Doing the Right Thing (by Prithve, 6.

4)

Tom’s eyes lingered on the photograph, his fingers tracing the edges as a wave of
nostalgia washed over him. The picture captured a golden moment—smiling faces,
gleaming medals, and the triumphant cheers of an unforgettable annual sports day. Among
them stood Tom, his gold medal reflecting the afternoon sun like a beacon of victory.

As he ran his fingers over the image, memories surged back like a tidal wave.

"3...2...1... Go!"

The air buzzed with excitement as Tom sprang forward, his heart pounding like a
drum. He had trained for this day, pushing himself to the limit. The other runners were hot
on his heels, their footsteps echoing against the track. Every muscle in his body screamed
for rest, but he refused to back down.

Halfway through the race, Tom found himself trailing behind the leader, sweat
dripping down his temples. He dug deep, his legs burning with effort. Just as he was about
to close the gap, fate played its hand. The runner ahead of him stumbled over a loose rock
and crashed to the ground, pain etched across his face.

A golden opportunity lay before Tom—victory was within his grasp. The finish line
was just a few strides away. For a split second, he hesitated. His mind raced back to last
year’s competition, where luck had not been on his side. He had vowed to win this time, to
taste the sweet fruit of success.

But then, a voice echoed in his head—"Honesty is the best policy." His teacher’s
words rang loud and clear. Taking a deep breath, Tom skidded to a stop and reached out a
hand.

"Come on, let’s finish this together," he said, pulling his opponent to his feet.

The crowd watched in stunned silence as the two boys, side by side, crossed the
finish line. A beat later, a thunderous applause erupted. They had not just won the race—
they had won hearts.

That evening, as Tom held his medal, he realized it was nott just about winning. It
was about the journey, the choices we make, and the kind of person we choose to be.

Looking at the photograph now, Tom smiled. The real victory was not in standing on
the podium—it was in standing by someone when they needed him the most.
