About yule
Yule is an ancient celebration of the Winter Solstice marking the longest
night of the year. From this day forth, the daylight hours grow longer.
In the tradition of Wicca and Paganism, Yule festivities stem from the Celtic
legend of the battle between the young Oak King and the Holly King. The
Oak King, who represents the light of the new year, tries each year to usurp
the old Holly King, who is the symbol of darkness.
Yule was celebrated by the lighting of bonfires in the fields while crops and
trees were toasted with spiced cider.
Children would go from house to house with gifts of clove spiked apples,
symbolic of the sun. The apples would be laid in baskets of evergreen
boughs representing immortality and wheat stocks sprinkled with flour to
represent triumph, light and life.
Holly and ivy decorated homes inside and out in the hope that nature
sprites would visit and join the celebration. Mistletoe was also hung as a
decoration, symbolic of the seed of the divine and at Midwinter, the Druids
would travel deep into the forest to find it.
The ceremonial Yule log was the highlight of the Solstice festival.
Traditionally the log (usually Ash) would be dragged into the house and
placed in the fireplace, where it could be decorated with holly and ivy,
doused with cider or ale and dusted with flour. It would then be lit by a
piece of the previous year’s log which was saved for that purpose.
The log would be left to burn through the night, then allowed to smoulder
for 12 days before being put out.

Many customs created around Yule are identified with modern Christmas
celebrations.
Decorate your home with sacred plants connected with Winter Solstice:
evergreen wreaths & boughs, mistletoe, holly, and ivy.
Set up a Yule tree and decorate it with lights, colorful balls (representing the
sun) and other images. Reflect on blessings of joy, renewal, and well-wish-
es as you decorate the tree.
Make a modern Yule log that is used as a base to hold three candles. Find a
smaller branch of oak or pine, and flatten one side so it sets upright. Drill
three holes in the top side to hold red, green, and white candles. Continue
to decorate with greenery, red and gold bows, rosebuds, cloves, and dust
with flour.
This is an ideal time to get crafty. Create protection pentacles and witch ball
ornaments to gift as homemade presents. Anything made by you is in
keeping with the Yule tradition.
Meditate on the rising and/or setting of the Solstice Sun and toast the return
of the Sun God. Note the position of the sun on the horizon at this time of
year and observe its change in position on the horizon as the days start
lengthening again.
Join with others in celebrating Pagan Yuletide. Attend a ritual, be part of a
festival, or host a party.
