Grooming and Deportment Defined

Grooming –
Is all about being smart, neat or tidy, looking your best every
time.
Defined as the care of one’s personal appearance and
hygiene (Robert W. Chanters)

Deportment- behaviour or manner, how one stands, walks,


speaks and laughs in formal settings.
Dressing

Dressing is not all about outfits but has everything to do with


accessories, hairdo, haircare, make up, deodorant application and so
on.
Tips on Dressing!!!!
 Dress how you want to be addressed.
 Know yourself -body structure and skin tone-
 Plan your wardrobe
 Dress appropriate for different events/occasions
 Don’t be a fashion slave
Dressing
 Clothes should be clean and in good repair.
 Wear clothes that fit, not too tight and not too big.
 When attending functions ,woman outfits should not outshine other
guests, particularly those of the host or guest of honour.
 Choose colours that do not speak louder than you.
Woman should wear shoes that they can be graceful in.
Ladies don’t wear revealing clothing, let others see your skills and not
your private parts,
Vents should be kept small

Wash the body everyday


Wash and change
undergarments every day.
Shave
Use moisturizing cream and
body lotion to prevent skin
dryness
Brush your teeth and tongue
after every meal.
Drink lots of water and eat right,
dry mouth smells.
Apply deodorants

Feet
Scrubbing and drying them thoroughly especially in
between the toes before wearing shoes to minimize
odour.
Sprinkled foot powder between the toes.
Change socks everyday.
Never remove shoes in public.

(Circular No. 10 of 2006)


Reason for Circular
PSC noted with concern the deteriorating standards of dress by
members of the public service.

Standard of dress

• Members on duty are expected to maintain a high standard of dress


(WHY?) in order to keep respect of the general public and uphold
dignity and formality expected of them.

• The PSC has through Circular No. 10 of 2006 directed the following
standards of dress for employees.
Men
• Tie and collar
• Suits
• Tailored Safari Suits
• Sports Jackets (or blazers)
AT FORMAL OCCASIONS (Invited to represent PSC)
• Suits with tie and collar.
• Normal standards of dress may be departed from
when public servants are working in rural areas or
when duties require different considerations.
• Men are advised to keep jackets in offices – for
unexpected meetings and formal occasions.
Worst Dress For Men

Vest showing through the shirt.


Food stains on tie.
Too long or too short tie.
Short sleeved shirt under jacket.
Top button of shirt undone when worn with tie.
Thin end of tie showing.
Jackets sleeves too long or short.
Women

Ladies fashion is complex but they should put on


correspondingly high standards of dress.
The following items are not acceptable when one
is reporting for work;
Jeans
Mini skirts
Sleeveless dresses or blouses
Strapped dresses or blouses
Tops that have low necklines
See through garments
Footwear

Both men and women are not expected to turn up for work
putting on tennis shoes or tackies.

As for men, open sandals should only be worn for medical


reasons (HODs to request for medical certif ic ates of the
affected members).

DEPORTMENT

• It is about your posture


• How one carries herself/himself
• It is also about how one performs or behaves in a specific situation.
• Good deportment and body language can say much about you.
• Knowing how to walk and move helps to make you look good and feel
good, no matter what size, shape or height you are
CONDUCT
(a) Facial Expression
A genuine friendly smile is splendid.

(b)Your Carriage
An erect, well balanced, controlled posture creates the impression
of a confident and healthy person. Your confidence will inspire
the people with whom you deal with. Never droop over your
desk.
(c) Your Voice
Always make sure that your voice is controlled. Be careful that
your voice does not contradict the words you say.

(d) Word Choice


Choose simple words to avoid misunderstanding. What you
say and how you say it depicts the type of organization you
work for.

(e) Mannerisms

Avoid head scratching, ear pulling, finger snapping, humming, as


these indicate lack of confidence and are often annoying to
watch.

Bite the whole bread roll into your mouth
Race through a meal
Blow on your food or drink to cool it

sauce-when entertaining a client
