FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
- Formative assessments are designed to gather information about learner performance during
the learning process.
- The goal is not grading, but rather improving instruction based on ongoing assessment.
• Where am I going?
• Where I am now?
Where am I Going
• I can draw and write sentences about these actions using signal words to indicate
the sequence.
Where am I now?
This should be able to give the learners an idea where they are in reachingthe learning objective
and they should be given regular checks on progress on their way.
Formative Assessment strategies :
• Oral recitation
• Questioning
• Project outputs
• Surveys
• Writing activities
Writing could be an excellent formative assessment strategy because of the very nature of the
activity as a complex cognitive process. It helps provide an idea on how the learners think. This
is where good writing prompts will go along the wayto help the teacher gather information.
Feedback - provides the learners with a pictureessence of about their success and needs in order
to improve their performance.
Feedback must have the following traits in order to be effective:
• Goal-reference
• Tangible
• Actionable
mind’s eye.
• I got confused by your paper. You have a weak thesis and you have failed
Teachers provide the learners with a plan and activities to help them attain objectives. Using the
data from the formative assessment given to the learners, the teachers can now use them to plan,
to improve instruction or make the learning tweaks in his/her strategies, and to help learners
improve.
Conclusion:
Formative assessment serves as a valuable tool in the learning process, offering continuous
feedback that helps both teachers and learners. Unlike summative assessments, which evaluate
performance at the end of a learning period, formative assessments focus on:
•Oral recitation
•Questioning
•Writing activities
Teachers can gather insights into learner progress and make informed decisions about instruction.
Effective feedback plays a crucial role in formative assessment by providing students with:
•What can I do to get where I need to go? (Identifying steps for improvement)
•Teachers who apply formative assessment strategies can create more responsive and effective
lesson plans that cater to the needs of their students.
