1 Introduction
This BBI describes the chassis to body electrical interface. It deals with the fol-
lowing main areas;
– “Precautionary measures” in page 2
– “Relays for body functions - general requirements” in page 3
– “Electronic Control Units (ECUs)” in page 3
– “Body builder connectors, inputs and outputs” in page 6
– “Electrical distribution unit and fuse boxes” in page 13
– “Function description” in page 27
– “Lighting” in page 62
The ECU communicate via both a fast control link J1939 and a slower informa-
tion link J1708/1587. Control signals are transmitted on the fast link, and infor-
mation and diagnostic signals are transmitted on the slow link.
The data links are recognized as twisted pair conductors.

Type of link Colours

Information link J1708/1587 Gray/orange

Control link J1939-2-3 Green/yellow

Control link FMS-CAN Green/yellow

ATTENTION!
• BBIs may be updated without prior notice.
• Use the BBI on the BBI website.
• Information on models/versions no longer in production can be found
in Historical documents on the BBI website.
• Country-specific safety rules and guidelines have higher prefer-
ence over the manufacturer specification if there is regulatory
conflicts.

7.4.2 Start disable – diesel vehicle (engine hatch)

Figure 23

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Mandatory to use.

ATTENTION! Available on rear engine variants,
only.
“Start disable – engine hatch” inhibits engine starting from the driver’s cab.
“Start disable – engine hatch” activates an icon if the
parking brake is applied. If the parking brake is released, the
icon for open engine hatch, the STOP icon in BIC and a
sound is activated.
The engine cannot be started from the driver’s cab if the
engine hatch is open. However, the engine can be started from the engine
compartment if the parking brake is applied. If the engine hatch is opened
while the engine is running it will continue to run.
A fault code is set when the engine is started from the engine compartment if
engine hatch switch is not connected.

“Heat detector, body” activates the STOP icon in BIC, a sound

and the heat detector warning icon in BIC.

The function shall also activate the hazard warning lamps,

which in turn activate all direction indicators for every single-
deck, double-deck rigid or articulated vehicle of category M2 or M3 with
classes I, II and III in EU according to regulation.

“Heat detector, body” is used to input temperature information from heat

detectors in luggage compartments and auxiliary heater compartment, for
example. The indication in the instrument cluster is the same as when the heat
detectors in the engine compartment are activated.

7.6 Low priority loads, relay

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Mandatory to use.

Activation criteria 1
• engine not running.
<23.6 V
• a pre-set time of 30 minutes 12

has been reached (default 9 3

<30 min
parameter setting). rpm: 0
6

• A pre-set minimum voltage

level of 23.6 V has been
reached (default parameter
setting). Figure 25

Activation criteria 2
• engine running <25.4 V >30 sec

• a pre-set time of more than 30

seconds must have passed rpm: >0
(default parameter setting).
• battery voltage <25.4 V
(default parameter setting) Figure 26

Deactivation criteria
• Battery voltage exceeds <26.7 V >4 sec
26.7 V (default parameter set-
ting).
• Engine speed exceeds
1000 rpm for four seconds
(default parameter setting). Figure 27

Battery voltage is monitored by the BBM.

Connect the output via a relay to +30, to shut off low priority loads such as
fans, heaters and lamps, which are not a legal requirement, when the battery
voltage becomes too low. This is to ensure sufficient battery capacity for
starting the engine.
The pre-set time and voltage data can be changed at the pre-delivery
inspection (PDI).

7.11 Disconnection of AC compressor

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

ATTENTION!
“Disconnection of AC compressor” is used to switch off the AC compressor
(Denso) or to reduce power consumption (Volvo FK40) in situations where
the engine needs all available power for acceleration.
The Denso compressors are started up one at a time by the AC control system
when the signal disappears. The Volvo FK40 compressor runs up to full
power when the signal disappears.
ATTENTION! This signal must only be used for temporary disconnection
of the Denso compressors or for temporary disconnection of the FK
compressor reduction valve (if the compressor is equipped with a reduction
valve). The signal must not be used for temporary disconnection of the
Volvo FK compressor.

7.14 Alarm

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

“Alarm” activates the hazard lamps. Compare with XCB801F:14.
If the input is connected to ground, the “Hazard lamps” are switched on with
a continuous light. The lamp flashing frequency can be controlled by a pulsed
input signal.

7.15 Emergency switch

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Mandatory to use.

Under normal running conditions when the “Emergency switch” is not
engaged, output (CN2:2) is activated.
The output (XCB403:3) is activated and the output (CN2:2) is deactivated
when the “Emergency switch” is engaged.
The “Emergency switch” stops the engine, switches off the main relay,
activates the “Hazard warning lamps” (provided a relay is installed, see
figure below) and shuts the fuel cut-off valve.
The output can be used for activating security functions in the body, such as
opening the doors and switching on the emergency lamps.

7.16 Speed signal C6

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

Note Gives a signal of 4 pulses per metre.
ATTENTION! This function is only available for
buses equipped with a tachograph.
“Speed signal C6” is intended for the body builders who want to have the
information for the destination sign to change automatically. A pulse counter
or A/D converter is needed.
• High level gives an output voltage between 5.5 V and 8 V at 2 mA
load.
• Low level gives an output voltage below 2.5 V at 2 mA load.
If the vehicle constant K=4000 pulses/km the C6 and the C3 signal will be
the same.

7.17 Headlamps off

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Mandatory to use.

ATTENTION!
“Headlamps off” turns off the passing beam (dipped beam).

7.18 Prevent suspension control

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

“Prevent suspension control” blocks the ECS system so that neither level
control, raising, lowering nor kneeling can be done. Any level control,
raising, lowering or kneeling that has been initiated will be brought to an end.
Further control is blocked as long as the “Prevent suspension control” is
active. “Prevent suspension control” can be used with a boarding ramp and
may then be activated by a switch on the dashboard or a sensor at the ramp.

7.19 Kneeling position

Figure 40

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

The output is activated when the vehicle is kneeling.
More precisely, the output is activated when a certain solenoid valve in the
ECS system is closed. This solenoid valve is closed when kneeling front left
or front right is started. The output is active as long as kneeling continues.
When the vehicle has returned to normal level, the output turns low and the
solenoid valve is opened.
This kneeling indication works for kneeling types involving the left or right
side of the front axle. The indication does not work when the vehicle kneels
on both the left and right sides of the front axle together.
“Kneeling position” can be used to activate the bus hold brake when the bus
is kneeling. It can also be used to block door opening at a bus stop before the
vehicle is kneeling.

7.20 Full suspension dump

Figure 41

Function category (see section 7.1): Optional function. Optional to use.

When activating the “Full suspension dump” function, the compressed air in
the system is completely evacuated so that the suspension rests on the bump
stops. As the air is evacuated, an icon is lit in the Instrument Cluster.
The “Full suspension dump” function can be used when transporting chassis,
complete vehicles or when servicing or repairing complete vehicles, for
example.
The “Full suspension dump” function will terminate when;
• the ignition is switched off
• the lowering protection is activated
• either of the kneeling or levelling switches are activated
When the “Full suspension dump” function is terminated, the bus will return
to normal ride height or remain at the current level depending on the air
pressure in the system.
“Full suspension dump” is activated by means of a switch in the main
electrical distribution unit.

7.21 Hazard activation

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

The function activates all direction indicators.
“Hazard warning lamps” can be used for automatic warning when a ramp or
lift is in operation, for example. “The hazard warning lamps” can also be
activated with a switch instrument cluster.

ATTENTION! “Any door open” is safety related and is mandatory to use.

7.34 Speed signal X km/h

Function category (see section 7.1): Standard function. Optional to use.

The speed limit setting can be programmed with the Techtool after-market
tool. Two parameters are involved. The output is activated when the vehicle
reaches a speed specified by the DHO parameter. The output is de-activated
when the vehicle drops to a speed specified by the DHN parameter.
Pre-set speed limit:
• Standard 20 km/h
• Mexico 100 km/h
According to the European Bus & Coach Directive, ECE R107 and 2001/85/
EC, it must be possible to open the doors from the outside in case of an
accident. The driver is able to prevent the doors from being opened at speeds
above 20 km/ h. It is a legal requirement that it must be possible to override
the blocking request when the speed has exceeded 20 km/h and drops to
speeds below 20 km/h again.

8.7 Lighting – Light Control Module (SLCM) programming

The “Light Control Module (SLCM)” must be programmed for the lighting var-
iants specified. Programming is best carried out prior to delivery, by including
the desired variant strings in the production order. The “SLCM” can be repro-
grammed by using the Techtool or PROSIT tools.
When choosing variant strings in the variant tables in the following pages do as
follows. Select a variant from one of the following variant families:
• “Passing beam (dipped beam) headlamp” in page 75
• “Driving beam (main beam)” in page 77
• “Additional driving beam (main beam)” in page 78
• “Daytime running lamp (switched on when engine running)” in page 79
