ons-for-healthcare/

Heart failure means that the heart is too weak to pump blood around the body
efficiently. It is a growing health issue made worse by late diagnosis. Around 1 in
100 adults have heart failure, rising to 1 in 7 people over the age of 85.

6
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with around
35,000 deaths every year. Two recent studies reported that AI could help
determine whether or not lung nodules (abnormal growths) seen on a CT scan,
are cancerous.

Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) leads to loss of central vision.
It is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK. Development of the condition can
be rapid and treatment success is dependent on early diagnosis and intervention.
If the disease progresses to both eyes, people may be unable to read, recognise
faces, drive or carry out other everyday activities

7
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Patients
whose lung cancer has specific genetic features may benefit from targeted
drug treatments.

Ambulances in England take around 350,000 people a month to A&E. AI could

help paramedics predict who does not need to go to A&E. Ambulance transport
decisions are hard to make, but avoiding unnecessary attendance at A&E would
help the service run more smoothly.

8
The 10 examples in this Collection are a small but current sample of the research
addressing important health challenges. They add to the mounting body of
evidence demonstrating the benefits that this digitally enhanced analytical
capacity can bring to the NHS.

The research demonstrates that AI has the potential to enable services to be

more efficient and to predict patients’ needs. It could help doctors diagnose
conditions earlier, and provide personalized treatments.

AI can help:

● select the patients most likely to benefit from specific treatments

● identify disease early and accurately
● make services more efficient by improving predictions of people’s needs.

All of the technologies discussed need, or would benefit from, additional

research. This will help provide deeper insight into how these tools could work in
routine clinical practice, their long-term effect on patient outcomes and their
overall value for money. Careful regulation is essential.

The Benefits of AI in Healthcare

Source: https://www.ibm.com/blog/the-benefits-of-ai-in-healthcare/

How can artificial intelligence benefit healthcare?

Better machine learning (ML) algorithms, more access to data,

cheaper hardware, and the availability of 5G have contributed to the
increasing application of AI in the healthcare industry, accelerating the
pace of change. AI and ML technologies can sift through enormous
volumes of health data—from health records and clinical studies to
genetic information—and analyze it much faster than humans.

10
AI might help make healthcare operations more efficient
Healthcare organizations are using AI to improve the efficiency of all
kinds of processes, from back-office tasks to patient care.

The following are some examples of how AI might be used to benefit

staff and patients:

Administrative workflow: Healthcare workers spend a lot of time

doing paperwork and other administrative tasks.

Virtual nursing assistants: One study found that 64% of patients

are comfortable with the use of AI for around-the-clock access to
answers that support nurses provide.

Dosage error reduction: AI can be used to help identify errors in how a

patient self-administers medication.

Less invasive surgeries: AI-enabled robots might be used to

work around sensitive organs and tissues to help reduce blood
loss, infection risk and post-surgery pain.

Artificial intelligence is being used in healthcare for everything from

answering patient questions to assisting with surgeries and developing
new pharmaceuticals.

11
How can artificial intelligence benefit healthcare?

According to Statista, the artificial intelligence (AI) healthcare market,

which is valued at $11 billion in 2021, is projected to be worth $187
billion in 2030. That massive increase means we will likely continue to
see considerable changes in how medical providers, hospitals,
pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and others in the
healthcare industry operate.

AI might help make healthcare operations more efficient

Healthcare organizations are using AI to improve the efficiency of all
kinds of processes, from back-office tasks to patient care. The
following are some examples of how AI might be used to benefit staff
and patients:

Administrative workflow: Healthcare workers spend a lot of time

doing paperwork and other administrative tasks. AI and
automation can help perform many of those mundane tasks,
freeing up employee time for other activities and giving them
more face-to-face time with patients.

12
For example, generative AI can help clinicians with note-taking and
content summarization that can help keep medical records as
thoroughly as possible.

Virtual nursing assistants: One study found that 64% of patients
are comfortable with the use of AI for around-the-clock access to
answers that support nurses provide. AI virtual nurse
assistants—which are AI-powered chatbots, apps, or other
interfaces—can be used to help answer questions about
medications, forward reports to doctors or surgeons and help
patients schedule a visit with a physician.

Dosage error reduction: AI can be used to help identify errors in
how a patient self-administers medication. One example comes
from a study in Nature Medicine, which found that up to 70% of
patients don’t take insulin as prescribed. An AI-powered tool that
sits in the patient’s background (much like a wifi router) might be
used to flag errors in how the patient administers an insulin pen
or inhaler.

Less invasive surgeries: AI-enabled robots might be used to
work around sensitive organs and tissues to help reduce blood
loss, infection risk and post-surgery pain.

Fraud prevention: Fraud in the healthcare industry is enormous,
at $380 billion/year, and raises the cost of consumers’ medical
premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

13
Implementing AI can help recognize unusual or suspicious
patterns in insurance claims, such as billing for costly services or
procedures that are not performed, unbundling (which is billing
for the individual steps of a procedure as though they were
separate procedures), and performing unnecessary tests to take
advantage of insurance payments.

AI has the potential to improve the healthcare user experience

AI technologies like natural language processing (NLP), predictive

analytics, and speech recognition might help healthcare providers
have more effective communication with patients. AI might, for
instance, deliver more specific information about a patient’s treatment
options, allowing the healthcare provider to have more meaningful
conversations with the patient for shared decision-making.

5 Benefits of Using AI in Healthcare

Source: https://www.wwt.com/article/5-benefits-of-using-ai-in-healthcare

In the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has become the most powerful
agent of transformation in the healthcare industry. Learn how healthcare
providers can take advantage of AI's benefits.
To help providers best understand how to take advantage of AI within their
ecosystem, let's take a look at the top five benefits of using AI in healthcare.

Population health management

Healthcare organizations can use AI to aggregate and analyze patient health
data to proactively identify and prevent risk, close preventive care gaps, and
better understand how clinical, genetic, behavioral and environmental factors
affect the population.

Clinical decision making

Applying artificial intelligence in certain healthcare processes can reduce the
time and resources needed to examine and diagnose patients. With this,
medical personnel can save more lives by acting faster. Machine learning
(ML) algorithms can identify risk exponentially faster and with much more
accuracy than traditional workflows. Done correctly, these algorithms can
automate inefficient, manual processes thus speeding up diagnosis and
reducing diagnostic errors — which remains the single largest cause of
medical malpractice claims.

15
AI-assisted surgery
One of the most innovative AI use cases in healthcare is in surgical robotics
applications. The maturity of AI robotics has led to the development of AI
surgical systems that can accurately execute the tiniest movements with
perfect precision. These systems can perform complex surgical operations,
thus reducing the average wait period for procedures, as well as the risk,
blood loss, complications and possible side effects of said procedures.

Improved healthcare accessibility

Studies show significant gaps in average life expectancy between developed
and underdeveloped nations as a result of limited or zero healthcare
accessibility. Developing nations lag behind their counterparts in deploying
and leveraging innovative medical technologies that can deliver appropriate
care to the population. Also, a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals
(including surgeons, radiologists and ultrasound technicians) and properly
equipped healthcare centers impact care delivery in such regions. AI can
enable a digital infrastructure that facilitates faster diagnosis of symptoms and
triage patients to the right level and modality of care to foster a more efficient
healthcare ecosystem.

Optimize performance and operational efficiency

Modern healthcare operations are a complex combination of deeply
interconnected systems and processes. This makes it quite difficult to optimize
cost while maximizing asset utilization and ensuring low wait times for
patients.

16
Reflection 1

Kwint (2023) narrates her research about some promising

interventions for AI in healthcare. She explored how to develop AI

innovations to provide digitally-enabled care that helps clinicians and

supports patients. Statistics and authoritative references give

credibility and emphasize the potential of AI in healthcare.

17
Reflection 2

Kwint (2023) is an expository article about some promising

interventions for AI in healthcare. The writer uses statistics and

authoritative references so that the article is professional and emphasizes

and persuades the reader about the potential of AI in healthcare.

IBM Education (2023) is a blog explaining the usefulness of AI in

healthcare. Direct speech is used by the writer to convince the reader that

using AI to make diagnoses may reduce treatment. Statistics such as “50%

and improve health outcomes by 40%” persuades the reader that AI is

beneficial..

Cordes (2021) is an expository article on the benefits of using AI in

healthcare. It uses scientific and technical language to inspire the reader’s

trust in the information. Cordes’ explanation that there are “significant gaps

in average life expectancy between developed and underdeveloped

nations” suggests that AI can enable a digital infrastructure that facilitates

faster diagnosis of symptoms.

18
Reflection 3

I learned that AI can help select the patients most likely to benefit

from specific treatments, identify disease early and accurately and make

services more efficient by improving predictions of people’s needs. The

research helped me gain a deeper understanding into how AI could work in

routine clinical practice, their long-term effect on patient outcomes and their

overall value for money. Working as a group allowed me to explore more

promising interventions for AI in healthcare and understand the current

level of maturity of AI that can lead to the development of surgical systems.

The group work was beneficial because learning how these systems and

other healthcare processes can reduce the time and resources needed to

examine and diagnose patients was done exponentially faster and with

much more accuracy because of the brainstorming of the group. I coped

with challenges in my group by giving feedback on any observations that

did not meet the criteria that was provided. I was able to find and read

about how AI might be used to flag errors in how a patient administers

medication and evaluate that 50% of people don’t take their medication as

prescribed.

both benefits and risks. Boz (2023) uses a descriptive and engaging tone to
explain AI’s influence on smart homes, making the information accessible
to a broad audience.

Similarly, Marr (2021) utilizes an expository style, incorporating real-world

examples and visuals in the video format to enhance comprehension.

21
Each artifact successfully answers key research questions by providing
well-supported arguments and diverse perspectives on AI.

Moreover, our group found the selected artefacts to be both effective and
insightful. IBM Education (2023) was particularly useful in demonstrating
AI’s transformative role in healthcare.

Mott (2023) provided a balanced perspective on self-driving cars, making it
