1. Introduction
1.1 Profile/background of the organization
SINA Background
The name of the research organization is the Solomon Islands Nurse Association which can
be in short form as SINA. The owner of the organization is not a single individual, as SINA is
governed by a board of directors elected by its members. It has approximately 1200
registered nurses (Clements, K. and Foley, W.,, 2008). This organization was established in
1973 (''Solomon Island Nurse Association'', 2006). The location of the organization is
Chinatown SIDT building Honiara, Solomon Islands with the address of PO Box 1613. The
SINA is a professional organization that represents nurses in the Solomon Islands. SINA's
purpose is to promote nurse interests, advocates, and professional development. There are
many core activities associated with this organization such as advocacy which helps the
nurses have better working conditions and professional development. Moreover, networking
and quality improvements are also two essential core activities undertaken by SINA. By
engaging nurses to network with each other, they can share innovative ideas, information, and
experience and also collaborate in communities. This allows quality improvements for the
performance of the overall organization.
1.2 Aim
1.3 Summary of the findings and conclusions
Summarize the main project findings & conclusions. This is like an executive
summary of a report. It gives the reader a snapshot of the project’s findings
(interesting findings if any). Normally information in this sub-section is inserted
after the whole project is completed.
Must be in one or 2 paragraphs
2. Literature Review (This section should be between 1 to 1.5 pages)
Please review at least 6 literature from academic journal articles and the
textbook. (Academic writings do not permit students to use grey literature
(quick fix approach) example, encyclopedias, raw materials, newspapers, etc.)
In the LR, students are to critically evaluate organizations’ structures (including
their coordination, span of control, departmentalization, and environmental
forces/threats) and explain how structures are selected, their strengths,
weaknesses, and recommendations. These are the same topics you want to
investigate in your field research/project.
Use systematic LR – summarizing, reporting, and evaluating your LR findings.
Cite several journals per point and express your findings logically. Make sure
ideas and findings expressed on your LR flow logically.
An LR structure consists of an Introduction, body, and conclusion
3. Methodology & Data Collection Method (This section should be between
½ to ¾ of a page)
3.1 Methodology
The methodology is a systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied in a particular field of
study. It consists of the principles, processes, and rules that help researchers to conduct their
investigation and collect data. The purpose of the methodology is to ensure that the conduct of the
research is well-structured, and organized and allows for valid and accurate findings (Mary, 2018).
There are several types of research methodologies such as Quantitative research, Qualitative
Research, Analytical research, and applied research to help acing out research (Brown D. e., 2019)
3.2 Data Collection Methods
For the group assignment, we used both the primary and secondary methods to gather
relevant information sources for our assignment project. For the Primary process, we utilize
the qualitative approach/ method. This includes gathering information from respondents
based on their experiences and opinions regarding Collective Bargaining and Negotiation.
For the Secondary method, we collect information from e-resources from the USP library and
Google scholars. We also opt for a quantitative approach to gain clear insights into the
existing data analysis of the Solomon Islands Nurse Association.

4. Findings (This section should be 1.0 pages to 1.5 page
What type of collective bargaining is used at the Solomon Islands Nurse Associations?
The Solomon Islands Nurse Association (SINA) commonly uses bilateral collective
bargaining that involves union, employer, or healthcare management. This process involves
the union representing the Solomon Islands nurses negotiating terms and conditions to meet
the demands and interests of the nurses (Brown, 2019). The terms and conditions may
include work conditions and environment, wages, working hours, and other benefits in
employment terms. For example, in 2017 nurses in the Solomon Islands went on strike,
demanding to increase in salary and better working conditions. This is also the result of poor
working conditions, low wages, and a lack of resources in healthcare facilities. According to
the registered nurse Jimmy Kaluae a situation like this is when bilateral collective bargaining
comes in to negotiate with the healthcare management to meet the demands and interests of
the nurses in the Solomon Islands represented by the unions. He further comments that it
provides an opportunity for the nurses' association to advocate their interests and also address
relevant issues (Kaluae, 2024). Overall, bilateral collective bargaining at the Solomon Islands
Nurse Association plays a vital role in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and fairness in labor
relations within the nursing sector in the country.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using collective bargaining in SINA?
There are several advantages of bilateral collective bargaining including
Firstly, it provides a platform where negotiations between unions, employers, and healthcare
management. Various terms and conditions of employment are to be discussed by the parties
involved in the negotiation process. Members of the SINA can voice out their interest and
demand to the health care management to promote work advancements and better service.
Secondly, the bilateral collective bargaining process also helps to establish fair agreements
for the SINA members that address the needs and concerns of both employees and
employers. Rose Mary in the interview, stated that in situations like this, the nurses will also
be willing to work due to satisfaction with the fairness agreements done by the healthcare
management. This can also impact the health sector to provide equal performance that can
benefit the well-being of society (Mary R. , 2024).
Lastly, engaging in bilateral negotiations with the trade union, employer, and healthcare
management allows conflict resolution. Issues and concerns are heard and addressed through
dialogue and compromise. This can result in enhanced morale among workers and maintain a
harmonious work environment.
What are any 3 of your recommendations regarding the collective bargaining problem
used by your firm?
5. Discussion This section should be 1 page)
Discuss your findings by comparing and contrasting them with similar findings
based on your LR.
In the discussion section you may critically evaluate the CB process taken by
the organization of your choice,’ success and limitations”.
Bilateral collective bargaining is the process by which representatives of an employer
and a labor union discuss the terms and conditions of employment for the workers
represented by the union. The process of Bilateral Collective bargaining was as follows;
the first step is preparation and planning this refers to identifying the key issue and setting
objectives for the bargaining process. The second step is the Negotiation process where
the nurses form a union and discuss with their employer their proposal to reach a
mutually accepted agreement. The third step is drafting and ratification. This refers to
when the agreement is reached on all terms a written contract is drafted that includes all
negotiation presentations then both parties review it before ratifying it through votes by
the union members (nurses) and approval by the management. The fourth step is
implementation and enforcement where the agreement is implemented and the union
members adhere to the terms of the contract. The fifth step is the contract duration and
renewal. Duration relates to how long a collective agreement is valid, whereas renewable
implies whether the agreement may be extended or continued beyond its initial period
without having to start discussions again. The final step is the resolution of the dispute.
Disputes often arise during the collective bargaining process, thus resolving these issues
is crucial to maintain a harmonious working environment.
5. Conclusions (This section must be ½ a page)
It is like fitting the puzzles together by summarizing the main findings that
answer the main project questions and linking them to the main objectives of
the study. You may want to highlight the main lesson learned that generally
applies to Pacific and international organizations. And make 2 or 3
recommendations based on your findings.
