The School’s Facilities and their Conduciveness and Influences on the Students’ Academic
Experience
Introduction
Continuous note-taking, memorization, quizzes, seat work, and homework constitute the
conventional approach to learning. While students have become accustomed to this method, they
encounter challenges when presented with situational variations based on their learning. Their
minds are conditioned to rapidly absorb and replace information within this standardized
framework, resulting in an inconsistent learning process.
Previous studies have shown that students, along with teachers and faculty, demonstrate
better performance in schools equipped with well-maintained facilities compared to those with
substandard ones. The impact of school amenities on students can fluctuate, depending upon the
condition of the facilities, potentially yielding either positive or negative effects.
To gain a new perspective, this study proposes new and enhanced resources in order of
convenience for those attending the school. Ideally, one would add more buildings for the
suggested amenities. However, it is optimal to reuse and renovate unoccupied existing facilities,
particularly; the library, home-economics building, and science laboratory, for a more budget-
friendly solution, compromising to meet the standards of the occupiers and the developers.
Purpose
The goal of this study is to propose an idea to enhance the school’s facilities in terms of
convenience priority of the students, staff, and teaching personnel. The researchers’ advocacy is
to make the school to be well-known in the community. In this way, they can attract more
students to choose the Grace of Shekinah School.
Objectives
This study aims to:
1. Make the school more convenient for the students’ academic experience;
2. Make necessary modifications to enhance accessibility for individuals and ensure equal
opportunities for all students; and
3. Track progress and evaluate the effectiveness in the facility by implemented solutions.
Research Problem
The academic performance of Grace of Shekinah School students is hindered by a lack of
facilities to enhance their skills. For instance, those interested in culinary arts lack a dedicated
facility to develop their abilities before college. Provision of these facilities would motivate
students to enhance their skills while enjoying the learning process.
Research Questions
This research will answer the following questions:
1. How does the lack of facilities affect the students?
2. How can the teachers and students further enhance their academic experiences?
3. How can the school's curriculum support student’s attainment?
Research Rationale
A prevalent concern among students is the opportunity to enhance their study methods.
However, educational institutions have the chance to prioritize individual student needs,
positively influencing their academic performance. This research endeavors to foster awareness
within the school community and present creative solutions to address previously overlooked
areas, laying the groundwork for ongoing improvements and exploration.
Significance of the Research
The significance of this study lies in addressing how poor facilities negatively affect
learning as a whole and highlights how better educational infrastructure can improve student
performance and well-being.
The main beneficiaries of the study are the various sectors as follows:
The students
This research is essential, particularly for children with exceptional needs, providing
extra resources that students require in order to advance their education.
The teachers
If teachers have more students to educate with limited facilities, this study will be
beneficial to them, thus enhancing their working environment.
METHODOLOGY
The data collection for this research was conducted using an unstructured questionnaire.
This research utilized a questionnaire to efficiently gather data, serving as a guide to ensure
consistency and aiding in collecting information from various sources in an unstructured format.
This method of data collection provides more control over the directly collected data for the
research. The sampling method used in this research is purposive. Purposive sampling involves
selecting or investigating samples from respondents based on what is most relevant and
beneficial to the study.
Respondents
The junior and senior high school students from Grace of Shekinah School make up the
respondents of this research. There are a total of 18 respondents, consisting of 9 males and 9
females ranging from 14 to 18. Since they are the ones who predominantly utilize the facilities
and are mainly affected in their academic performances, they were selected for this study’s
participants.
Grade Level Number of Respondents
Grade 9 4
Grade 10 4
Grade 11 5
Grade 12 5
Total: 18
Figure 1. Population of Respondents
These grade levels are specifically chosen by the respondents because they are the ones
who mostly had access to the facilities provided by the school, and they also have a deeper
observation of how these facilities affected their academic performance.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The “Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory” has a connection between this theory and this
research. Kolb puts it as “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the
transformation of experience” (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). This theory is about how an individual’s
environment, emotion, and insights or thoughts affect their learning.
The researchers have opted to use the conceptual framework to correlate Grace of
Shekinah School’s facilities and how it impacts the students’ academic performances. Navarro
(2022) once stated, “improving school infrastructure results in better learning outcomes. This has
been proven many times in empirical literature.” Schools aim to achieve the most updated of
facilities to keep their students stimulated and well educated, which meant that the school needed
to be well-funded. But in order to accomplish this, schools would require good reputation,
legitimacy, and abundant sponsors and partnerships (Miotto et al., 2020).
The Grace of Shekinah School is trying to establish good quality facilities by building
more amenities or improving what they already have. But according to the survey questionnaires
that the researchers conducted, the problem that the school faces is that they do not have enough
financial resources for the facilities that are necessary for the learning of the students that further
affects their academic performance. As stated by Navarro (2022), “Both the public and private
sectors must assume responsibility in improving the students' learning environment through
better and adequate school infrastructure.” The pandemic has been concluded for over 2 years
and the school has had much time to prepare and host fund-raisers for the enhancement of said
facilities. Based on the gathered data from the respondents however, the school has been
prioritizing on regaining the reputation it had lost during the COVID-19 pandemic just as many
schools have.
The scholastic achievements of the students are of utmost importance in every school,
and well-maintained facilities may contribute to said academic performance. The researchers
have decided to use a conceptual framework to ascertain the relationship between the facilities’
conditions and how it may affect the students’ learning environment. However, enhancing
facilities is no cheap task. The school would need to secure good connections and collaborations
to remain well-financed in order to accommodate the requirements of a good pharmacy for the
school occupants.
In order for the school to provide the facilities that the students need, they are required to
have funds for the amenities that they may renovate, enhance, or build. Since the pandemic hit
however, the financial state of the school is not as stable as it once was. This change made the
school struggle for they cannot progress normally or build more essential amenities for the
learning environment. According to Yangambi (2023), "School facilities are a major factor in
ensuring quality education. This is one of the criteria for measuring education’s growth and
development level." Without the needed resources, this can also become a factor of why students
may become less stimulated or motivated which can cause the students' academic performance to
waver.
The significance of this theoretical framework is to serve as a guide for the researchers in
order to provide and support through theories, observation and other studies that claims the
research. It will also help this study acknowledge the value of the school’s facilities and how this
can contribute for the students of Grace of Shekinah School to feel more comfortable through
enhanced and maintained facilities, resources for education, and the performance of students.
THEMATIC ANALYSIS
This study’s target audience are all the junior and senior high school students of Grace of
Shekinah School from ages 14 to 18. The experiential theory used in this study came from the
researchers’ observation of the students’ concern about the unvarying quality of the school’s
amenities for the last 2 years since the COVID-19 pandemic had concluded.
Introduction of Thematic Analysis
To form a deeper understanding within qualitative research such as this study, it is
imperative to construct a thematic analysis. Organizing and analyzing the respondents’ answers
with regard to solidifying the research (Braun et al., 2022). This research aims to find the true
origin of this study’s problem and to seek supplemental solutions, to ascertain how the quality of
the facilities may or may not have impacted the pupils’ educational attainments by heeding their
concerns and opinions.

the interview questionnaires that the researchers have conducted.
DATA INTERPRETATION
This data interprets on how the researcher gathers the information through this, it was a
summary of methodology and demographic. In methodology to collect all the data using the
unstructured questionnaire to efficiently gather data, this serves as a guide to ensure consistency
and aiding in collecting information from various sources through unstructured format. For the
sampling method, use the purposive sampling which involves selecting or investigating samples
from respondents based on what is most relevant and beneficial to the study. Next is the
summary of our demographic for the respondents’ feedback; some of them express satisfaction
about the current facilities. However, some argue that limited resources significantly impact
students' learning experiences, indicating a divide in perceptions regarding the school’s ability to
support its students academically.
Data Analysis
The prevalent theme that the respondents acknowledged is that it is true wherein the
facilities play a major factor that affects the improvement of the students' academic performance.
According to Sianipar E., et al (2023) "learning facilities and equipment were able to increase
students’ motivation in learning, because the more adequate the learning facilities, the deeper the
students’ knowledge so that students’ motivation towards learning would grow as well as
students' performance and ability to understand would increase". However, there is a need for
improvement and enhancement. Due to this theme, the theoretical framework is affected in order
to provide the necessary facilities for students. There are some challenges, like the financial
situation that the school faced for example, particularly due to the impact of the COVID-19
pandemic.
The resumption of physical attendance after more than two years of lockdown has
impacted many people's lives. Ever since the traditional classroom sessions were declared, there
have been many challenges encountered in the educational system. According to Bautista, A., et
al (2021), "Majority of the students had received sufficient facilities and technical support from
their schools. In terms of financial, there is still a need for support. Some teachers are seeking for
adequate materials and resources." Despite the pandemic, the challenges, difficulties, and still
some facilities had remained in adapting the need for improvement and resources for the students
and teachers.
As for the expenses, the school still struggles with the aftermath of the pandemic, so it
cannot provide the facilities needed right away. According to Marquez, P. et al. (2020), "The
impact of the pandemic varies from one country to the next, but poor and developing countries
are the ones that are most at risk. This risk is compounded when it concerns sectors that are more
vulnerable than others. Such is the case of the Philippine education sector." Additionally,
according to France 24 (2021), "The Philippine economy will take more than a decade to return
to pre-pandemic growth, an official said Thursday, warning the next two generations of Filipinos
would be paying for the cost of COVID-19." But the country's economic state can slowly
improve over time, likewise, the education sector will also grow, which will lead to further
improvements in the facilities needed by the students.
Data Interpretation
The respondents' output has answered the research questions on this paper. The students
managed to have additional knowledge despite not having access to some facilities, while the
teachers may help by adapting other alternative learning strategies with the influence of modern
technology to help improve their students' performance. According to Dakhi O., (2020) "The
rapid advancement of information and communication technology in the 21st century is forcing
teachers who teach students at every level of education to change their behavior and mindset,
even committees that support them to achieve their teaching goals."
The possible issue that the school may face when planning and building these facilities
are the costs. When it comes to the students' help with the expenses by paying tuition, these are
enough for other important expenses that the school needs to pay (e.g. electric and water bills).
However, it is not enough to cover the expenses that the school will need in order to build or
improve the facilities. According to Santosa S., Mihrajuddin A., Munastiwi E., (2022) "Financial
management also plays a determinant role for the success of education. Thus, financial
management needs to be implemented by educational institutions, so that the use of school funds
can be more effective and efficient and the budget misuse is able to be minimized appropriately."
Based on the survey, students had different opinions about the resources provided by the
school. Some found it challenging based on the amounts of supplies needed, while others
believed that more resources could help them do better and enjoy more while in school.
This study could provide significant information about improving the facilities and
academic performance of the students. As well as finding out what more can be done and to offer
a suggestion or solution that will help students organize a proper or comfortable study place.
Additionally, this research has the potential to highlight the development of a learning
environment, wherein the students' academic performance and overall well-being can benefit
from. This may also help the school boards to have an idea on what to prioritize and improve
based on the insights of the students.
