Module No. 12
Developing Your Character and Integrity

In this module, a list of good character traits that are related to the DYCIan Core
Values will be explained to encourage the DYCIans to commit to self-improvement through
the continuous building of their character and integrity.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. Identify which among the given good character traits are one’s strengths or
weaknesses
2. Cite personal examples of manifesting a given character trait
3. Evaluate one’s level in manifesting each given character trait

LIST OF 20 GOOD CHARACTER TRAITS

1. Integrity is conducting your life with strong moral principles and core values as your guide.
Whether or not people are watching you, you stick to it.

2. Honesty is living the truth. It is being straightforward and trustworthy in all of your interactions,
thoughts, and relationships that include your own self .

3. Loyalty is being faithful and devoted to your loved ones, your friends and anyone with whom
you have a trusted relationship.

4. Respectfulness is treating yourself and others with courtesy, kindness, and dignity. Basic
respect is the active belief in the worth of all people and the acceptance of our inherent flaws.

5. Responsibility is accepting personal, career and societal obligations even when they are
difficult or uncomfortable. It’s holding yourself accountable for your behavior and choices.

6. Humility is being confident while having a modest opinion of your own self-importance.
You have a growth mindset and gratitude for what you have rather than complaints.

7. Compassion is feeling deep sympathy for the suffering and misfortune of others while hoping
and working to alleviate their pain.

8. Fairness is striving to make decisions and take actions based on your compassion, integrity
and discernment of what the best outcome for all involved.
9. Forgiveness is making conscious and intentional decisions to let go of resentment and anger
toward someone for an offense whether or not they ask for it. Forgiveness extends to others
and to one’s self.
10. Authenticity is being your real and true self, without pretension or insincerity. It is being able
to show appropriate vulnerability and self-awareness.
11. Courageousness is the mental fortitude to carry on with a commitment, plan or decision you
believe is right in spite of fear, danger or pain.
12. Generosity is offering your time, efforts or assets freely and joyously without the expectation
of something in return.
13. Perseverance is steadfast persistent and determination to continue on with the course of
action, belief or purpose, despite any difficulty, in order to reach a higher goal.
14. Politeness is knowing and applying the basic good manners, common courtesies, and
etiquette to all people you encounter. It enhances your relationships and self-esteem.
15. Kindness is being considerate, helpful and benevolent to others. It comes from a positive
disposition and the desire for a warm and pleasant interactions.
16. Lovingness is showing those you love through your words, actions and expressions how
deeply you care about them. It includes being open and vulnerable.
17. Optimism is having a sense of hopefulness and confidence about the future. It’s a positive
mental attitude that interprets people and situations in a promising light.
18. Reliability is doing what you say you will do. It’s following through on your commitments,
actions and decisions.
19. Conscientiousness is the desire to do things well or to do the best of your ability. You are
thorough, careful, and organized in your efforts based on your own principles.
20. Self-discipline is overcoming your desires or feelings in order to follow what you believe is
right or to rise to your commitments. It comes with good habits, willpower and self-control
in order to reach a desired goal.

Question to ponder: Among the given character traits, which do you consider
as your strengths and weaknesses?

Time for Sharing Personal Experiences

Choose at least three among the list of character traits and recall the time that you have
practiced or demonstrated such character traits.

On Character Building. Your values define who you are, your actions, and your
relationships, so you are encouraged to build good character traits. Character-building
doesn’t happen overnight for it requires self-awareness and determination. The following are
some things that might help you as you strive for self-improvement. First, you have to define
what your core values are or what you consider as the most important for you because these
will be the foundation for your priorities, choices and behavior. Then you have to practice
them and try to be consistent in applying them in your life. Also, surround yourself with
people who reflect the character traits you want to embrace. They will inspire you to become
better. You should expect the best of yourself. Create high standards for yourself. Keep going
despite the setbacks and occasional failures. Every stretch builds your confidence. Commit
to self-improvement!
