This comic is dedicated to you
you.

You, the deviants*.

People who are “too much like this” or “not enough like that.”

You, who simply by existing, transgress established norms.

You, who thumb your nose at the dictates of “normality.”

There’s nothing in you that needs healing, nothing that needs to

change. Your role is not to fit into a mold, but rather, to help others
—all others—out of the molds they’ve been trapped in. You’re not
here to follow some pre-ordained path, but rather the opposite: to
make your own way in the world, and invite those around you to stray
from their well-trodden paths.

By embracing your truest self, making peace with your uniqueness,

you become an example to follow. You thus have the power to shatter
the normative shackles that hold us all back and keep us from living
together in mutual respect and acceptance.

Your difference isn’t part of the problem, it’s part of the solution.

It is a cure for our society, a society obsessed with normality.

– Julie Dachez

* In sociology, deviance refers to behavior that violates reigning social norms.

THANK YOU

First of all, thank you to Julie and Fabienne for suggesting this
exciting endeavor.
Thank you to Sophie and Guy for taking this journey with us.
Thank you to Raf, who held down the fort on mornings when I slept
late (or early) the last three months.
Thank you to Charlotte Gastaut, my first reader and a sharp eye,
without a doubt my Master Yoda who taught me the ways of the Force.
Thank you to Charly Cungi, who gathered all the little pieces of me yet
again and got me back on track just in time to finish this book.
And future thank you to Caro, who will have me on her hands for
2 or 3 months Bali for optimal recovery.
– Mademoiselle Caroline

I would like to give my warmest thanks to Fabienne, without whom this

book would never have seen the light of day. She was the one who read
my blog and reached out to me to make this comic. Fabienne, you were
a source of unflagging support, and saw this book wonderfully through
to fruition. Without you, I would never have embarked on this adventure.
A thousand thank yous!
I would also like to thank you, Caroline, the perfect artist: we couldn’t
have dreamed of better! Your sensitivity is a force unto itself. Because
of it, you were able to turn my script into images with such fidelity
and finesse. You knew how to take in my remarks—oh, how many
there were!—without ever losing your good humor. You are a ray of
sunshine—thank you!
And of course, my thanks to Sophie, our editor, who believed in this
project right from the start, and gave us carte blanche. Sophie, thank
you for your trust and your enthusiasm, I adored working with you!
Thank you, ladies: together, the four of us were one heck of a team.
– Julie Dachez

A thank you from the bottom of my heart to Julie, who, even though
she didn’t know me, agreed right away to my idea (very vague at the
time) of telling her life story in comic form. Massive thanks to Caroline,
who believed in this book from the start and used every ounce of
talent, creativity, patience, and humor to make my dream come true.
And what to say about Sophie from Éditions Delcourt, who gave us
such freedom? Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And last but not least, whatever I contributed to this book I dedicate
to my sons, Corentin and Armand, my two favorite aspies, constant
sources of inspiration and surprise. I wish them a good life in a world
that is more tolerant and open to difference.
– Fabienne Vaslet
Julie Dachez is a writer, author of La Différence Invisible and Dans
a Bulle! in France. She is also a blogger, a YouTuber, a teacher, a
researcher, a speaker, and an activist. She loves to play tennis and
eat chocolate, not necessarily in that order. Julie writes at home,
surrounded by her two dogs and her cat, Misti, who loves to take
part in the writing process by lying on the keyboard.

Mademoiselle Caroline was born in Paris a few years back. She’s the
author of several humorous and autobiographical albums including
Chute Libre and Carnets du Gouffre, a story about living with de-
pression that has attracted the attention of the media and read-
ers. In 2016, La Différence Invisible was first released in France.
Also: she skis a lot (with class and distinction), plays rugby (with
panache and severity), walks a lot (with courage and tenacity), and
cares for her three children of two different ages (c’est possible!).
Thanks for reading Invisible Differences—we hope you loved it!
