Bus Bar Calculation For 4000a, 65ka

The document outlines the bus bar design calculations for a 4000A, 65kA bus duct for InPhase Power Technologies, detailing parameters such as fault levels, temperature rise, and material specifications. It includes calculations for short circuit effects, thermal ratings, and derating factors, concluding that the designed bus bar is suitable for a connected load of 3150A and a fault level of 65kA for 1 second. The final assessment confirms that the maximum temperature rise is within safe limits, validating the design's adequacy.

BUS BAR DESIGN CALCULATION FOR 4000A, 65KA BUS DUCT

BUS BAR DESIGN PARAMETERS:-

Fault Level of Bus duct 65kA For 1Sec.
Temperature Rise allowed 35oC
Site Ambient Temperature 50°C
Max.Temperature Permitted 85°C
Permissible Temp of Busbar During Short Circuit for 1 Sec 185-190ºC
Bus Bar Material Electrolytic Grade AL.E91E
Selected Aluminum Bus Bar Size 2x3x150x6(5400) Sq. mm./Ph
Enclosure Size 350x800mm
Connected Load 3150A
Safety Factor 3150x1.2=3780A

Ref: Industrial Power Engineering and application Handbook (as applicable for IEC,ANSI,NEMA,ISO and IS)

A. SHORT CIRCUIT EFFECTS :

Minimum size of conductor for a required fault level 65KA for 1 Sec.
Total area of Cross Section :
( Ref: Industrial Power Engineering and application
Handbook Chepter No.28, Page No. 865 and Figure No. 28.1)
Øt = (k/100) . (Isc/A) 2 . (1+ α 20 . Ø) . t
Where:-
Øt= temperature rise (in º C)
Isc= symmetrical fault current in r.m.s ( in Amps )
A= cross-sectional area of conductor ( in mm 2 )
α20= temperature coefficient of resistence at 20ºC/ºC, which as in Table 30.1 (0.00363 for Al. alloys)
Ø= operating temperature of the conductor at which the fault occurs ( in ºC )
k= 1.166 for Aluminium
t= duration of fault ( in seconds )

Final temperature allowed for busbar after short circuit is 190 ºC

By putting all values in the above equation.

Example 28.2
2
100 = (1.166/100) x ( 65000/A) x (1+ 0.00363 x 85) x 1
A= 812 mm² for Aluminium
812mm² Minimum size of conductor for a required fault level 65KA for 1 Sec.

B. THERMAL RATING:
DERATING FACTOR ON ACCOUNT OF HIGHER AMBIENT
TEMPERATURE Or RESTRICTED TEMPERATURE RISE
( Ref: Industrial Power Engineering and application Handbook Cheptor No. 28,
Figure No.28.7, Table No.28.3 and Page No. 870/871)

Derationg Factor at operating temperature 85 ºC (k1) = 0.815

C. DERATING DUE TO ENCLOSURE (k2)

Cross sectional area of busbar 3X2x3X150X6X100

=5.7%
Cross sectional area of enclosure 350X800

( Ref: Industrial Power Engineering and application Handbook Table No.28.6 and Page No. 874)

0.85 if ratio is less than 1%

0.81 if ratio is less than 2%
0.79 if ratio is less than 3%
0.77 if ratio is less than 4%
0.75 if ratio is less than 5%
→ 0.73 if ratio is less than 6%

Derating due to enclosure = k2= 0.73

D. THERMAL RATING OF THE CONDUCTOR

Total derating = k1xk2

=0.815x0.73
=0.59

Page 1 of 2
AC Current rating for 3bars of Al. Flats 150x6mm considered = 3975A
Therefore Current rating for Two pair 3bars of Al. Flats 150x6mm considered = 3975A x 2=7950Amp.

( Ref: Industrial Power Engineering and application

Handbook Page no. 921 and Table No.30.5) Back Calculation will be applicable

Therefore Aluminum Busbar Rating = 7950x0.59 = 4690Amp.

Therefore busbar and its arrangement is suitable for Connected load 3150A and a fault level of 65kA for 1 sec.

E. TEMPERATURE RISE CALCULATION of Conductors: -

Max. Temperature at full Load condition: -

i.e. When 3150Amp. Flows through steady state temperature of 35 ˙ C.

T max = Ambient + (Full Load Current/Actual Current carring)² X Allow T rise

50 + (3150Amp. / 4690Amp.)ª x35 =65˙ C which is within the limit of 85˙ C [50+35].

Summary: Hence the designed bus bar for BUS DUCT is OK & within the safe limit.
