Benedicts Test For Reducing Sugars

The document outlines a laboratory procedure for conducting Benedict's test to identify reducing sugars in glucose and distilled water. It includes an introduction defining reducing sugars, the aim of the experiment, detailed procedural steps, results interpretation, and a discussion on the findings. The conclusion summarizes the learning outcome of successfully performing the test.

BENEDICTS TEST FOR REDUCING SUGARS IN GLUCOSE AND DISTILLED WATER (1

Mark if same 0.5 marks)

INTRODUCTION (5 marks)
Definition - A reducing sugar is any sugar that is capable of acting as a reducing agent. / A
sugar with a free aldehyde or the ketone group. (1 mark)
Examples- glucose, fructose, glyceraldehydes, lactose, arabinose and maltose, etc (1 mark
for any correct example)
Importance- energy or taste- sweetening (1 mark for any one)
Test- benedicts (1 mark)
Introduce the lab (Therefore, in today´s lab…) (1 mark)

AIM (2 Marks)
To learn how to perform a benedicts test for reducing sugars in Glucose and Distilled water

PROCEDURE (2 Marks)
To 1ml of glucose, 1ml benedict solution was added. (0.5 mark)
To 1ml of tap water, 1ml benedict solution was added. (0.5 Mark)
The two test tubes were placed in water bath for 5 minutes and observations were noted. (1 mark)

RESULTS (5 Marks)
Table summarizing results of Benedict’s test in Glucose and Distilled water (1 mark).
Sample Reagent Observations Interpretation
Glucose solution Benedict Colour changed from High level of reducing
blue to green to sugars present (1)
yellow to orange to
brick-red (1)
Distilled water Benedict Colour remains Reducing sugars
unchanged / remains absent (1)
blue (1)

DISCUSSION (4 Marks)
The glucose solution had high levels of reducing sugar whileas the control had no reducing sugars as
it remained (blue) unchanged in the presence of Benedict’s. (2 marks)
Principle of test- the soluble cupric ions (Cu2+) in Benedict's reagent are reduced to insoluble
cuprous ions (Cu+) (1 mark)
Benedict's solution can be used to test for glucose in the urine or food labelling (any one
1mark)
CONCLUSION (2 marks)
One learnt how to conduct a Benedict’s test for reducing sugars. (Therefore this experiment was a
success or failure)
