MLAG-EVPN-VXLAN - Arista

The document discusses Arista's EVPN-VXLAN and MLAG technologies, highlighting their advantages over traditional Layer 3 networks, such as reduced hops and support for broadcast traffic. It explains the architecture of spine and leaf networks, the redundancy provided by MLAG with two control planes, and the configuration requirements for peer links and port channels. Additionally, it covers the importance of VLANs in MLAG setups and commands for verifying configurations and inconsistencies between switches.

Arista - EVPN -VXLAN and MLAG

In L3 network , we can not transfer Boradcast to other L3 Network but in EVPN , we can do it.
Spine and Leaf Architecture :

Legacy DC :

Create VLAN and its Gateway = Core.

Inside client wants to reach Client via Internet => North South Traffic.

But in today’s Network :

Traffic is moving between DC it self.

Number of hops are more in Traditional Network :
Server-> Leaf-> Spine -> Leaf -> Other Side Server
1.Server to Server is 2 hops away.
Server to Server in Traditional : Access-> Distribution->Core -> Dist->Access : More Hops.
2. Leaf and Spine completely L3 Netowrk.
3. No Spanning Tree => Multiple Paths will be available (ECMP- Equal Cost Multi Path).
4. We will use VXLAN Technology and move vlan from Leaf1 to another Leaf via Tunneling
Technology.

MLAG of Arista :

Stack- 8 devices can be connected (Cisco)/Virtual Chassis - 10 Devices can be connected(Juniper) in

other Vendors
Only 1 control Plane I.e. 1 management ip. You can control all the Network devices.
If you have any problem in Control Plane, you can loose all devices access and no visibility!
If there is any Routing Problem , all devices will be effected.
In MLAG (Arista) and Juniper(Virtual Chassis) - you will get 2 Control Planes.
There is no Config Sync in MLAG Technology.
You have to configure both devices seperately in MLAG.
MLAG Technology is redundant in Layer2.

Bottom switch = access switch in Airbus.

We will do Port channel from bottom device.
Pre requisite:
-Keep Alive links and its configuration
-Data traffic will be trunked on these links.

As we have 2 Control Planes, if 1 switch is lost => still we can access via other Switch.
MLAG Topolgy is Layer2 redundant Topology.
We will learn how to make this as Layer3 redundant.

Lab:
Peer Links :
It is used to send Keep Alives + Data.
We need to have 1 vlan dedicated for this Peer Link , here it is vlan 4092.
LLDP Neighbor - LLDP enabled by default in Arista.

Port Channel :
Once you configure the port-channel on orther side, This Po status changes to connected.

Note: This Port channel should be in Trunk Mode.

As this is connecting the below device via MLAG.

Peer Link Vlan- Trunk Group:

Once you give this commant on the Peer Vlan, this vlan will be seperated from all other vlan groups
and dedicatedly used for MLAG Peering.
Command : trunk group xxxx-name
This vlan will not assigned to any link.

That is the problem, we need to pass this vlan on Peer link.

Now this vlan is passing via the Port-Channel, between 2 Arista Devices.

Config on other Switch :

Configure IP on Peer Links:

MLAG Domain Commands:

MLAG Domain - Primary Switch / Secondary Switch How ?
They will share MAC address and Lowest MAC device will become Primary Switch.
MLAG- Verification:

Validate wherhe there is any Config - inconsistency between Switches:

Use : show mlag detail
