Experience1: 3 Rounds

Round 1: Given a file with numbe rs of 7 digits each, number 10 will be represented as 0000010.
But all numbers are of 7 digits. Sort these numbers.

Round 2:

1) Two poles each of length 15m are at distance d. A rope of length of 16m is tied from the top
one pole to the other. Distance between lowest point of rope and ground is 7m. Find distance d..

2) Sum 2 numbers represented as linked list.

Round 3:

1) Given a BST and a number s, find a path from root to leaf whose values sum to s. Find
shortest such path.

2) Given topleft and bottomright coordinates of two rectangles whose sides are parallel to axes.
Find whether these 2 rectangles are intersecting.

IITB: 4 Rounds

Round 1 : Given set of points ,print all possible rectangles that have sides parallel to axes.
Rest of the interview was on machine learning

Round 2 : Given an array of nodes of a tree in random order, print the pretty print of tree. Each
node in array contains node value and parent index. parent of root is 1.

Round 3:
1) Print and remove nth node from circular linked list till the list becomes empty
2) Min win required for 4 teams to qualify out of 8 teams if each team plays twice with each of the
other teams
Round 4:

@IITK:
Round 1: Problems on DS and algo (write code)
Round 2: Problems on DS and algo (harder problems, write code too)
Round 3: Some puzzles and harder problems than the previous rounds, they don’t expect
you to write code but are analysing how you approach the problems, asked about some
definitions from OS (virtual memory, semaphores, deadlock).
Round 4: I was called for round 4 (may be HR) but I already got 2 offers from better places,
so asked them to drop me.

ADOBE?

XEROX LABS
Heavy weightage to your projects. MTech project is asked in deep detail in all the
interviews. Basics of c++ as well as c. Moderate level algo questions. Did not require
coding. If you hach / publications, highlight them. Mostly their plan is to take 2 candidates
from each IIT. There were 3 rounds fve done any researor me, for my friend only 2. All the
rounds stress on project and research.
They will ask about courses that u have taken. They will prefer students having subjects
Machine learning, data mining related to analytics.
They will ask project in detail. If u tell them about ML, then surely some algorithm they can
ask like decision tree, bayesian, K means , SVM. They asked Bayes theorem. Mainly they
will ask about ur project.
IITG:
Addition to the above:
1. find median in an unsorted array without using sorting.
http://discuss.codechef.com/questions/1489/findmedianinanunsortedarraywithoutsorti
ngit
2. sort linklist.
**Write java/other advanced languages in ur CV only if u have a good understanding on
those as they ask questions from them.

@IITK (For Budding Scientist profile)

Round 1: Kind of a rapid fire round with hard problems on DS, algorithms and
mathematics. I was expected to write code for the DSalgo problems.
Round 2: Kind of an HR round, asked me about my research interests and whether I would
be interested in working on theoretical problems that are a bit different from my present
interests.
Got an offer. They told me they are only hiring 45 people for this post across the nation. I
guess only I got the offer here.
(For Research Engineer)
Similar to what is written on the first paragraph, my friends who got this offer had 3 rounds.
They offered to two candidates.

Round 1: Two algo problems and you have to write their code also.
Eliminated 70% of the total shortlisted candidates after that
Round 2: Problems on Linked list only, the more you solve, the more problems they will ask
Didn’t call for anyone (except me, maybe) after the round.

All the panels start interviewing candidates at the same time and ask the same set of
problems.
Round 3: I guess this one was an HR one, I got a better offer already so declined to
interview.
They offered to none.

Only one question.

How will you model flight details and use it for returning flight information against a query from
user? (Similar to yatra.com or makemytrip.com.)
What are parameters that will be used to rank the results after flight query?
How would the interface look like?

WAS THERE ANY HR TOO?

Yes.

@IITK:
Round 1: Talked to a technical guy for 10 minutes, asked me about my internship project
Round 2: Around 20 minutes with an HR, questions like why EPIC, etc?
Then got the offer.
Total offers: 10, I refused and I think 2 more refused (although I am not sure) How many
Shortlisted for interview?

3 Rounds : Around 40 min each

(Questions for me were more focussed towards Design) > What about others? (They
also asked a lot of DP questions.)

3. Given a grid where you are at one position and rat is at another position. You Can go from one
node to another if there is a door between them otherwise not. You have to find a path to go from
rat to cheese and return the path

4. Local Maxima: a no greater than all of its neighbors

Given an unordered array, find one local maxima. How much time it will take minimum ?? Can it
be less than O(N). If yes then how and if no then why not ?

5. Given a square where you have characters at every grid. From current point you can go one
step up down right, or left.
Given a string, how many times that string occurred in the grid ? Time n Space complexity ??

Please post some more interview experiences

Goldman Sachs (Strategies Division)
3 Rounds ( Could be more if they are uncertain. )
Round 1 : (40 minutes)
2 questions on probability and finding expectation value. (Medium and medium hard).
2 questions on database design.
Write a program to print power set of a given set.

Round 2 : (90 minutes)

Completely Open Ended.
I had never seen such kind of questions.
They gave me scenarios (finance based), and I had to use data mining concepts to come up
with a solution. ( By the end of my interview I had used clustering, decision tree, classification,
bayesian probability theory and what not!)
Write a program to calculate square root. (Newton’s method)

Round 3 : (40 minutes)

A puzzle whose solution was fibonacci. (I don’t know how to draw the question.)
Find nth fibonacci. (I gave them matrix exponentiation approach.)

Then one more interviewer joined, he was from US.

He asked whether I knew what Design patterns are? (You can read Design Patterns, Gang of
Four)
He asked me to write a function class and an algorithm class. Then he asked me to write a third
class (having function and algorithm object this technique is called composition) which could
dynamically assign function and algorithm and then use that algorithm in the assigned function
using object of the third Class.

(After third round, they gave me the offer.)

Tips : They asked questions based on my research area (which is data mining) and resume. So
be prepared on that. Also, they were framing questions on the fly, based on how you answer
them. So for my interview, there was nothing I could have prepared beforehand.

Any other GOLDMAN SACHS Interviewee ?

Round1: Write Code for Quicksort
Write pseudocode for finding partial ordering in DAG

Goldman Sachs (Set 2)

1. Questions on project that i’m doing and some design pattern related questions.
2. Questions on why c vs why c++ ? interfaces vs abstract classes.
3. Fibonacci Series ? No of function calls done for fibonacci recursive. Tighter bound. Then rate
of growth of fibonacci function ?
4. Given m*n rectangle, you want to play a game with one more person you break the rectangle
and give one to other he breaks it and gives it to you and so on. This goes on. You are the
starting person. How would you play so that you will be the last person and giving only 1 block to
other person.
5. Standard Probability and mathematical questions. (Expectation etc)
