Doctor: Good morning, please take a seat. My name is Doctor Eva Smith. What seems to be the
matter?
Patient: Well, I haven’t felt very well for a few days now so I thought I should come and get a check-
up.
Doctor: So what symptoms have you been experiencing?
Patient: My stomach hurts and I’ve had diarrhea.
Doctor: Have you been sick?
Patient: No.
Doctor: Any headaches?
Patient: Yes.
Doctor: Let me check your temperature... (pause). Yes, you do have a slight fever.
Patient: I go from feeling very hot and sweaty to feeling cold and shaky. What do you think it is?
Doctor: Do you have any allergies?
Patient: No, none.
Doctor: What have you eaten recently? Anything that might have disagreed with you?
Patient: I don’t think so...Actually, I did try a new restaurant at the weekend. I ordered the fish
special, but it tasted good.
Doctor: The fish might not have been refrigerated properly. I am going to give you something to help
with the stomachache and diarrhea and you need to drink plenty of liquids. You should rest
for a day or two. Here is the prescription. You need to take one tablet every twelve hours,
for three days. If you are still not feeling well by Friday, come back.
Patient: OK, thank you very much.
Doctor: You are welcome. I hope you feel better soon.

This stage is for students to focus on common injuries. First, elicit and check the meaning of the word injury. Then
ask the students to complete the descriptions with the correct injury. Check the answers as a group. Review the
form and pronunciation of each word.

This stage is to develop listening skills in the context of a doctor’s appointment. Tell the students they are going
to listen to a conversation and answer the questions. Give them time to read the questions before playing the

the answers as a group.

and doctor. First, show the students the flow chart. Then put the students into pairs and give them each their
roleplay card. Give the students a few minutes to check they understand their role and the vocabulary.
Listen carefully during the task. Note any errors or good examples of language to provide post-activity language
feedback.

This is a quick game to review the vocabulary. It is a game of charades called ‘What’s the matter?’ Put the students
into pairs. Give them each their cards. They take turns miming their illnesses. They have to guess the illness and
put it in a sentence. Demonstrate the game first.
