4. A ship locates originally at 350 m to the west of a beacon. It sails 250 m to the east and then sails 660 m
to the west. Taking positions to the east of the beacon as positive, find the position of the ship now.
(3 marks)

m
The ship now locates at 760m to the west of the beacon.

5. Solve the following equations. (6 marks)

(a)
– (d + 4) = –6(3 – d)
–d – 4 = –18 + 6d
–d – 6d = –18 + 4
–7d = –14
d =2

(b)

= –2

= –2(6)

3(x – 4) – 2(2x + 3) = –12

3x – 12 – 4x – 6 = –12
3x – 4x = –12 + 12 + 6
–x=6
x = –6
22-23/Mid-year Exam/F.1/Math/P.7

6. (a) Find the H.C.F. and L.C.M. of 60, 75 and 90 by prime factorization. (5 marks)

60 = 22 × 3 × 5
75 = × 3 × 52
90 = 2 × 32 × 5
H.C.F. = 3×5
= 15
L.C.M. = 22 ×32 ×52
= 900

(b) Anthony, Ben and Chris start running together around a circular track at the starting point from the
same direction. They take 60 seconds, 75 seconds and 90 seconds to run one lap respectively. Chris
claims that they will meet within 10 minutes after they start running. Do you agree? Explain your
answer. (3 marks)

L.C.M. of 60, 75 and 90 is 900.

900 seconds = minutes

= 15 minutes
> 10 minutes
Disagree.

7. The sum of three consecutive multiples of 3 is 270. Using the method of equation, find the values of these
three numbers. (4 marks)

Let x be the smallest number.

x + (x +3) + (x +3 + 3) = 270
3x + 9 = 270
3x = 261
x = 87
The three consecutive multiples of 3 are 87, 90 and 93.
22-23/Mid-year Exam/F.1/Math/P.8

8. Every day, Tony spends of his time sleeping and of his time studying. Then, the remaining time
8 12
will be his leisure time. (5 marks)
(a) How many hours does he spend on sleeping every day?

The time he spends on sleeping

= 9 hours

(b) Tony claims that his leisure time is less than 90 hours in a week. Do you agree? Explain your answer.

The time he spends on leisure in a week

= 91 hours
> 90 hours
Disagree.

9. Kitty has some candies and Betty has 6 more candies than Kitty. Two days later, each of them eats
12 candies and the number of candies Kitty has is two-thirds of that of Betty’s. Find the original number
of candies each of them has. (4 marks)

Let x be the original number of candies Kitty has.

x – 12 =

3(x – 12) = 2(x – 6)

3x – 36 = 2x – 12
3x – 2x = –12 + 36
x = 24
The original number of candies Kitty has is 24.

The original number of candies Betty has = 24 + 6

= 30
22-23/Mid-year Exam/F.1/Math/P.9

10. The figure shows a square of side 10 cm and a rectangle with length x cm and width y cm. It is given that
the area of the shaded region is A cm2. (3 marks)

(a) Write down the formula for calculating the value of A.

A = 10 × 10 – x × y
A = 100 – xy

(b) If x = 7 and y = 5, find the area of the shaded region.

A = 100 – (7)(5)
A = 100 – 35
A = 65
The area of the shaded region is 65 cm2.

11. It is given that the general term Tn of a sequence is 3n + 1. Peter claims that the sum of the first 4 terms
is an odd number. Do you agree? Explain your answer. (4 marks)

=3+1 =4
=9+1 = 10
= 27 + 1 = 28
= 81 + 1 = 82

= 124

The sum of the first 4 terms is not an odd number.

Disagree.

12. There is mL of tea in a jar. After filling (3a  10 ) cups of capacity 200 mL each, 100 mL of tea
2
is left. (5 marks)
(a) Find the value of a.

= 100

= 100 × 2

725a – 400(3a – 10) = 200

725a – 1200a + 4000 = 200
–475a = –3800
a =8

(b) Find the original amount of tea in the jar.

The original amount of tea in the jar

= 2900 mL

13. Suppose that is the general term of a sequence. (5 marks)

(a) Find the 3rd term of the sequence.

(b) Is 2 a term of the sequence? Explain your answer by the method of equation.
Let Tk = 2

2 =

2(5k + 9) =k
10k + 18 =k
10k – k = –18
9k = –18
k = –2
k is not a positive integer.
2 is not a term in the sequence.

14. In order to encourage people to save energy by reducing the consumption of electricity, the electricity
company proposed the following charging plan. (7 marks)
Consumption per month Charge
up to 50 units $1.5 per unit of electricity
over 50 units For the first 50 units, $1.5 per unit;
for the consumption thereafter, $2 per unit
(a) Jacky consumed 72 units of electricity in June, what is the charge?

Jacky’s charge = 50 × 1.5 + (72 – 50) × 2

= 75 + 22 × 2
= 75 + 44
= $119

(b) The charge of electricity of Doris in June is $200. What is her consumption of electricity?

Let x be the consumption of electricity of Doris in June.

50 × 1.5 + (x – 50) × 2 = 200
75 + 2x – 100 = 200
2x = 200 – 75 + 100
2x = 225
x = 112.5
Her consumption of electricity in June is 112.5 units.

(c) Betty finds that her average charge of electricity in June is $1.6 per unit. What is her consumption
of electricity?

Let y be the consumption of electricity of Betty in June.

50 × 1.5 + (y – 50) × 2 = 1.6y
75 + 2y – 100 = 1.6y
2y – 1.6y = – 75 + 100
0.4y = 25
y = 62.5
Her consumption of electricity in June is 62.5 units.
