BASIC MATHEMATICS MARKING SCHEMES.

1.(a) Solution

2 54 78
3 27 39
3 9 13
3 3 13
13 1 13
1 1 1
from above the GCD is 2x3=6. …………………………..(2 mark)

The side of each square is 6cm. ……………………………………..(1 mark)

(b) solution

Let the number of girls be x and number of boys be y ………………..(1/2 mark)

But the total number of pupils is 45

So x+y=45.

The average height of all pupilsis 152cm.

The total height of all pupils = 152x45= 6840cm ………………….(1/2 mark)

The average height of girls is 144cm:

Total height of girls = 144*x

The average height of boys is 168cm

Total height of boys = 168*y

Therefore the total height of all pupils = total height of boys+ total height of girls

6840=144x+168y

570= 12x+14y ……………………………………………….(1 mark)

Compare the equations

x+y=45 ……………(i)

12x+14y=570. ……..(ii)

Take equation (i) and make x the subject

X=45-y …………(iii)

1
Substitute eqn(iii) into eqn (ii)

12(45-y)+14y=570

540-12y+14y=570

2y=30

Y=15.

From eqn(iii)

X=45-y

X=45-15

X=30

Therefore the number of boys is 15 and the number of girls is 30 …………..(1 mark)

2. (a) solution

Total number of students =100

Number of students prefer music subject is 45.

Number of students prefer Theatre subject is 40

Number of students prefer both subjects is 5

Number of students who prefer none of the two subjects is required

From the Venn diagram

40 35 T

Then let the number of students who prefer none of the two subject be x

100= 40+5+35+x

100=80+x

X=100-20

X=20

Therefore the number of students prefers none of the subject is 20. ………………(3 marks)

4. (a) solution

Given that a*b=2a+7b, then find 5*(6*8)

If a*b= 2a+7b, a=6 , b=8 then (6*8)= ……………………….(1 mark)

(2x6)+ 7(8)= 68

Then 5*68

a=5, b=68 …………………………………………….(1 mark)

but a*b=2a+7b

=(2x5)+7(68)

=486.

Therefore 5*(6*8) = 486 ……………..(1 mark)

7x=1+20

7x=21

X=3.

But from eqn (iii)

Y=10-2x

Y=10-2x3

Y=4

Therefore the value of (x,y)=(3,4) ……………………….(2 marks)

(b) solution

x2+4y

x=3 and y= 4 …………………………………(1 mark)

then x2+4y = 32=4(4)

=9+16=25.

The value of x2+4y =25

x=2+3y ………….(iii)

substitute the eqn (iii) into eqn (i)

2+3y+y=30

2+4y=30

4y= 28

Y=7.

From eqn (iii)
