Teaching and In this module we use an active and participative learning approach; in
Learning Methods / other words, students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own
Modes of Delivery learning and to develop independence in their approaches to studying.

Lectures: These provide a holistic approach to provide a broader view of

the topic. The lectures focus on key theories and models and on their
application in group and organisational settings.

Tutorials/Workshops: This is the platform where active and participative

learning approaches are used in tutorials seminars to explore concepts in
detail, to demonstrate theory in action and to provide structured
opportunities for skills development. Workshops, discussions, Role Plays
and participative exercises will be carried out in these sessions.

Virtual Learning Environment/Simulations: Our lecturers may use Villa

College Virtual Learning Environment for additional interactions. This may
include video conferencing and use of interactive online resources such as
simulations.
Parts of the module materials are available at the Learning Management
System (Moodle). This is also used as a platform to engage in discussions
and share learning.

Module Description
Electricity and Magnetism module covers the fundamentals of Electrical circuits and Magnetism
topics. It provides the required basic engineering knowledge in system of units, Resistance color
coding, Ohms and Kirchhoff’s laws and methods of solving series parallel circuits. Vital theorems
such as Thevenin, Norton, Maximum power transfer, Superposition, Reciprocity are covered.
Inductors and capacitors are incorporated in the syllabus. The fundamentals of the alternating
current topics such as AC waveform, RL, RC and RLC circuits, AC theorems and Resonance circuits
are covered in the syllabus. Finally, the key topics in three phase star and delta system are also
incorporated.
Expected Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

 Comprehend and apply appropriate techniques to solve the dc series parallel circuits
 Analyze and apply appropriate theorems to solve the direct current networks
 Estimate the energy stored in the inductor and capacitor circuits
 Analyze and apply appropriate theorems to solve the alternate current RL, RC and RLC
networks and able to estimate series and parallel resonance
 Analyze and apply appropriate methods to solve the three-phase star and delta system
