“Finding My Voice”

By: Maitlynn Morrow

I had no idea how impactful these vocal techniques classes would be

for my acting career. My initial reaction was, "This is weird—moaning and

tremors?" However, each lesson, from the first day of learning about

alignment to the readings on how emotional state, vocal cord science, and

tips for overall vocal health affect the voice, has proven invaluable. Each

point is so vital, and I can't wait to dive deeper into them.

What resonated with me the most was finding alignment (Prof. Jenifer

Morris). Achieving total alignment in the body has been a game-changer for

me. I can’t watch a movie without noticing the actor's alignment (or lack

thereof), and I’m now constantly more aware of my own body. Since learning

about alignment, I've never felt so connected to and aware of my body.

Because of the alignment exercises in class, I feel more confident stepping

into a room, knowing my body and I can work together harmoniously. This

newfound alignment has also made me feel very grounded.

A profound connection I made was with a reading that stated, "The

speaker's creativity is restricted most often, it turns out, by a nagging habit.

Their voice has inevitably become less flexible. Natural personality has been

masked by one or a series of alien habits. Gradually these habits, which we

take to be natural, enslave us." (pg. 22 Vocal Habits) This was a huge
epiphany for me. I realized I needed to find my true voice, as I had allowed

multiple people, opinions, emotions, and hurtful words to shape how I spoke.

I wanted to reclaim my voice.

Another major realization was the importance of breath work. One of

the key lessons from class was how letting the breath drop in can be

transformative. (Prof. Jenifer Morris) For example, before starting my

monologue, allowing the breath to drop in improved my articulation, slowed

me down, and let my words flow naturally. The readings also emphasized

how breath work can help with emotional states and stability.(pg.54-55,

Breath) Applying these techniques to my dance class has led to significant

improvement.

At the start of this class, Professor Morris told me, “Don’t be afraid to

let your voice be heard and fill the room. I want your voice to be heard.” I

had no idea how much I would improve. Now, I walk differently with better

alignment, talk differently by letting the breath flow through my body, and

act differently by embracing these techniques. These changes have greatly

increased my confidence. I feel I can walk into a room with confidence, using

my alignment and the "see-feel" technique (Prof. Jenifer Morris) to connect

with my body when needed. I am grateful to have developed a routine to

maintain this progress. The person who started this class is not the same one

who is finishing it. I know that this work will continue to help me throughout
my career. This is really the foundation for any actor. I'm very grateful that I

can now apply these things to my work.
