following questions.
The fast pace of modern day family life can make it easy to forget that simply just spending
time with our children is really important. Our time is one of the greatest things we can give them.
There are some reasons why you should make quality time a priority:
Firstly, spending time together builds children’s self-esteem. Children who spend time with
their parents participating in activities together build a positive sense of self-worth. When children
feel that they are valued by their parents, they feel more positive about themselves. Family activities
don’t have to be expensive trips out to be meaningful, the important part is just being together. You
could go for a bike ride or play a game together.
Families who share everyday activities together form strong, emotional bonds. Studies have
found that families who enjoy group activities together share a stronger emotional bond as well as
an ability to adapt well to situations as a family. You could share your favourite hobbies, sports,
books, movies or other favourite activities.
When you spend time with your children, you are developing an environment for open
communication. Good communication is important for your children to feel comfortable with talking
about anything. Asking how their day has gone can make a big difference.

Children learn by example. If you are setting a good example for them by spending quality
time together, they are more likely to adopt those behaviours in other relationships in their lives.
Simple things like playing games together will help them understand more about interacting with
others as well as teach them things like sharing and kindness.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions.
Children who help out around the house with family chores will grow as a person.
Confidence can improve as your children learn and use their abilities to achieve a chore goal.
Additionally, children can learn to feel proud of their work when they are reminded that their chores
help everyone in the family. Working around the house and tackling new chores also teaches
children life skills that will help them stay on task and be productive for the rest of their lives.
When children take part in the family chore load, there are benefits for everyone. If chores
are divided equally, there will be more time for parents and children to spend time together once
everyone’s tasks are completed. Structure and routine can also help parents build their child’s self-
control and, in turn, reduces power struggles with parents. Children will begin feeling more
successful and confident as they master new chores, and everyone will feel proud of the work that’s
done.
It’s important to keep a few things in mind when assigning chores to your kids. First and
foremost, keep chores age and developmentally appropriate and be specific with instructions when
working with younger children. Consistency and patience helps children take on new chore
responsibilities, so stick with the family plan!
Chores benefit children and parents alike. They are an important way for you to help children
feel like they are contributing members of the family household. This, in turn, helps them to learn a
sense of belonging and the value of being a contributing member of a group. This value can grow as
they do. So, whether through a school project, neighbourhood clean-up, showing up to soccer
practice on time, or serving lunch at the local soup kitchen, all of us benefit from children taking part
in chores.

When your child was younger, your role was to lay the foundations for his behaviour. For example,
you probably showed your child how to cooperate and take turns with others. Now your child is in
his teens, he can start taking responsibility for his own behaviour. But you're still an important role
model.
What you do shows your child how you want her to behave. For example, how you cope with
feelings like frustration and distress influences how your child regulates her emotions. What you eat,
how much you exercise, and how you look after yourself all influence your child. What you say is

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 9

also important. You can help your child to manage and control his behaviour by talking about how
behaviour affects other people. You can also talk more with your child about the differences
between right and wrong. Now's a good time for this because your child is developing his ability to
understand other people's experiences and feelings.
You might think that your child's peers and friends have a stronger influence in the teenage years
than you do. Friends and peers do influence your child, but so do you - it's just that peer influence is
different from your influence. Your child’s friends are more likely to influence everyday behaviour,
like the music your child listens to or the clothes he wears. As a parent, you influence your child’s
basic values, like religious values, and issues related to her future, like
educational choices. And the stronger your relationship with your child, the more influence you’ll
have. That's because your child values your good opinion, advice and support. In fact, it’s likely that
when your child becomes a young adult, he’ll end up with values, beliefs and behaviour that are
similar to yours.

Family Life in the United States
Family life in the United States is changing. Thirty or forty years ago, the wife was called a
"housewife". She cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the money for the
family. He was usually out working all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much
housework. And he did not see the children very much, except on weekends.
These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the
children all day. They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening
cooking dinner and cleaning up. They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So
who is going to do the housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?
Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and
wife agree to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 10

husband always cooks dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some
nights and the husband cooks dinner on other nights.
Then there is a question of the children. In the past, many Families got help with child care from
grandparents. Noe families usually do not live near their relatives. The grandparents often are to far
away to help in a regular way.
More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysister or a day-care center.
The problem with this kind of help is the high cost. It is possible only for couples with jobs that pay
well.
Parents may get another kind of help from the companies they work for. Many companies now
let people with children work part-time. That way, parents can spend more time with their children.
Some husbands may even stop working for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a
new word: They are called "househusband". In the United States more and more men are becoming
househusband every year.
These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their
children better, and the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also
find changes in their marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

Many people go through life only thinking about their own well-being and that of those
around them. In reality, the well-being of the environment is just as important in certain ways.
Without a healthy and sustainable environment, their own health and ability to leave behind a
sustainable planet to those who live after them is negatively affected. Therefore, two main
environmental benefits can be realised with greener living.

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 14

Firstly, people can conserve natural resources. The natural resources that man has been
enjoying are beginning to disappear. Due to population growth, it is estimated that the use of natural
resources has more than tripled since 1970. At that rate, it is not difficult to see how these same
resources will eventually become depleted. It is important to conserve those precious resources so
that others after this generation can enjoy the same quality of living on this planet.
Secondly, people can reduce the harmful effects of climate change. Primarily due to human’s
reliance on fossil fuels over the years, climate change is a real concern. People continue to release
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, further polluting the air. This is leading to dramatic changes in
temperatures that need to be stopped. Greener living aims to do exactly that. For every person who
makes an effort to reduce his or her carbon footprint in the world, climate change can begin to
become less of a concern over time.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
In a statistical report released by WHO, around 13 million deaths happen each year due to
environmental issues. To make it worse, multiple diseases are a result of surviving in a low-quality
environment. Lung diseases, asthma, stroke, issues in the heart are some of the examples. Green
living such as making environment-friendly and sustainable food choices, energy conservation can
help reduce pollution to some extent.
Firstly, the consumption of healthier foods can contribute to reducing pollution. People can
start by consuming eco-friendly foods by buying from local farmers, buying organic and seasonal
foods, etc. They are made of fewer pesticides that go into human bodies. Too much exposure to
pesticides harms the natural hormones present in the human body and as a result, people face many
health issues like lack of immunity, hormonal changes and also cancer.
Secondly, through energy conservation, people are saving both natural resources as well as
money. The light bulbs and other electrical appliances that are available in the market produce 2.3

Plastic takes hundreds of years to degrade, and even then, it is not fully decomposed, it remains in
the environment in the form of microplastics. These tiny particles that can measure just a few
nanometres are becoming more concentrated in our environment. Recent studies have shown that
there is now 60 times more microplastic in the ocean than there was just 15 years ago. This presents
a significant threat to human health as microplastics have been linked with cancer, reduced fertility,
psychological illnesses, and birth defects. Plastics often contain a myriad of toxic chemicals that
include neurotoxins, carcinogens, and endocrine disrupters.
A new technique was recently developed by researchers at Arizona State University that allows
scientists to detect the presence of microplastics in human tissue. The results were alarming. The
team showed that microplastics were detectable in 100% of the tissues sampled. This is concerning
as it shows that microplastics are entering the human body and likely accumulating there, where, in
greater quantities, they are more likely to cause harm.
Studies have shown that microplastics easily enter the food chain and accumulate in the food we
eat, such as fish and shellfish. When we ingest seafood we are also ingesting large amounts of
microplastics. Unless plastic pollution is addressed, this problem will likely worsen, with greater
amounts of plastic waste ending up in the ocean each year. This may lead to an increase in the
prevalence of diseases and illnesses linked with microplastic exposure.

A. Microplastics enter the food chain.
B. We eat seafood such as fish and shellfish.
C. Microplastics accumulate in the food we eat.

Question 33. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. There are more and more microplastics in our environment.
B. Toxic chemicals such as neurotoxins, carcinogens, and endocrine disrupters can be found in
plastics.
C. The researchers at Arizona State University showed that microplastics were detectable in
most of the tissues sampled.
D. Greater amounts of plastic waste in the ocean may lead to an increase in diseases and
illnesses.Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following

Firstly, recycling conserves natural resources, reduces pollution and saves energy. Recycling
involves sorting and cleaning up trash to produce “secondary materials” - mainly glass, paper,
metaland plastic-for reuse in products. Recycled aluminium, for example, is a particularly valuable
resource; manufacturing using recycled aluminium is 92% more efficient than when unused raw
materials are used, according to the Aluminum Association. About 40% of the country’s aluminium
supply comes from recycling, but people are still throwing away nearly $1 billion worth of
aluminium cans that could have been recycled every year.
Secondly, people should pay attention to plastic bags. They take hundreds of years to break
down and cause a particular threat to wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of marine mammals die every
year after mistaking plastic bags as food. Many animals get trapped in plastic bags and die.
Therefore, people can decline the number of them when they bring their own bags. Use and reuse
all those bags - paper, plastic, cloth - whether or not they are designed to be “reusable.” If they
become too old to carry new purchases, use them to pick up litter. And, finally, dispose of them
properly - recycle them if you can.

Nha Nhac, meaning “elegant music”, refers to a wide range of musical and dance styles
performed at the Vietnamese royal court from the fifteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Nha Nhac
was generally performed at the opening and closing of ceremonies associated with anniversaries,
religious holidays, funerals and so on. Among the numerous musical genres that developed in Viet
Nam, only Nha Nhac is popular on a nationwide scale and has strong links with the traditions of
other East Asian countries. During Nha Nhac performances, there were numerous singers, dancers
and musicians dressed in gorgeous costumes. Large-scale orchestras included a drum section and
many other types of instruments like wind and string instruments. All performers had to maintain a
high level of concentration because they were expected to follow each step of the ritual carefully.
Nha Nhac developed during the Le Dynasty (1427-1788) and reached the peak under the
Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945). As a symbol of the dynasty’s power and longevity, Nha Nhac became

an essential part of the court’s many ceremonies. However, the role of Nha Nhac was not limited to

universe.
The fall of the monarchy and the decades of war in 20th century seriously threatened the
survival of Nha Nhac and made this musical tradition lose its original function. However, the few
surviving former court musicians continue to work to keep the tradition alive. Certain forms of Nha
Nhac have been maintained in popular rituals and religious ceremonies and become a source of
inspiration for contemporary Vietnamese music.

Volunteering, especially when it’s done on a regular basis, can help you make new
acquaintances. Whether you volunteer for an organisation on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, over
time you will develop strong relationships, typically with other volunteers and staff members.

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 34

Regular volunteers may get these benefits to a greater degree than people who volunteer
infrequently. Consider this: Handing out water at a fundraising run in April and then helping in an
orphanage in November is surely easier to squeeze into a activities aren’t as likely to help you build
relationships over time.
There are benefits and drawbacks to every type of volunteering. For example, volunteering
once in a while is often easy to schedule and is something families or busy schedule than
volunteering regularly in an office. But those more convenient friends can do together. However,
volunteers who take part in occasionally may not feel very connected to the mission of the
nonprofits they support or get to know many other volunteers.
Regularly volunteering, on the other hand, makes it more likely that you will develop a deep
relationship to the cause and to other staff and volunteers. However, this kind of volunteering
requires a longer-term and bigger time commitment. It can also become frustrating if the volunteer’s
duties aren’t a good fit for them.
Still, if people are willing to work toward finding the right fit and making time in their
schedules, volunteering on a regular basis can help them get more out of their efforts, including new
friends and acquaintances.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Firstly, the most common reason for not volunteering is lack of free time (about half of Americans
cite this as the main reason), and is that the volunteer schedules and commitments are too inflexible.
Therefore, a possible solution is to make volunteering more accessible and automatic. If working
parents are volunteering, it is most likely at their kids’ schools, which is a location they are already
familiar with. Employers could encourage volunteerism on-site or in a proximate location.
Organisations could be more flexible in the way they use volunteer work, including work that could
be done at home, or during evening or weekend hours.
Secondly, another very common reason is that people don’t have information about where to
volunteer, or if they do, the jobs are not meaningful or purposeful. While motivation to volunteer can

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 35

vary by age, with younger volunteers more motivated by future preparation (such as increasing
skills, knowledge, and advancing careers) and older volunteers more likely to cite social values as a
reason for volunteering, most people are motivated to volunteer by personal gratification and having
a meaningful experience. A solution would be for organisations who use volunteers to make sure
they are matching the skills and experience of their volunteers to the roles they have available.
Making copies and coffee are certainly not meaningful to most. Some organisations have a short
interview process where they discuss the background of the potential volunteer to closely match it
to the needs they have.

Read the passage and choose the best answers to the questions.
Think back to the last time you helped someone, whether it was holding the door open for a
classmate or raking your elderly neighbour’s leaves. While you were doing it and afterward, how did
you feel? We are going to make a safe bet you felt happy and more positive about life. That’s
because the fastest way to feel joy is serving others.
An old Chinese proverb tells it perfectly, “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want
happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want
happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
But serving does not just make your heart feel good. Studies have shown that there are mental and
physical health benefits to serving, like reducing depression, lowering blood pressure and
lengthening your lifespan.
Putting other people’s needs before yours also strengthens your relationships. It connects you with
the one you’re serving, and if that someone is someone you know, it creates a stronger bond with
them.
It also enriches other people’s lives. Taking time out of your busy day to even bring a friend a bowl
of soup when they are sick makes them feel better and can uplift them during their rough time.
And perhaps the best benefit of service is the chance of that person paying it forward. If you help
someone, they are more likely to do something nice for someone else that day. Your one act of
kindness could have a major domino effect.

D. Without your act of kindness, other people can still behave well.

D. Bringing your neighbour a bowl of porridge when they are sick

. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
New research suggests that volunteers aren’t just helping the communities they serve. People
who volunteer actually experience a boost in their mental health - good news at a time when more
than a third of Americans are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression.
In a study published this year in the Journal of Happiness Studies, researchers examined data
from nearly 70,000 research participants in the United Kingdom, who received surveys about their
volunteering habits and their mental health, including their concerns in everyday life, every two
years from 1996 to 2014.
Compared to people who didn’t volunteer, people who had volunteered in the past year were
more satisfied with their lives and rated their overall health as better. Additionally, the researchers
found that people who volunteered more frequently experienced greater benefits: Those who
volunteered at least once a month reported better mental health than participants who volunteered
infrequently or not at all.
But does volunteering make people happy, or are happy people simply more likely to
volunteer? The researchers found the same results even when they considered participants’ initial
levels of well-being before they started volunteering. In other words, people who started to
volunteer became happier over time.
Although it’s true that people who are happier do tend to spend more time volunteering, the
current study suggests that you don’t need to already feel happy in order to benefit from it. In fact,
some research suggests that people who start out with lower levels of well-being may even get a
bigger boost from volunteering.
Why does volunteering support our mental health? According to Ricky Lawton, associate
director at Simetrica Research Consultancy and lead author of the paper, a combination of factors is
likely at play. First, volunteering appears to be intrinsically rewarding- when we help others, we tend
to experience what researchers call a “warm glow.” Second, volunteering is likely to help boost our
sense of social connection. In particular, for older adults, volunteering can be a way to stay
connected to others after retirement.
Finally, volunteering can be a way to build professional skills and try out leadership
opportunities, which is especially relevant to young adults. In the current study, the researchers

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 40

found that participants ages 16-24 and 55-74 were especially likely to benefit from volunteering,
perhaps because of the opportunity to build social connections and new skills.

From retail goods to food, 3D printing technology promises to change the way we think
about everyday things. It’s difficult to predict what impact it will have on manufacturing but,
whatever the exact effects, they are likely to be deep and long- lasting.
Also known as “additive manufacturing”, 3D printing refers to processes where an object is
put together by layering materials under programmed commands. Objects an be of almost any
shape and are produced from digital model data or other electronic data sources, such as an
Additive Manufacturing File.

The invention of 3D printing opens the way for manufacturers to significantly reduce the
production cost of their goods by eliminating many steps in the manufacturing process and the
complete production process, with 3D printing, what would have initially been a series of stages of
production could be cut down to a designer at one end, and the printer or “manufacturer” at the
other.
Such reductions in the manufacturing process could affect both regional and international
production networks, possibly resulting in reduced capital requirements, warehousing and other
logistics and transportation needs. This change in production systems could potentially alter the
very idea of nations’ economic security. It could; for instance, destroy countries’ carefully laid
development plans for creating employment and investment in logistics and warehousing, regardless
of economic development level. What might happen to global production networks under such an
influential technology?

A. It could result in reduced international trade.
B. It could lead to a decline in the use of digital model data.
C. It might encourage countries to invest more in logistics and warehousing.
D. It might have negative effects on the existing production networks.
Question 33: What can be inferred about the potential effects of 3D printing on manufacturing?
A. The impacts of 3D printing on manufacturing are uncertain and unserious.
B. 3D printing has the potential to greatly reduce production costs.
C. 3D printing will not affect the traditional stages of production in manufacturing.
D. 3D printing is primarily used for producing digital model data.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each
of the questions.
We all suffer from too little sleep from time to time, some more than others. There are many
possible reasons, depending on our age, genes and sleep habits; but another possible culprit is using
technology before going to sleep.
A 2011 survey found nine in ten people use some form of electronics in the hour before bed.
This ranges from playing video games and watching television, to using light-emitting e-readers,
tablets and smartphones. While these devices, especially light-emitting e-readers, seem harmless
enough, the light they emit may affect our sleep patterns and leave us feeling tired the next day.
Light exposure can directly influence sleep and the timing of sleep by acting on our body clock.

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 45

One way light exposure may impact sleep and our body clock is by affecting the production
of melatonin during the night. Melatonin is a “sleep” hormone produced in the brain. Melatonin
levels begin to increase around two hours before bed (around 9 p.m. for someone who usually goes
to bed around 11 p.m.) to help to sleep. Exposure to light during the evening hours can inhibit the
production of melatonin, so that melatonin production happens later in the night. Using the example
above, melatonin levels may only start to increase around 10 p.m., which may delay your sleep until
around midnight.
The most obvious thing to do is to reduce the use of light-emitting electronic devices prior to
bedtime, or at least within the hour before sleep. For adolescents and adults who are less willing to
stop using electronic devices, there are some applications that can change the amount of blue light
that is emitted. It’s probably not a good idea to rely on these applications too heavily. My advice
would be to buy a book or choose an e-reader that doesn’t emit light. Try to reduce the amount of
light you are exposed to in the evenings. Who knows, you may even find it more relaxing!

Question 37: According to paragraph 3, how does light exposure affect sleep and the body clock?
A. It increases melatonin production, leading to better sleep.
B. It makes the production of melatonin happen earlier.
C. It prevents the production of melatonin, delaying sleep.
D. It has no effect on sleep patterns.
Question 38: The word “inhibit” in paragraph 3 is opposite in meaning to _________.
A. decrease B. prevent C. encourage D. impede

electronic devices on their sleep?
A. avoid using any electronic devices before bedtime.
B. rely on applications that increase the amount of blue light.
C. use light-emitting e-readers with reduced brightness.
D. read physical books or e-readers that don’t emit light.
Question 40: Which of the following can be inferred about melatonin production?

The 21st century has become another important century for inventions and discoveries. We are
only in the 2nd decade of this century currently but we have already witnessed many big innovations
that have drastically changed our way of living. Bluetooth technology, broadband internet, artificial
heart, genetic engineering, virtual reality, 3D printing are some to name a few. These inventions are
changing the way we live, do our things and communicate with others. Even though some of these
developments are in the early stage of innovation, they have a more sophisticated and promising
future. Social media is one of the most important aspects that has affected each person in this
modern time.
According to Heidi Cohen, Social Media are the platforms that enable the interactive web by
engaging users to participate in, comment on and create content as means of communicating with

GV: NGHIÊM THỊ HỒNG NGÁT. C3 TÔ HIỆU 49

their social graph, other users and the public. The power of social media has changed most of the
things in our daily life. Social media has revolutionized and completely changed the way we send
and receive information. It is more interactive, can be done in real-time and uses a wide number of
media like text, audio, video, pictures, graphics and more. With these sites, sending and receiving
messages offline and in real-time, audio and video chatting, sharing pictures, video and text, going
"Live” to many audiences, meeting old friends and making new ones have revolutionized our way of
establishing connections with others.
There are also negative sides to the innovation of social media and its usage. An increase in
cybercrime, invasion of privacy, security threats, etc. are some of the issues associated with social
networks. But at the same time, social networks are working to cope with the increasing problems
that arise with the improper use of it. With more and more sophistication and versatility of use,
social media have undoubtedly proved to be a boon to connectivity and social interaction between
people in this age of communication and information technology.

While the debate regarding how much screen time is appropriate for children rages on among
educators, psychologists, and parents, it's another emerging technology in the form of artificial
intelligence and machine learning that is beginning to alter education tools and institutions and
changing what the future might look like in education. It is expected that artificial intelligence in U.S.
education will grow by 47.5% from 2017-2021 according to the Artificial Intelligence Market in the
US Education Sector report. Even though most experts believe the critical presence of teachers is
irreplaceable, there will be many changes to a teacher’s job and to educational best practices.
AI has already been applied to education primarily in some tools that help develop skills and testing
systems. As AI educational solutions continue to mature, the hope is that AI can help fill needs gaps

in learning and teaching and allow schools and teachers to do more than ever before. AI can drive
efficiency, personalization and streamline admin tasks to allow teachers the time and freedom to
provide understanding and adaptability—uniquely human capabilities where machines would
struggle. By leveraging the best attributes of machines and teachers, the vision for AI in education is
one where they work together for the best outcome for students. Since the students of today will
need to work in a future where AI is the reality, it’s important that our educational institutions
expose students to and use the technology.
Artificial intelligence tools can help make global classrooms available to all including those who
speak different languages or who might have visual or hearing impairments. Presentation Translator
is a free plug-in for PowerPoint that creates subtitles in real time for what the teacher is saying. This
also opens up possibilities for students who might not be able to attend school due to illness or who
require learning at a different level or on a particular subject that isn't available in their own school.

Each country has many good people who take care of others. For example, some of students in
the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes for the
elderly. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with
them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint,
clean up, or repair their houses, do the shopping. For boys who don’t have fathers, there is an
organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to basketball
games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things those boys usually learn from their
fathers.
Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go and play games. Some of these
clubs show movies or hold short trip to the mountains, the beaches, museums, or other places of
interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of students as volunteers because they are young enough to

I didn’t even notice him. It was a chilly November evening in New York City, and my daughter and I
were walking up Broadway. I was thinking, “Milk, dry cleaners, home”. Was I supposed to notice a
guy sitting inside a cardboard box next to a newsstand? No, but Nora did. She wasn't even four, but
she pulled at my coat sleeve and said. “That man’s cold, Daddy. Can we take him home?"
I don't remember my reply - probably something like, “That wouldn't really be helping him”. Maybe
I made her feel better by giving her an apple. I don't know. But I do remember a sudden heavy
feeling inside me. I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her world,
whether it was birds in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing suffering and poverty.
A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who delivered meals to elderly
people. The volunteers went to a nearby school on a Sunday morning, picked up a food package,
and delivered it to an elderly person. It was quick and easy. I signed us up. Nora was excited about
it. She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how valuable our job was.
When Sunday came, she was ready, but I had to push myself to leave the house. On the way to the
school. I fought an urge to turn back. The Sunday paper and my coffee were waiting at home. Why
do this? Still, we picked up the package and phoned the elderly person we'd been assigned. She
invited us right over. And that day Nora and I paid a visit to her depressing flat. After saying
goodbye, I walked home in tears.
Professionals call such a visit a “volunteer opportunity". Indeed, the proverty my daughter and I
helped lessen that Sunday afternoon was not the old woman's alone it was in our lives, too. Nora
and I regularly serve meals to needy people and collect clothes lor the homeless. Yet, as I've
watched her grow over these past four years. I still wonder which of us has benefited more?
