ensure it is on manual.
 Machine to be inspected and check
sheet filled out before operation
 Machine should not be operated if
major faults are noted
 Ensure no loose electrical gear is
exposed
 Upon receiving the job card you must
ensure the job card information and the
coil received have the same serial
number
 Set up both the slitter head and
separator according to the works order
on the job card
 Check the setting before feeding the
coil
 Alignment of the coil is crucial so that
the scrap is as close to equal on both
sides as possible. This means the sides
of the slit will be the same size as the
rest of the strips and the edges won’t
be damaged.
 Ensure that the clearance between each
slitter knife is equal. This will prevent
knives from chipping

 During Operation
 Run the machine and check that the
material is moving through it correctly

 Once the slits come through the slitter
head, check them for burrs, check the
width and thickness. This must be
recorded on the QA sheet.
 These recordings must be done at least
three (3) times. Once at the beginning,
then at the middle and then at the end
of the coil across the width

Whilst operating the machine

 Be vigilant for overhead cranes moving
stock
 Be cautious of moving parts in the
machine
 Always keep PPE on & secured whilst in
the warehouse
 Keep to designated walkways as much
as possible
 Be cautious of sharp material whilst
walking through the areas
 Follow the “buddy system” whereby
you are not operating the machine
alone in case of an accident
 Do not try to “fix” or make adjustments
to the machine while it is running
 In the event of a machine malfunction
make sure to push the emergency lock
out stop.
 Continue the production of the job until
completed.
 At the end of each run each strip should

be secured by putting tape and/or
welding of strips

Switching Off

 Switching  Ensure no loose hanging clothing

Machine off  Ensure PPE is still in place
 Be wary of moveable parts
 Be cautious of sharp objects
 Be vigilant of overhead cranes
 Keep to designated walkways where
possible
 Switch off the machine at the console
and ensure all moveable parts of the
machine come to a halt before moving
the slits
 Once the machine is at a full stop
continue with the strapping of the
bundle
 If the operator is happy, ensure the slit
is correctly labelled and that all
required fields are filled in on
completed job cards.
 Once the slit has been safely removed
and labelled, refer back to machine
start up and repeat the process
 Do not expose any electrical gear
 Ensure the machine is off and cannot be
accidentally switched on or operated
 Do not try to make any adjustments to
the machine if you are not authorized

to do so
 Ensure housekeeping is done once the
production job has been completed and
all waste is picked up, cleaned and
disposed of correctly before starting a
new job
 Only the maintenance team / manager
is authorized to change the blades,
gears, shafts etc.
