Additional notes on legal, ethical issues and currents trends in PE

CURRENTS TRENDS AND ISSUES

Staying informed about current trends, research, and issues in the field of
physical education. One of major current issues in sports and PE is use of
technology in instruction and assessment. These technologies include but not
limited to the following:-

i) WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
The use of fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other wearable devices
eg. PEDOMETER, ACCELEROMETER is becoming more common
in physical education to monitor and assess students' physical activity
levels, monitor students' heart rate and calories burned, acceleration
of motion.
Benefits- Teachers can track individual and group fitness progress,
and students can set personal fitness goals.
 Research explores how the use of technology, including
wearable devices and fitness apps, influences students' physical
activity behaviors inside and outside the classroom.

ii) MOBILE APPS AND GAMIFICATION

Mobile applications and gamified platforms are employed to enhance
engagement in physical education. Apps can offer interactive
workouts, fitness challenges, and progress tracking. Apps for tracking
physical activity, creating workout plans, and promoting health and
wellness.
Benefit- Students can access resources for personal fitness outside of the
classroom, fostering lifelong healthy habits.

1
 Research investigates the impact of exergaming (video games
that require physical activity) on cardiovascular fitness, skill
acquisition, and motivation in physical education.

iii) ONLINE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

REMOTE LEARNING- The integration of online platforms for physical
education classes has become more prevalent, especially during times when
remote learning is necessary. Access to online platforms offering workout
routines, exercise demonstrations, and fitness challenges. Students can engage
in fitness activities outside of class, promoting a holistic approach to wellness.
Benefits- Digital platforms for sharing resources, assignments, and assessments.
Facilitates communication, collaboration, and the submission of assignments in
a digital format.

iv) DATA ANALYTICS FOR FITNESS ASSESSMENT

ANALYTICS TOOLS- The use of data analytics tools helps educators
assess individual and group fitness levels, enabling personalized feedback
and tailored physical activity programs.
 Video analysis allows instructors and students to review and
analyze movement patterns, techniques, and skills.
Benefits- It provides visual feedback, aids in skill improvement,
and enhances understanding of proper form.

v) USE OF WHITE BOARDS AND SMART BOARDS

Use of interactive displays for presenting lessons, illustrating diagrams, and
engaging students. Enhances visual learning, allows for interactive
discussions, and facilitates collaborative activities.

EMERGING ISSUES
2
i) EQUITY IN ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY
Ensuring equitable access to technology tools and resources is an
ongoing challenge, with concerns about the potential exacerbation of
existing inequalities.
ii) PRIVACY AND DATA SECURITY
As technology collects and analyzes more data, issues related to privacy
and data security become critical considerations that educators and
institutions must address.
iii) BALANCING SCREEN TIME
Striking a balance between technology use and physical activity is an
emerging concern, with educators aiming to integrate technology in ways
that complement, rather than replace, active experiences.
iv) TEACHER TRAINING AND SUPPORT
Providing ongoing training and support for educators to effectively
integrate technology into physical education remains a challenge.
v) ADAPTATION TO CHANGING TECHNOLOGIES
Keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies requires adaptability
and a commitment to staying informed about new tools and applications.

a. Integration of AI- AI may play a role in creating adaptive and

personalized learning experiences in physical education, tailoring
activities to individual student needs.
b. Enhanced interactivity- Future trends may include the integration
of sensors and other technologies that enhance interactivity and
provide real-time feedback during physical activities.
c. Collaboration platforms- Platforms that facilitate virtual
collaboration and teamwork in physical education settings may
become more prevalent.

3
d. Holistic wellness technology- Future developments may include
technology applications that address mental health and well-being
in addition to physical fitness.
vi) ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION- Understanding how to
modify and adapt physical education for individuals with diverse
abilities and needs. Adapted Physical Education (APE) and
Inclusive Physical Education (PE) are specialized approaches
within the field of physical education designed to address the
diverse needs of students, including those with disabilities.
APE is a specialized program designed to provide physical education
instruction and services for students with disabilities who require
individualized support and modifications. APE aims to individualize
physical education to meet the unique needs, abilities, and challenges
of students with disabilities.
vii) INCLUSIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION- Inclusive PE focuses
on creating an environment where students of all abilities
participate together in regular physical education classes. The
primary goal of inclusive PE is to provide opportunities for all
students, regardless of ability, to fully participate in physical
education activities. Adaptations may include modifying rules,
equipment, or the environment to ensure inclusion.
It's essential for physical education professionals to stay informed about
these trends, research findings, and emerging issues to effectively
leverage technology for the benefit of student learning and well-being.
