana

16. Examining the use of gemstones for functional malefic
planets 1. ‘Parākrama’ (3rd house), or 2. Duṣthāna (6th, 8th
and 12th houses) Pratikula System
17. Dadhīci Bones • Battle between Sun & Rāhu is related to
eclipse • When Sun is Indra, Rāhu is Vṛtra a brāhmaṇa who
forsakes dharma and fights the devas. • Vṛtra was created by
Tvaṣṭṛ Āditya (Aquarius) to avenge the killing of his son by
Indra (Leo) • Vṛtra was a Viṣṇu bhakta who fell to wrong ways
and had to incarnate and was finally emancipated by Viṣṇu by
this brāhmaṇa birth • Vṛtra captures the nāḍi (rivers, kuṇḍalini
pathways) and holds them captive in a fortress [Aquarius is
the pot that holds the waters] • Indra gets the vajra weapon
from the bones of Maharṣi Dadhīci [power of gāyatrī] as
advised by Viṣṇu. Vajra also means “diamond”
18. Dadhīci Bones • Viṣṇu takes 3 steps to create battle field [
om bhūrbhuva svaḥ] • Battle between Indra and Vṛtra lasts
360 [deva?] days and the asura is slain. Indra regains control
of heavens • Mantra bhurbhuva is from the name of Maharṣi
Bhṛgu ( bh) • Astra (weapons) are seen from 3rd house
19. Vajra - Diamond • Vajra is in Tula rāśi = 3H from Leo (Indra
āditya) • shows the weapon of Indra as 3H shows fighting
skills, weapons wielded • Vajra is normally with two or four
bloated ends • We have used this a number of times with
considerable success
20. Note to PGA President 1. The continuing debate on
anukula (favourable, risk free) and pratikula (unfavourable,
appeasement) gemstones. In principle, we strongly support
the use of anukula gemstones and would recommend a
pratikula gemstone only if it was involved in a strong
favourable yoga in a kendra (quadrant). 2. The nava-ratna or
nine principal gemstones of the navagraha, their definitions
of quality including colour, clarity etc. All the nine gemstones
are ideally used with the ruby in the centre surrounded with
the other eight gems in an eight-petal heart lotus formation,
as a pendant. We have been admiring your beautiful
creations. 3. Discussion on gemstone conflicts are interesting
and in principle we have found them to alter the strength of
the principal gemstone in a negative manner, provided they
do not form a part of any yoga.
21. Propitiate Maharṣi for 3rd bhāva • Gemstone of the 3rd
bhāva is only used for war and battles just as the vajra yuddha
(diamond) was cra"ed for Indra • The Maharṣi associated with
the graha which gets debilitated in the 3rd bhāva should be
propitiated before wearing the gemstone. Dadhīci (Marīci)
associated with the Sun which is debilitated in Libra = 3H from
Leo • 3H is also the Guru-Upadeśa bhāva and therefore
without this propitiation of Maharṣi, gemstone of planets in
3rd bhāva should not be used. If none, then Nārada and
Dattātreya.
22. P.V.Narasimha Rao Use of gemstone of 3rd lord – became
Prime Minister of India out of the political vacuum created by
assassination of Rajiv Gandhi – Viparīta Rājayoga Bhadra
Mahāpuruṣa Yoga in the 10th house is supported by the two
Agni tattva planets Sun and Mars in digbala in 10th house.
Planets in digbala bring blessings on a chart; Mars is Lord of
3rd house in addition to 8th bhāva. Native wore a red-coral
(pravāla) on right hand ring finger and became Prime Minister
of India during Mars daśā
23. Examining the use of Gemstones for – 1. Lagna bhāva 1st
2. Kendra bhāva 4th, 7th, & 10th 3. Koṇa bhāva 5th & 9th
Anukula System: Recommended
24. Amitabh Bachchan Lagneśa is favorite It is the safest bet
for any astrologer as it makes the person strive to succeed in
this life's mission. Strengthening the Lagneśa leads to better
achievements for an individual. Saturn daśā (1971-90) made
him the king of Indian cinema, starting with Zanjeer (chains,
bondage) in 1973 When his business was down, he wore one
huge dark blue sapphire for Saturn and doubled it when it
gave huge benefits and brought him success in ‘kaun bangega
crorepati’ Saturn is also the lagneśa of dasāṁśa (D10) and
yogakāraka for navāṁśa (D9)
25. A!er choosing the planetary gemstone, 1. Choose metal
for ring 2. Finger or pendant 3. Mantra for energizing Wearing
Gemstone
26. Time to Wear • Choose starting muhurta carefully 1. Day
should be ruled by the graha (for navagraha gem) or tattva
lord 2. No planets in 8th bhāva 3. Only benefic in 12th bhāva 4.
Kendra beneficial 5. Malefics in 3, 6 or 11th bhāva 6. Jupiter or
Venus in Kendra 7. Worship the graha, adhi and pratyādi
devatā before wearing gemstone
