The Straight Story

§ On August 25, 1994, The New York Times reported a very unusual story. It
1
was about a man from Iowa who went on a six-week journey on a lawnmower.
The 73-year-old man was determined to visit his sick brother in another state.
Alvin Straight, a quiet man who lived alone, found out that his 80-year-old
5 2
brother Henry was very sick. Alvin and Henry used to be close as young men, but they
hadn’t contacted each other for a long time. In fact, they hadn’t spoken in ten years.
However, Alvin decided he had to travel the 390 kilometers to visit his brother in
Wisconsin. This trip would usually take about five hours in a car.
10 But Alvin was in an unusual situation. He didn’t see well and was no longer
3
allowed to drive. He didn’t trust buses or trains, and he was too proud to ask anyone to
drive him. He decided the only solution was to get to Wisconsin using the only form of
transportation left to him, his old lawnmower. The lawnmower could only travel at a
top speed of ten kilometers an hour. On July 5, Alvin set off.
15 From the beginning, Alvin had many difficulties to deal with. His lawnmower
4
broke down* after only four days. He bought another one, which also needed constant
repair. On some days, he had to stop his journey because of bad weather. After six
weeks, Alvin finally reached his brother’s home.
Alvin’s story became well known after it appeared on television and in the
20 5
newspaper. Alvin didn’t want to be interviewed, even though many television shows
invited him. His unusual story was turned into a successful movie, The Straight Story,
in 1999. It shows the story of a man who was determined not to give up.
