Product Description
The ROLLTEC® reinforcing bar end preparation system is
a simple and effective system to mechanically splice two
reinforcing bars. It consists in peeling out the ribs and rolling
• C o s t e ff e c t i v e a l t e r n a ti ve to l a p
a thread at the end of the bar. It is done in only one operation.
splicing.
• R e d u c e s s t e e l w a s t a ge .
• E n a b l e s m u l t i p l e r e - u se o f fo r m
works.
• S h o r t e n s c o n s t r u c t i o n cycl e ti m e .

Depending on the regularity and shape of the bar ribs, as well as the
quality of the shear cut, the thread may not always look very clean and
the ribs may still be partially apparent. The look of the thread doesn’t
affect its performance.

A clean shear cut is sufficient, the bar does not need saw cut. Bad shear
cuts can be processed, but the shear cut defects will not be corrected by
the Rolltec® threading machine and will remain apparent after threading.

Bar end preparation must be done exclusively with machines provided

by Dextra and following the instructions provided in our Rolltec® bar end
preparation quality manual. Consult us for technical details of our range
of machinery (Please specify the minimum and maximum bar diameters
that you need to process).
CAD & BIM
The mechanical performance of ROLLTEC® splices of grade 460B,
B500B and B500C EN 10080 bars complies with the requirements of CAD & BIM tools to support design engineers
B.S. 8110. The mechanical performance of ROLLTEC® splices and in the drawing and modelling of structures are
headed bars of grade 60, 75 and 80 ASTM A615 and A706 bars complies available in the download section of
with the requirements of ACI 318 chapters 12 and 21, as well as of the www.dextragroup.com
AASHTO bridge design code.
For designer tools support, contact us at:
However, thanks to its rolled threading process, the fatigue resistance [email protected]
of ROLLTEC® splices is much better than that specified in the AASHTO
code.

The mechanical performance of ROLLTEC® splices of grade 400, 400W,

500 and 500W CAN/CSA G30.18 bars complies with CAN/CSA A23.3
and CAN/CSA S6.

Standard splices (Type A)

Standard splices are accomplished by use of STEP1

a standard coupler matching the bars threads.

STEP2

STEP3

OD

Type A splice. See Assembly instruction N° AI-RL01E.

Position Splices (Type B)

When both bars would be a burden to STEP1

rotate, for example because of their size, the
ROLLTEC® system simply extends the thread
onto the ribs of the bar, thereby enabling the
coupler to be fully screwed onto it. It is then
STEP2
unscrewed from one bar and back onto the
second bar to accomplish the connection.

The ROLLTEC® system conveniently uses

the same coupler to do standard splices and STEP3
position splices. The difference between both
splices is limited to the length of the thread on
the bar: refer to table 1 for dimensions.

Position Splices (Type C)

STEP1
Type C position splices are type B connections
where the thread has been further extended to
accommodate a lock nut. They are ideal when
the second bar is bent and must be oriented in

Caging Splices
Connection of single bars STEP1 RA

When the bars cannot be brought butt to butt

(as it happens often in cages manufacturing),
ROLLTEC® Caging splices are the answer.
Both bars are threaded with a standard STEP2
Max Gap
ROLLTEC® thread, and a “Caging Assembly
Set” is used to connect them.

This set is constituted of three pieces pre-

assembled together : a caging stud, a long
caging coupler and a lock-nut. The end of the STEP3 RC

caging stud bears a female thread that fits

on one bar (Preferably the top bar in case of
vertical cages).

If one of the bars is concreted before assembly of STEP4

the reinforcement, its thread must be protected by a
pocket former (See page 10).

Connection of bundled bars STEP1

In order to accommodate the thickness of

the coupler, a minimum spacing should be
C
maintained between the bar ends to connect
bundled bars with the ROLLTEC® caging S
system. The bar ends should be staggered
so that the movement of the caging couplers
is not obstructed by the neighboring bar. STEP2 Max Gap
Minimum values for spacing and staggering
are given in table 4. The spacing “c” is the
center-to-center value. The staggering length
“s” is from bar end to bar end.

There is no need to stagger the bars if the

center-to-center spacing is more than the
diameter of the couplers and the dimension of Max Gap
the lock nut.

Transition Splices
Transition Splices (via the bar)

When there is a need to splice bars of different STEP1

sizes, it is allowable in most cases (Ref table
below) to reduce the size of the larger bar and
to use a standard coupler.

STEP2
This however might need to be done in
several steps, as not more than 2 mm on the
diameter should be peeled off at a time. The
machine must therefore be re-set for each
machining step. The whole batch of bars
should be processed at each downsizing step. STEP3
In any case, productivity and peeling tools
consumption will be affected.

Weldable Couplers

For composite construction where concrete

reinforcement bars must be welded to a steel
structure, Rolltec weldable couplers must be
used.

This is a nut made of weldable-grade steel

that bears a large chamfer suitable for single
bevel butt welding.

See Assembly instruction N° AI-CW01E.

development length would allow.
Typical applications include exterior beam-column connections, roof
corners, pile feet, pile caps, cantilevered members, corbels, etc. In beam-column connections, headed bars in beam reinforcement should
extend to the far side of the column core.
Just like hooked bars, headed bars provide end anchorage by a
combination of bond and end bearing on the concrete. In wall corners and roof corners, headed bars should be used on inner
bars but are not recommended on outer bars.
But headed bars bond better with the concrete because, for a given

Bar End Preparation Installation

Reinforcing bars are individually prepared by having a ROLLTEC® thread The mechanical connection is achieved by screwing the coupler onto one
made on one or both of their ends by a Dextra machine. The machine bar, and then screwing in the second bar, and tightening it with a pipe
is preferably installed at a fabricator’s workshop. Bar end preparation wrench.Assembly instructions provided by Dextra must be followed.
instructions provided by Dextra must be followed.
The end of the threads tapers up to the core diameter of the bar, so
the number of threads emerging from the coupler depends on the actual
diameter of the bar as well as on the quality of the shear cut.
