ABSTRACT

Most women agree that their responsibilities and position within the family are crucial to what women do
today. Women’s roles in society are usually limited to those of friends and caregivers. In contrast to
today, women are more developed, trained, and modern, allowing them to fill roles such as biological
mothers or childcare providers also contribute to the creation of excellent jobs outside the home. In the
past, the division of labor was still determined by considering the physical activity required. Men are
responsible for providing for the family, and women are responsible for the maintenance of the house.
But if women live at home and take care of the house, they will not be able to make their own money,
which is used as a measure of social status authority in society. Education is expected to produce
educators and leaders who conform to the standards of the general public for daily life. Every level of
education and social status affects participation in development. Increased group participation in
education also increases social and economic awareness. This study aims to understand the role of women
in achieving higher family social status, using a descriptive qualitative approach and Edward Wilson’s
nuture theory.

Keywords: Dual Role of Women, Family, Social Status, Nuture Theory

INTRODUCTION

Women’s participation in this era is not only fighting for equal rights but also carrying out the mandate to
continue development in their nation. The participation carried out by women involves two roles, namely
the role in tradition and the role in transition. In the traditional role, women position themselves as
children, as wives, as mothers, and as someone who takes care of household chores. In the transition role,
women play a role in the process of community development, as career women, and participate in

improving the economy. The involvement of women who have spread widely in all aspects of life
certainly has an influence on family life (Tyagi et al., 2021). The phenomenon that can be seen is the
number of women who help their families to improve the social status of their families either through
economics or education. Circumstances that force them to enter the job market. To achieve a job that can
raise the family status, they must adjust to achieve a higher level of education. The majority of the people
agree that the role of women today is inseparable from their role and position in the family. In the past,
women were only confined to a position as a companion to their partner and as a babysitter. In contrast to
today, women are more advanced, educated, and modern so that they are able to concurrently position as
housewives or children and also participate in producing extraordinary works outside the home. In the
past, the division of labor was still carried out by looking at the physical activity required. Men are
responsible for providing for the family and women are responsible for taking care of the house. But if
women are constantly at home and doing housework, they will not get their own money which functions
as a power and indicator of social status. In cultural development, this concept is used to underlie customs
that sometimes limit individual development. Women must stay at home, girls must yield to their
brothers, women are forbidden to have higher education, women must receive low wages, women can
work as long as they carry children, women must be able to manage household affairs. All of these
statements appear in society because society looks down on women. This injustice then gave birth to the
perception that the purpose of being born women was to do lowly jobs and continue to be lowly creatures.
How much work is done will only be considered lowly work. The ancient way of thinking of society
assumes that the existence of women will always exist after men (Aziz, 2023).

Gender equality is not new even though it does not cover all aspects such as education. However, this is
like a fresh breeze that is a relief for women. The participation of the community in increasing equality
further narrows the gap in education for men and women. This must continue to be considered because it
concerns an important aspect in people lives. If people are aware of how important the role of women is,
everyone dreams of equal rights to education will be quickly realized. But in reality, this is very difficult
to apply in people’s lives. Only some people understand and understand the importance of gender
equality, the rest are still old- fashioned. People who still have an old-fashioned mindset think that girls
should always be behind men. Some even think that women should not be highly educated. Even if it is
allowed, women must major in light sciences such as social sciences or economics. This is of course very
different from boys who are allowed to pursue the highest education possible and are given the freedom
to choose the science they want.

Calls for gender equality in the world of education continue to be voiced by gender activists even though
the result is always the same, namely the position of women after men. The number of female students
must be less than male students. In fact, it is women who have to feel the burden of family poverty due to
the monetary crisis. The number of the population, almost half of which are women, indicates that the
resources in Indonesia are actually quite large. The active participation of women and men will help the
country to achieve its goals, especially in the field of education. Education is one of the factors to
improve social status. Education is expected to produce education and behavior procedures that are in
accordance with the norms of hygiene for

the community. Education level and social status both have an influence on development participation.
The higher the level of education of family members, the higher the family’s awareness of social status
and development, so their participation in development is also greater. An educated person will be

appreciated in society so that his social status will indirectly continue to rise. The great influence of
educated people tends to be trusted by the public so that they are indirectly used as role models and
placed at a higher level of society. Based on the above description, the researcher uses the title The Dual
Role of Women in Raising Family Social Status Through Education: A Perspective of Edward Wilson’s
Nuture Theory” as the title of the study.

METHODOLOGY

The research method used in this study is a qualitative method. Qualitative research is one of the methods
in research that is used to research or observe the condition of an object naturally, the researcher's
position in this method is as a key instrument. The data collection techniques that will be used are in the
form of observation, interviews, documentation and qualitative data analysis. The results obtained when
using qualitative methods are in the form of emphasis on meaning rather than generalization. In addition,
this research was conducted with a descriptive approach. That is an approach that comes from the results
of deepening of the research subject or resource person through various in-depth observations and
interviews and must be described descriptively in qualitative notes. These records consist of field notes,
interview defects, methodological notes and theoretical notes. The sampling technique used in this study
is the purposive sampling technique. That is a technique by selecting population members who meet
certain criteria. This technique is not random sampling because not all members of the population can be
members of the sample. Purposive sampling is carried out because researchers make considerations based
on research objectives and to find previously known population traits or characteristics. In this study, the
researcher took 30 women who were or had pursued undergraduate education (S1) and 30 women with
the last education of high school/equivalent or below.

RESULTS

1. Woman

Women are associated with a term from various sides. This term is attached to the position of the media
realm, namely injustice. Efforts to explain about women are always affiliated with the universe, therefore,
conceptually, symbolically, and linguistically there is a connection between feminism and ecological
problems. The definition of women is always associated with physical and psychological problems.
Physically, women are human beings with one of the sexes who are characterized by having reproductive
organs in the form of ovaries, having eggs or ovaries, and having breasts that allow women to get
pregnant, give birth, and breastfeed. Meanwhile, when viewed from a psychological perspective, women
are defined as inherent feminine traits (Eti Nurhayati, 2014). From this definition, it can be concluded that
permepua is a woman who has a beauty appeal and has inherent maternal traits when reaching adulthood.
Women are the jewels of life. In every turn of his life, God always bestows beautiful gems that are
captivating. The soul in a woman becomes a biographical cup for her life, her mother, her children.
Women are like the pillars of the state and someone who influences the development of world
intelligence. Buddhism sees the figure of the mother as the gateway to human life. The instinct possessed
by permepuan must always be maintained so that it is always clean for the home of other souls. The
pearls inherent in women's bodies must also be maintained so that the source of life is also maintained.

Women always have dynamics as if they are an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The spread of
discussions that discuss issues in women is a norm when compared to problems that discuss men's issues.

This tendency arises because women's lives are always considered unique and different so that they are
always emphasized in all aspects of life. The struggle of women activists in achieving equality and justice
has been carried out for a long time but has not been able to raise their dignity so that they can be equal to
men. All speakers agreed with the question "are women very valuable?" asked by the researcher. They
think that women are like diamonds that if scratched a little, the price will definitely decrease but it is still
expensive and not everyone can get it. Those who are all women also added that being a woman is very
proud. They can freely express their feelings such as crying, angry, scared, and so on. These expressions
will be difficult for men to express because there is an assumption from society that men should not cry,
be angry, and be afraid.

2. Women’s Dual Role

The existence of globalization makes the job market more complex and has an impact on the better status
and employment opportunities for women. Although the participation rate of women in the workforce has
increased dramatically, it is still found that many women work in the informal sector. This is certainly
related to the dual role of women as a mother who is responsible for child and household affairs, as well
as her role as a female worker (Soelistiyono & Fei Chuan, 2023). The participation referred to here is not
only fighting for equal rights, but also voicing its function in the development of society in Indonesia.
Women's participation includes the role of tradition as well as the role of transition. The role of tradition
is the role of women as wives, mothers, children, and household managers. Meanwhile, the transitional
role is the role of women as workers, members of society, and development agents. The tendency of
women to become career women sometimes has many implications such as a decline in family ties, an
increase in the number of juvenile delinquency and so on. The number of women job seekers will
increase in various parts of the world. The unfair treatment inflicted on women will give birth to the
perception that women are born only to do a limited number of jobs with a lower employment status with
the same low reward. Based on the census in 1971, the role of foreign workers in development has shown
a gap in participation when compared to men. Women experience discrimination not only in the domestic
sector, but also in the public sector as well. Discrimination in the economic field can be observed from
the difference in wages given to male and female workers. Female workers usually receive smaller wages
or salaries than male workers. This gap is seen from several categories such as education level, working
hours, business fields, and experience in the world of work. The lower a woman's education, the lower the
salary she receives.

The low level of education will affect their position in the job and the amount of salary earned.the same
thing also happens in this type of business, women who do economic efforts equal to men get lower
incomes. The inequality between men and women in transitional roles is rooted in the sexual division of
labor in society, namely the role of women who take care of the household and the role of men who earn
a living. This sexual division of labor is clearly detrimental to women, they seem to confine women to a
subordinate position to men, so that the ideals and hopes of building women as equal partners with men in
all aspects will be difficult to realize. 47 out of 60 interviewees answered the question "What if women
should play dual roles as mothers and workers" with almost the same answer. They agreed that there was
nothing wrong if women performed the double role. They saw their mother who was also playing a
double role. They feel that there is no problem, but they help the family's economic condition. My father's
salary alone is considered insufficient to survive many people in the house. Working mothers are great
mothers because working while being a mother is a tiring hall, especially if mothers work outside the

home. However, there were as many as 13 speakers who did not agree if the empian played a double role.
They think that women should choose one of them. Become a mother or become a worker. They think
that earning a living is not the wife's job. When a woman is married, she leaves everything to her
husband. Wives must obey their husbands and be skillful in taking care of the house or children. Working
wives are considered to pay less attention to their children and family.

3. Family

In 1988 the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia defined the family as the smallest unit in the
community. This unit is led by the head of the family and the members in it are several people who are
greeted under one roof and the situation is interdependent with each other. This definition is also used in
learning modules in schools. In general, a family is also defined as a group of people under one roof who
have different roles. The father as the head of the family plays a role in fulfilling the family's livelihood,
the mother plays a role in taking care of the integrity of the household and family members, and the child
plays a role in helping the parents. It can be seen that the family is an inseparable unit. However, this
definition was used in the past and does not describe the current condition of the family. The family is the
smallest unit in society. Even though it is the smallest unit, the role of the family is very big for a cultured
nation and state. Family is an indicator of a person's success, whether it is success in terms of economy,
education, work, or others. The family is like the heart of society and the backbone that is able to support
the community so that it will become a solid and strong society in the future (Wahid et al., 2019). In order
to form the expected family, it is necessary to consider many things such as the quality of religion,
economic conditions, educational conditions, and the ability of parents to meet all household needs.
Relaxation that can damage the family life system in society has begun to appear. This relaxation can
certainly damage the existing social order in society. The family should be able to be the basis for success
in forming a civilized, good, ethical, and physically and spiritually healthy society.

The family plays an important role in the sustainability of education and the formation of children's
behavior in accordance with societal values and norms. The role of parents is also very influential in
family education because children aged 0 to 12 years still have to be guided and directed so that their
personalities grow in balance. Family education plays a very active role in shaping and equipping
children so that they are ready to develop in community life. In the family, education goes hand in hand
with the basis of moral awareness between children and parents. As the closest environment, the family
participates in the awareness, formation, and development of children's character. Through intensive
communication and interaction, character education is formed that takes place in various ways. Parents
can set an example such as reprimanding, asking questions, doing something, giving praise or input, and
being a model for their children to follow the good deeds done. The function of the family socially is to
create a safe, peaceful, happy and prosperous society that must be run by the smallest institution first such
as the family. In addition to social functions, the family also has seven functions that are continuously
related to the life of its successors, namely: 1.) biological function, 2.) affection function, 3.) socialization
function, 4.) educational function, 5.) recreational function, 6.) religious function, 7.) protection function.
These seven functions must be able to be carried out by the family in daily life. Some of the interviewees
agreed with the question "does your family have a great influence on your achievements, and does your
family fully support what you do?". They replied that their family was very supportive of what they
wanted and that greatly influenced the actions that would be taken. They think that children's
achievements must begin to be intensified in the family sphere first. Everything that children do must be

appreciated first and then evaluated. This will shape the child's personality to be more confident but still
careful with his actions will then bring many achievements from the outside. However, some other
speakers did not agree with the question. They think that it is the family that worsens the child's
condition. For example, during a parent's divorce, the child must hear his parents argue at all times and be
separated from one of them. Family support means nothing because all the decisive life of a child is the
child himself.

4. Education

The 1945 Constitution states that every citizen has the right to education and teaching. This shows that
there is a learning obligation that provides opportunities and requires learning to every child at least up to
the age of 13. According to Law Number 20 of 2003 Chapter 1 Paragraph 1, the definition of education is
a conscious and structured effort to create a learning atmosphere and learning process with the hope that
students can actively participate in developing their potential, have good and intelligent personalities,
have noble character, and have the skills that they and the community need (Rahayu Ninik, 2012). The
essence of education is the process of interaction between educators and students to achieve goals,
namely guiding students to master educational goals. This interaction can take place in the family, school,
or community environment. Judging from education and the way education enters society, it can be
concluded that education is a humanitarian and humane process. The emergence of the term humanity
means that we are talking about the traits that humans have. While humanization means a process of
shaping human beings to have a humane, mature, and complete spirit. The formation of character is the
orientation of education. Each level of education will be evaluated and monitored carefully so that it is
clear about a person's positive potential so that it can be developed even better. The point of this character
is how he thinks and the way he treats someone. Educational paths are the arena that students must go
through in order to develop themselves through a series of educator processes that are in line with
educational goals. Philip H. Cooms divides education into three parts, namely formal education or
education in schools, informal education or education outside schools that are not institutionalized, and
non-formal education or education outside institutions that are institutionalized (Wulandari, 2022). Here's
the description

a) Formal Education/Education in Schools

School education is education in schools that is organized, systematic, and tiered over a certain period of
time and lasts from kindergarten to higher education.

b) Institutionalized out-of-school education

Institutionalized out-of-school education is an overall form of education that is carried out deliberately,
obediently, structured, and planned outside of learning activities and its approach is more flexible. Here
are some prospective participants in out-of-school education 1.) school-age residents who have not or
have never had the opportunity to attend school, 2.) adults who are not or have not attended school, 3.)
students who do not continue their studies, 4.) Students who graduated in the education system but are
unable to continue to a higher level, 5.) and adults who have worked but still want to add other skills.

The level of education is a stage of education that continues to be sustainable. This level is determined
based on the level of student development, the level of difficulty of teaching materials, and the methods

used when teaching and learning. The level of education consists of primary education, secondary
education, and higher education which have the following definitions.

A. Primary education

Basic education is the lowest level of education and is mandatory for every citizen to follow. The reason
for the mandatory basic education for every citizen is so that they have provisions about basic knowledge,
basic values and attitudes, and also basic skills. The length of basic education is nine years.

B. Secondary education

Secondary education is education that is held to continue and expand basic education and also to prepare
students to become members of society who have the ability to have mutual relations with the
environment, social, and culture. The procurement of secondary education is also expected to develop
further abilities in the world of work or higher education. Secondary education consists of general
education, special education, official education, vocational education, and religious education.

C. Higher education

Higher education is a continuation of secondary education that has been held to prepare students to
become members of society with academic and professional abilities who can apply, develop and
contribute to the creation of science, tecology, and art.

The research, which has 60 resource persons, came from 30 resource persons who are or have pursued S1
higher education (category A) and 30 other resource persons who are or have taken their last education at
high school/vocational school equivalent or below (Category B). Category A resource persons argued that
higher education is very important. In addition to being self-interested, being educated will also change
people's views about their families. Those who pursue higher education will be considered as rich or
capable families even though currently many institutions or companies provide scholarships to those who
excel or are financially disadvantaged. Category A resource persons think that higher education will also
get a high salary in the workplace. In contrast to category B speakers, some of them actually also want to
pursue higher education but because of one or two things they postpone or even abort the desire and
choose to work. Some of them think that all levels of education have the same status in the world of work.
Those who are highly educated do not necessarily receive a larger salary than those with low education.
Category B resource persons think that a degree obtained from higher education does not help to have the
degree in the future because in the job what is needed is skill and effort, not a degree. Some of the
category B speakers also thought that why do women study higher education if later they will also be
confined to the house to take care of children and the kitchen.

5. Social Status

Social status comes from the Latin word "stare" which means to stand. Then the meaning of status is
equated with the term "position". A person's status is a position or position that he achieves in a group in
relation to other people or members of the community around him or her. In addition, social status is also
defined as the position of an individual that can be seen regardless of the individual. Social status is
objective that gives rights and obligations to a person who occupies the position. In order to be able to
measure the high or low social status of a person, it can be seen from the general public where they live

because social status cannot be separated from other individuals. It can be concluded that in daily life
sometimes we are not sensitive to the differences in social status that exist in society. They will
automatically put a person in a certain position based on the things that the local community upholds. All
speakers agreed that social status is indispensable in community life. They strive to continue to improve
their social status because they conclude that the higher a person's social status, the more benefits they
get.

DISCUSSION

This research uses the Nuture Theory popularized by Edward Wilson, a behaviorist who is also referred to
as the father of sociobiology. According to the nuture theory, there are differences in gender relations
between men and women that are not determined by biological factors but by the results of community
construction. The understanding of this theory gives rise to the assumption that social roles that have been
considered patented by the community and can be understood as the doctrine of religion are actually not
the will of God. Therefore, the values in gender bias that are widely expressed in patriarchal societies are
dominated by biological factors that are actually the construction of the local community. This theory
views the difference between men and women as the result of engineering socio-cultural constructions so
that they produce various roles, functions, and responsibilities that are different for each gender.
Sociological studies have given birth to the feminist movement which is a school or movement of women
that focuses on women's empowerment activities. This movement aims to equalize the position of women
with men, which is later known as women's emancipation.

Education continues to be closely related to changes in social status and people's attitudes or views on
life. The education that women weave has its own meaning in relation to the social status that they want
to achieve. The high and low level of women's education will affect their economic activities. Women
with higher education will mostly do economic activities or work outside the home compared to women
with low education. A person's position or position in society will affect how activities in an effort to
fulfill his or her life. This position will also affect the high and low level of the individual's pursuit of
knowledge. By acquiring knowledge through education, an individual and his family will get different
statuses in society. The community will provide opportunities and living facilities that are different from
others such as: life safety, smell standards; wealth or assets; and freedom of behavior. The factors behind
women playing a dual role in order to improve the social status of the family like Insufficient father's or
husband's parenting, Lazy family heads, The head of the deceased family, The head of the family is
seriously ill, Growing necessities of life, Expensive tuition fees, Basic needs have not been met and so on.

This situation is what forces women to inevitably have to work even though there are many women who
originally wanted to work. Those who are willing to work usually pursue a career while they are still
young so that later when they enter old age, they can feel a comfortable period of study. For women who
choose to play a dual role, they work not only for themselves, but to help and support their family's
economy. This can be seen that the work or activities carried out by women are not only living at home
but for their husbands, children, and even their families as well. Women who work are not only limited to
filling their free time but also improving their standard of living. The desire to help families in improving
the social status of women through educational efforts is not an easy thing. Women must be faced with
the patriarchy of society that looks at women with one eye. Patriarchal society generally views that
women do not need higher education, women do not need to work, women only need to stay at home and

obey their husbands or parents. This is evidenced by the fact that many women, especially those who are
heading towards adulthood, do not have access to equal positions which makes women hampered to form
new roles.

Not only activists who voice women's rights, the government also issues programs that can add insight
and human resources. This program is expected to educate the nation, especially for women. The
women's empowerment program is a government program that aims to improve the position of women as
partners on an equal footing with men in the eyes of the community. Women who are members of this
program are involved in the fields of politics, education, economics, and health. In the field of education,
the government complains about skills or skills that can help women find jobs that suit their midat. In
addition, the government also provides literacy schools for the illiterate and provides counseling about
agriculture. Education has been inherent in women in this era. Almost all women must have completed
their education at least up to junior high school. Education will certainly affect how he thinks and how his
family's social status is. Especially for people who live in rural areas who have a mindset that education
will not have an impact on their lives. The efforts made by women to meet their needs to increase their
social status are very diverse obtained from the mindset and the last level of education taken. Women
who complete their education up to the higher education level are more dominant and have the
opportunity to change the social status of their families. Education and work are one unit that underlies
the level of social status of the community. The higher the level of education that is completed, the more
respected a person will be. Education can lead people to more decent and better jobs. When a person
works in a good place with a high salary, his life will slowly increase. This large income is then used as a
reference to improve his family life such as vacationing to a good place, buying a new vehicle, buying a
house or other assets, buying branded goods, sending his younger siblings or children to prestigious
schools and so on. Currently, the community, especially women, continues to strive to take advantage of
education and work to improve family welfare.

It is increasingly understood that education is very important because education is a determinant of steps
towards the future such as livelihoods. The level of education will determine the type of job obtained. The
high level of education completed by women is one of the factors that cause them to choose to work as
well. The education they complete equips them with a variety of disciplines that will lead them to good
jobs. This is able to describe that the higher the level of education that women receive, the higher the
desire of women to work. This phenomenon is marked by an increasing number of women who are single
or even married to enter the world of work. The difference in the level of education that is completed will
bring about a reduction in the number of women workers. The low level of education certainly affects the
amount of education that will be received by workers. It also shows that education levels have a good
influence on an individual's decision to work. The high or low level of education is also an indicator of
the expensive or cheap time spent working. For women who are highly educated, they will choose to
work rather than just stay at home.

CONCLUSION
Half of the interviewees agreed that women's responsibilities and position in the family are crucial to
what women do today. In contrast to today, women are more developed, trained, and modern, allowing
them to fill roles such as biological mothers or childcare providers also contribute to the creation of
excellent jobs outside the home. But if women live at home and take care of the house, they will not be
able to make their own money, which is used as a measure of social status authority in society. Education

is expected to produce educators and leaders who conform to the standards of the general public for daily
life. People with advanced education are valued in the general public and do not gradually improve their
social status. Because the general public is sensitive to the rate at which people learn, it takes some time
for people to be treated as role models and treated at a higher level within the general population. The
purpose of this study is to find out the various roles that women play in order to achieve a higher family
social status.
Women's efforts to improve the social status of their families through education continue to be
closely related to changes in the social status of society and outlook on life. The education that women
have their own meaning depends on the social position they want to achieve. Women's education levels
affect economic performance. Women who are more educated are more likely to participate in economic
activities and work outside the home than women who are less educated. A person's status and position in
society affects how they influence their activities to fulfill their lives. This ranking also affects the
student's individual level of knowledge, whether high or low. Women's efforts to improve the social

whether high or low. The family's desire to improve women's social status through education is not an
easy matter. Patriarchal societies generally believe that women do not need to be highly educated, women
do not need to work, simply stay at home and obey husbands and parents. This is shown by the fact that
many women, especially those who are approaching adulthood, are still not able to occupy equal roles,
which hinders them from taking on new roles. Women's rights activists and the government launched
programs to improve information and human resources. This program aims to educate the community,
especially women.
The Women's Empowerment Program is a government program that aims to improve the status of
women as partners on an equal footing with men in the eyes of the community. In the field of education,
the government provides information on skills and abilities to help women find jobs that match their
interests. In addition, the government provides literacy schools for the illiterate and offers agricultural
advice. Education certainly affects the way of thinking and the social status of his family. Especially for
those who live in rural areas and believe that education has no impact on their lives. Women's efforts are
aimed at meeting their needs and improving their social status, which largely depends on their way of
thinking and their level of final education. Women with higher education are more dominant and have the
opportunity to change the social status of their families. Education and work are the basic units of the
social status of the community. The higher the education completed, the higher the prestige that a person
can enjoy. Education can lead people to more professional and better jobs.
If a person gets a good job with a good salary, his life will grow little by little. This high income
serves as a model to improve family life. For example, taking a vacation to a good place, buying a new
car, buying a house or other property, buying branded products, taking care of a younger sibling or child
at a respected school. As of today, people, especially women, continue to use education to improve family
welfare. The high education of women is also one of the reasons why women choose this profession. By
completing the training you get to know the different disciplines that lead to good work. This may explain
the fact that the more educated a woman is, the more she wants to work.
