The Towninator

Introduction
Introducing the Towninator - a tool designed to easily create lively and bustling
towns, cities, and metropolises while emphasizing storytelling in a fantasy
medieval tabletop RPG setting.

With this tool, Game Masters can prioritize storytelling and enjoyment at the
gaming table, rather than spending time on world building.

Please note that this tool is not intended for comprehensive world building.

The Towninator and how to use it
The Towninator is a single-page tool that streamlines the process of creating and
managing towns in your fantasy medieval tabletop RPG setting. The front sheet,
also known as the Towninator, contains all the necessary information to keep the
story flowing and players engaged. With it, Game Masters can keep track of all
towns in their world, and document how they evolve and are shaped by player
actions during play sessions.

Now, grab a towninator sheet and give your town a name!

Terrain
First, let's establish the foundation. Where is the location of this city?

The terrain modifier will have an effect on one or more categories in your town. You
will be able to pick or roll the Main terrain feature and its modifier.

You may distribute the points as you wish

After you have rolled the Main Terrain Feature, you have the option to roll for the
Secondary Terrain Feature; this is optional.

The Secondary Terrain Feature will only have an effect on the development points
in 1 category of your choice.

Town size and Age
When you start by making your town, you will decide how big you want your town
to be, or roll a six-sided dice (D6) and refer the rolled number to the table under
Roll.

Example: We rolled 1, and we got a Hamlet-sized town.

Write Hamlet next to the “Size” keyword on your towninator sheet. To know how
big your town is, refer to the Inhabitant's column to see how many are LIVING in
the town and choose a number that does not exceed the inhabitant number.

D8 Size Inhabitants Districts

1 Thorpe < 50 0

2 Hamlet < 100 1

3 Village 100 - 1,000 2

4 Small town/ 1,001 - 25,000 2

5 Large Town 25,001 - 50,000 3

6 Small city >50,000 4

7 Large city >100,000 5

8 Metropolis <200,000 6

Age
The age of the town will be rolled from this table:

D6 Age name Lifespan

1 Newly founded 0-5 years

2 Young 6-10 Years

3 Aged 11 - 200 Years

4 Old 201 - Years

5 Very old 200-800 Years

6 Ancient 801+ Years

8
Districts
If you have rolled everything except hamlet you’ll have district in your town, use
the next table to roll the district's names. Roll a d100 two times and pair the two
rolls to get a district name:
Use the following two tables to generate district names.

Categories
The category number is a way for you as a GM to quickly glance at and get a feel on
how this town is. The number in a category can be at minimum 1.

A 1 in a category is distressing. Meaning that this aspect of the town is maybe more
an idea in the town than it has an actual physical representation.

A 30 is closing in on something that is REALLY excellent.

Depending on what size town you got, you’ll have a different amount of Category
Dice. These dice are used to roll the specific stats in each City Category.

These are 2 of the 11 Categories: Crime and Culture

Roll each of the dice listed in the Category Dice column and write down the results
in each category.

You may assign each of these values to a Category as you see fit, in any order.

Thorpe 11 × d4

Development

This feature helps you monitor the progress of specific categories within your
town. Each time your players take actions that positively impact a category, fill in a
dot on the corresponding development track.

Development are represented as the 3 circles you see at the bottom of each category.

When you roll for development, take a D4 and roll for each category.

If you roll a 4 on a d4, you will add 1 to the category number and not fill in any
development points.

12
E.g. If you have a “4” in a category, and you roll a d4 - 4. This makes your category score
5

Having 3 circles ticked in development and getting the 4th will trigger this category
to develop to the next level.

Buildings
Each category has 6 building types connected to them, and each building acts as a
representation of what it is.

Building Points
After you have rolled categories, you will be able to place points into building types
next to the category boxes. Each building may at maximum have 5 points, which
defines the quality of the building type.

Now you have 1 Building Point for every 1 Category Point.

Anyone building type cannot exceed more than half of the value category.

E.g. a category of 6 can only have building types, with a max of 3. This value change
if the category value gets higher

Quality scale

Quality

- Forlorn

1 Poor

2 Simple

3 Fair

4 Good

5 Excellent
If you can’t decide on what building you want to add, please look at the building
description chapter back in this rules document.

If you have placed one of your points next to a tavern does not mean that there is
only one tavern, but that the taverns in this town reach at max 1 on the lifestyle
scale, which is poor.

If you have a town with “5 tavern” now, at least 1 of the taverns in this town are of
the excellent quality.

13
Building quality

The following table is an example of the effect of the different building quality has
on the guild

Quality

1 Poor A place to meet other like-minded

2 Simple With nice interior and a better placement in the city

3 Fair A dress code for the initiated and a bigger building

4 Good The guild is a part of the high society of the city

5 Excellent This guild runs the city

14
City specialty
You can either pick or roll your city’s Specialty. This is where you want this town to
have its focus whether it’ll be Mercantile, Military, Culture etc.
Each specialty will have a unique influence on each category, and even some
buildings might be affected.

You can either pick or roll from the table below

NPCs
Having a list of names on the front page is always helpful.
You can further develop them by using the NPC module. Each town will have three
unique characters:
● One from the highest valued category
● One from the lowest valued category
● One from the city's specialty.

When creating an NPC, indicate the category or specialty next to their name. Use
the provided table to generate a name for your NPCs.
You’ll find it on the next two pages called NPC table 1 and 2

Fame
Your players will interact with the different elements of the town during sessions.
In a good or bad way. This will of course have an effect on how their fame is
throughout the settlement. If they do bad things they’ll become infamous - if they
do good they’ll become famous. It's that easy

Depending on what the fame level the players have in a given town, this will aid in
developing the town or convincing a NPC, or it could throw the town right down
the gutter.

When gaining 1 development point in any category in the town, you will add the
fame modifier to the point.

Gaining 1 development point and having a +2 fame modifier means that you’ll gain 3
development points.

NPC sheet
Having a list of names at the front page is always good, you can expand and go into
depth by adding in the NPC module.

Each town will have 3 uniquely generated characters

1 character spawning from the highest valued category, one spawning from the
lowest valued Category, and lastly one spawning from the city’s specialty.

When spawning an NPC, you’ll write the Category or specialty in the box next to
their name.

Use the previous chapter “NPCs” for name generation.

NPC sheet in depth / Personality / Main traits

So your players want to speak with one of your NPC
There are 5 main traits that every NPC will have:
Main trait Description

Extroversion Tendency to be talkative, sociable, etc.

Neuroticism Tendency to experience negative emotions, such as anger,

worry, etc.

Conscientiousness Tendency to be careful, follow rules, hardworking, etc

Agreeableness Tendency to agree and go along with others rather than

assort one's self.

Each of these main traits have 4 sub traits that define this NPC that have an
opposing version

25
Like so:

Loner is opposed to joiner, Quiet opposed to Talkative, etc.

When rolling a character, you will roll a D12 for each trait. This will give you X
amount of points you can distribute into each opposing training.
You always start by filling in the middle circles of the 5.
Going one way will exclude you from going the other way:

Filling a trait with 8 points might end up looking something like this:
