Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
1 Introduction
1.1 General
The viscosity determination for mineral oils, hydrocarbons and other transparent or
non-transparent liquids that behave like Newton's fluid represents a testing method
often required by the mineral oil industry. The product specifications define the
respective allowable viscosity range. Within the allowable limit ranges, it is thus
particularly important to achieve accurate measurements with an extremely high
reproducibility. This requires the use of a highly accurate viscometer, a viscosity
bath with an extremely high temperature stability and an accurate time measurement.
A number of glass viscometers are available to determine the kinematic viscosity.
The Ubbelohde viscometer with a suspended sphere level has proven to be a device
producing the most accurate measurements. Due to the design features of the unit,
the coefficient of expansion exhibited by the glass at different temperatures has such
a minor effect that it can be neglected.
The Herzog HVU 480/481/482 is based on this Ubbelohde viscometer and uses a
fourth glass tube to obtain an automatic cleaning phase; it is available in two
versions.
• With NIR - Can be used for transparent to very dark samples (order no.
04805-000-XX). When the meniscus is no longer operative due to the low
transparency exhibited by the sample, the HVU 480/481/482 program switches
automatically to the through-view mode.
• With NTC - Used for non-transparent samples or for samples that absorb NIR
(near infrared) or reflect through solid bodies (order no. 04806-000-XX).
NIR and NTC viscometers can be used simultaneously in a HVU 480/481/482
bath.
The Herzog HVU 480/481/482 is fitted with a viscosity bath to receive 2 HVU
480/481/482 Ubbelohde viscometers yielding a measurement range of between +20
°C and +150 °C, with an automatic washing and drying device, electronic time
measurement unit and a program that meets the requirements of our world-wide
clients (manufacture and supply of viscometers since 1977). A special silicon oil is
required as the bath liquid. The unit was designed such that it includes features to
protect the environment (small solvent quantity for cleaning purposes).
Version 21.1E Introduction 7
Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
The Herzog HVU 480/481/482 viscometers can be used as individual units or with
the VISNET data bank software (optional) with a personal computer using Windows.
It is possible to control up to 16 HVU 480/481/482 testing units with up to 32
measurement points by means of one serial interface of a central PC and to
automatically transfer the data to the VISNET data bank. Automatic viscosity index
calculations as well as statistical evaluations can be executed by means of the data
bank.
To obtain testing protocols from a joint printer (optional), it is possible to link up to
16 HVU 480/481/482 units without the need to operate a PC.

3.7 HVU 482 NTC Capillaries (Sensor B)
For the moment there are no special NTC capillaries available for the HVU 482. You
can use the NTC capillaries produced for the HVU 480/481 with an adapter (Order
No.: 108-332).
Note: Only suitable for bath temperatures higher than +20°C.
3.8 HVU 482 with capillaries from the
HVU480/481
At bath temperatures higher than +20°C, it is also possible to use NIR or NTC
capillaries of the HVU480/481, with an adapter(Order No.: 108-332).

4 HVU 480/481/482 Installation
4.1 General
Place the HVU 480/481/482 on a stable laboratory bench. The sample flow in the
viscometer depends on gravity. Therefore the capillaries must be in a vertical
position (90°).
Before putting the HVU 480/481/482 into service, check the data for voltage,
frequency and power rating. The socket for the HVU 480/481/482 must be fused
accordingly. If the supply corresponds with the values on the rating plate, plug in the
unit.

4.2 HVU 480/481 Installation Procedure
Before the HVU 480/481 can be put into service, please follow these installation
procedures:
Note: Be careful not to drop screws into the bath compartment during
installation procedures.
1. Unscrew the knurl screws and remove the silver bath cover plate (4 screws).
Upon removing this plate you will see screws that secure the plastic collars
used to secure the glass baffle tubes.
Version 21.1E HVU 480/481/482 Installation 27
Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
2. With a screw driver, unscrew and remove the plastic collars (2 screws).
3. Carefully place the glass baffle tubes into position. The glass tube should be
centred above circulation holes and in the middle of the metal stabilising studs
on bath floor.
4. With a screw driver, secure the plastic collars fitting them over the glass tubes.
Make sure that the capillary key slot on the collar is mounted so that it points to
the left. This is essential for lining up the colour coded capillary connection
tubes.
5. Replace and secure the silver bath cover plate.
6. Connect all coloured hoses to the corresponding colour shown on HVU
480/481 diagram (see chapter HVU 480/481 Identification Diagrams). Slop
bottle must be atmospheric allowing air displacement when slop is discharged
into the bottle.
7. Volume of the slop bottle must be larger than solvent 1 and solvent 2 bottles
combined (ex. solvent 1 and solvent 2 bottles are one liter each for a total of 2
liters. Slop bottle needs to be 2.5 to 3 liters).
If fast cooling of the regulated bath is needed or the bath temperature must be lower
than ambient air temperature, a cooling system should be connected to the connectors
at the rear of the HVU 480/481 (see chapter HVU 480/481 Identification Diagrams).
To insure meaningful results when using the HVU 480/481 without a cooling system,
the ambient air temperature must be at least 15K lower than the bath temperature. To
maintain a constant HVU 480/481 bath temperature, when using a cooling system,
the cooling system set temperature should be 10K below the required bath
temperature ( ex. HVU 480/481 bath temperature = 20°C, Cooling system = 10°C).
When using common water cooling, it must be kept at a constant temperature and
flow rate to maintain satisfactory HVU 480/481 bath regulation.
Fill the bath with silicone oil up to 2 cm below the top of the glass window. The
glass viscometer is completely immersed in bath oil because of special construction.
Note: Do not fill above the level. Bath overflow can occur at high temperatures.
If the bath temperature is not stable, it could be that there is water in the
siliconoil. The water could be evaporated if the bath is heated to 130 °C for
3 hours.
4.2.1 Cleaning Solvents for HVU 480/481
Do not use acetone as a cleaning solvent. Acetone destroys the Viton seals used in
the HVU 480/481. In concentrations of 50% or less, aromatics can be used for
cleaning solvent material. We recommend 50% aromatic (ex. Toluene) mixed with
28 HVU 480/481/482 Installation Version 21.1E
Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
cleaning solvent. The IBP for cleaning solvent should be higher than the HVU
480/481 bath temperature.
4.3 HVU 482 Installation Procedure
Before the HVU 482 can be put into service, please follow these installation
procedures:
Note: Be careful not to drop screws into the bath compartment during
installation procedures.
1. To remove the transport safety device, unscrew the three knurled screws and
loosen the Inbusscrews..
2. Connect the solvent and slop vessel according to the HVU 480/481 diagram
(refer to chapter Hardware documentation). Connect the Solvent-filter (370-
323) in the Solvent-hose pipe. The slop vessel must be atmospheric so that the
air can escape when the cleaning solvent drains into the vessel.
3. Volume of the slop bottle must be larger than solvent 1 and solvent 2 bottles
combined (ex. solvent 1 and solvent 2 bottles are one liter each for a total of 2
liters. Slop bottle needs to be 2.5 to 3 liters).
If fast cooling of the regulated bath is needed or the bath temperature must be lower
than 60°C, a cooling system should be connected to the connectors at the rear of the
HVU 482 (see chapter Hardware documentation).
To insure meaningful results when using the HVU 482 without a cooling system, the
ambient air temperature must be at least 55°C lower than the bath temperature. To
maintain a constant HVU 482 bath temperature, when using a cooling system, the
cooling system set temperature should be 15°C below the required bath temperature
(ex. HVU 482 bath temperature = -20°C, Cooling system = -35°C) and the cooling
liquid flow should be constant.
When using common water cooling, it must be kept at a constant temperature and
flow rate to maintain satisfactory HVU 482 bath regulation.

Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
Fill the bath with silicone oil 04341-000-00. Use the filling gauge with switched off
HVU482 and removed Viscometers, to fill to the correct level.
Oil may spill over at a bath temperature of +100°C when more oil is filled in.
The glass viscometer is completely immersed in bath oil because of special
construction.
Note: Do not fill above the level. Bath overflow can occur at high temperatures.
Despite extensive constructional measurements it is not possible to avoid that the
silicone oil will absorb humidity. Therefore it is necessary to heat up the bath to
100°C after about 40 operation hours (depending on the bath temperature and the
atmospheric humidity) – refer to chapter Removal of the humidity in the
thermostated bath by heating.
4.3.1 Solvents for HVU 482
The IBP for cleaning solvent should be higher than the HVU 482 bath temperature.
The materials which are in contact with the solvent are brass, Kalrez and Teflon.
Therefore nearly every solvent is possible.
e.g. Aceton, Toluol, n-Heptan, benzine
Note: Humidity (water) in the solvent can settle in the capillary such leading to
unprecise measuring results. Therefore make sure that either dry solvent is used or
the solvent is dryed with a molecular sieve.

To fill the drying tubes with the drying beads loosen the knurled nut and take out the
disk and the filter.
Drying Filter Disk Knurled nut
tubes
Then fill the drying tube with the drying beads and remove the filter, the disk and the
nut.
As the drying beads have only a certain absorbing capacity, it is necessary to
exchange them once in a while (refer to chapter “Maintenance of the drying tubes”).
Note: There are drying beads of different qualities on the market. If the
water absorbing capacity of the drying beads is not sufficient, ice
will form in the thermostated bath and the capillary tube. Ice in the
capillary tube will lead to deviations in the measuring results.

4.3.3 Installation of the drying tubes
Install the dry tubes as shown in the picture.
4.4 Connection of a slop sensor
(Accessory)
To prevent an overflow of the slop container it is neccessary to use a slop sensor. The
plug for the slop sensor is at the rear panel of the unit.
4.4.1 Not networked units with slop sensor
After the connection of the slop sensor the last step is to change the parameter “Slop
Sensor” to “Yes”.
4.4.2 Several units with one common used slop sensor
Are several units supposed to use one slop sensor, the slop sensor is connected to the
Master unit. The other units have to be configured as slave and networked with the
Master (see chapter 4.6).
Afterwards it is necessary to change the parameter “Slop Sensor” to “Yes”.
4.4.3 Networked units with own slop sensor
Are networked units supposed to use own slop sensors, it is necessary to make a
hardware modification.
This modification is to be done by an service engineer. The modification is to
connect by an wire Pin 4 and Pin 33 of the 37 Pin plug to the CPU board 607-084.
Afterwards it is necessary to change at all units the parameter “Slop Sensor” to
“Yes”.
Attention: All units which have not the modification will use the information
of the slop sensor which is connected to the master unit !

jumpers must bridge the pins WP1; pins WP2 are thus bridged for the slave
operation. Please make sure that only one testing unit is coded as "master"
when several linked testing units are used.
4.6 Connection between HVU 480/481/482
and printer
A printer can be connected to the analysis unit HVU 480/481/482 to print the test
results. This requires only a standard printer with a parallel printer connection and
the expanded IBM character set.
The connection between the printer and the parallel interface (D-SUB 25P) at the
back of the HVU 480/481/482 must be made using cable no. 626-029. (The
centronics cable usually used for PC’s cannot be used to connect the printer to the
HVU 480/481/482).

6.2 Sample Identification
Alphanumeric signs can be entered to identify sample tests. The keyboard is
constructed in such a way that numbers can be entered directly while letters must be
selected with the "up" and "down" arrow keys (see chapter Identification Diagrams)).
The "up" and "down" arrow keys scroll through all possible letters. Pressing the
arrow "right" key enters the selected letter and moves the cursor one step to the right.
When numbers are keyed in, the cursor automatically moves to the right. Characters
can be deleted with the arrow "left" key. Up to 14 characters can be entered.
Example: Input "Tank 1520" as the sample number.
The letters for "Tank" are selected by scrolling through all the letters with the "up"
and "down" arrow keys. After each individual character the arrow "right" key is
pressed to enter data and move the cursor to the next position.
The numbers are entered directly by pressing them on the numeric keypad.
Incorrect characters can be deleted by using the arrow "left" key.
Activation of the "start" key will move to the next parameter.

6.3 Programming of parameters
This program is used to determine the need to change any of the specific parameters.
These changed parameters are valid only for one test. All program parameters return
to their original values, when the operator leaves the program menu or presses the
STOP key. In other words, the parameters must be programmed again in the program
menu.
Since there is no need to change these parameters often, they are listed in a sub-
menu. The right-arrow key must be used to move to "Yes" to activate said sub-menu.
Thereafter, the arrow-up key can be moved to reach the sub-menu. The definitions of
the parameters are given in chapter xx.

6.4 Bath heating?
Only important for the HVU 482!!
When the bath temperature is below the dew point there is the risk of water
formation. As long as the HVU 482 is switched on, the dewiness can be avoided.
Therefore it is recommended to heat the thermostated bath above the dew point
before it is switched off.
If the question displayed is answered with “yes”, the thermostated bath is heated
automatically at the end of the measuring cycle.
You can choose in the parameter program whether this question shall be displayed in
the start menu.
6.5 Start of testing procedure
Press the START key again.
The testing process does not begin right away; the question "Start Test?" is displayed
first. Press the STOP key to abort the starting procedure.

Test start ?
Press the START key again, when the testing is to be carried out without checking
the programming. The display shows the capillary constants and the status for the left
and the right measurement station as well as the bath temperature. A blinking bath
temperature light indicates that the programmed bath temperature has not yet been
reached. The measurement procedure (tempering, measuring) begins only after the
proper bath temperature has been reached.
6.6 Aborting the viscosity measurement
The measurement procedures of the HVU 480/481/482 can be aborted any time
during the viscosity analysis by pressing the STOP key. The display shows "Abort
test?". The display itself does not abort the test; this is achieved by pressing the
STOP key again. When it is nevertheless necessary to test the sample again, it will be
necessary to remove the capillary tube connection hoses to provide a fluid level
balance for the sample to be tested.
When the test was aborted during the cleaning cycle, the solvent located in the
system is piped under pressure to the slop container. However, the capillary tubes as
well as the cleaning system are not clean. Accordingly, the cleaning phase must be
activated prior to the next measurement.

Press the START key, when the measurement is to be continued.
6.7 Viscosity measurement procedure
The bath temperature stabilizes at the earlier established value after the viscosity
measurement has been started. The capillary tube type (sensor A or B) is recognized
automatically. As soon as the bath temperature is reached, the tempering period
begins to adjust the sample to the bath temperature. To obtain a faster tempering of
the sample, the sample can be moved during the tempering period; this is called the
"Dynamic tempering type". Particle deposits on the capillary tube can lead to
erroneous measurement results; this applies in particular to black samples. It will be
necessary to use the static tempering type in this case.
The measurement cycle is repeated until two sequential measurement results are
within the programmed tolerance (see chapter Programming Analysis Tolerance).
The flushing and drying process begins after the viscosity measurement. The
cleaning of the capillary tubes can be programmed such that two different solvents
are used sequentially. Air is used for the drying process.
The cleaning system consists of 14 solenoid valves, one vacuum pump and a com-
pressed air pump (see chapter Cleaning Cycle).
6.8 End of test
After the viscosity has been measured, it will be possible to display the viscosity of
the sample as well as all flow periods and to print a test protocol.
These functions are available prior to the start of a new measurement phase.
6.8.1 Display of viscosity and flow periods
he already concluded flow periods can still be indicated on the display during other
measurements or after the measurement. The flow periods can only be displayed,
when the program is in the PROGRAM mode.
1. Activate "PROGRAM" by pressing the "M" key.
2. Select the right or left capillary tube by pressing the left-arrow or right-arrow
key.
3. To display other flow periods, press the up-arrow or down-arrow key.
40 Program Measurement Version 21.1E
Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
6.8.2 Printing test results
The test results can be printed on a printer either automatically or on request by the
operator (see chapter Printer up to chapter Printing Viscosity Results). It is also
possible to print several copies, if required. The operator can choose between a
"standard protocol" and an "expanded protocol" (see chapter Print). The expanded
protocol is used automatically and "*" is printed after the word viscosity, when no
measurement value met the tolerance requirements. This indicates that the viscosity
was determined as the mean value of all measurement periods. Possible error
messages are also printed in the expanded protocol.
When selecting the parameter "automatic printing", the printing occurs prior to the
cleaning cycle immediately after the viscosity determination.

7.1 General information
The parameter menu is selected by pressing the "M" key. Four user-defined
programs can be established with this program. The program to be changed is
selected by pressing the program key "P".
The parameters are blocked when a measurement phase has started. The capillary
constant can only be changed for a measurement point that has not been started.
01 Parameter
Password: ########
The standard password for the HVU 480/481/482 set by the manufacturer is
"00000000" (eight zeros). The use of this password makes it unnecessary to enter a
password to change the parameters. The operator can change this password (see
chapter Change Password) to prevent unauthorized changes to the parameters.
Attention: Should the password become lost, the system can be reset to the
standard password. All of the following steps require that the testing
unit HVU480/481/482 is disconnected from the power supply. Open the
electronic unit and bridge WP1 pins 1 and 2 on circuit board 607-083
or, on older models, bridge WP1 pins 3 and 4 on circuit board 607-059.
The location of the circuit boards is described in chapter HVU
480/481/482 Electronics Overview. Chapter HVU480/481/482
Documentation also contains the wiring diagrams of the circuit boards
indicating the position of the WP's. The unit must be turned on for
approximately one minute. It is now necessary to remove the bridge and
close the electronic unit with a freed testing unit.

7.2 Standard/non-standard
Standard parameters are pre-programmed for the testing process. The message
"Standard" appears on the display, when the parameters were not changed. The
message "Non-standard" appears, when a parameter (with the exception of the
capillary constants, bath temperature, temperature unit, bath calibration, slop sensor,
acceleration due to gravity) was changed. The right-arrow key is used to re-enter the
standard values in this case. The display changes again to "Standard".
Attention: All parameters are reset, when the standard values are re-entered.
For example, bath temperature to 40 °C, capillary constants to 0.1, etc.
However, the term "Standard" has nothing to do with the parameters used to maintain
the standard method; it only indicates that the manufacturer's parameters are used or
not.
7.3 Left Capillary
To enter the capillary constant, press the "up" arrow key and enter the calibration
constant of capillary (left side). The capillary tube constant is the relation between
flow time and viscosity. This value is stamped on a tag that is attached to the
viscometer capillary tube.
03 Tube left
Constant 0.02916
7.4 Right Capillary
To enter the capillary constant, press the "up" arrow key and enter the calibration
constant of capillary (right side). The capillary tube constant is the relation between
flow time and viscosity. This value is stamped on a tag that is attached to the
viscometer capillary tube.
04 Tube right

7.5 Programming Analysis Tolerance
Press the arrow "up" key and key in the necessary tolerance (max. allowable
difference between two consecutive flow times). Measurements will be repeated until
two successive flow times lie within this tolerance range or the programmed number

7.6 Cleaning
Press the arrow "up" key and program whether automatic cleaning of the capillaries
should follow the measuring process. Enter "Yes" with "right" arrow key, "No" with
"left" arrow key.
If no cleaning is programmed, the sample will remain in the capillary tube at the con-
clusion of the viscosity analysis. The sample can then be re-analyzed (at the same or
a different bath temperature), manually removed by suction and cleaned or
automatically removed and cleaned with the cleaning program.
The cleaning cycle consists of 3 base operations: Pre-flush (dissolve) solvent 1,
cleaning with solvent 1 and 2 and drying.

7.7 Pre-flush
After analysis is complete and prior to removal from the capillary, the HVU
480/481/482 can be programmed to add solvent to the sample. By adding solvent to
the sample the possibility of sample material plugging or fouling valves is reduced.
Samples that are wax free or will not thicken upon cooling may not require a pre-
flush cycle. Very waxy or viscous materials may require two pre-flush cycles. For
materials that require two pre-flush cycles, the "cleaning" program should use
solvent 1 six times and solvent 2 at least three times.
Press the arrow "up" key and key in the number of pre-flush cycles. Selection range
is a minimum of 0 and maximum of 2 (each cycle uses 10mL of solvent).
07 Sample disolve
1
7.8 Solvent 1
Solvent 1 must be strong enough to dissolve sample material and clean the capillary
tube.
Press the "up" arrow key and then enter the number of times the capillary is to be
cleaned with solvent 1. Selection range is a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 9.
10 ml of solvent is used for each cleaning cycle. Solvent is added to the four tubes
(air, fill, capillary, and cleaning). Dirty solvent is then sucked into the slop container.
The number of cleaning cycles required depends on the sample material being
cleaned and the composition of the solvent. Two cleaning cycles are usually
sufficient.
08 Solvent 1

7.9 Solvent 2
Enter the number of times the capillary has to be cleaned with solvent 2.
Selection range is a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 9.
Solvent 2 cleans the capillary tube after solvent 1 has been flushed out. Solvent 2
should contain properties that will evaporate completely during air drying.
10 ml of solvent is used for each cleaning cycle. Dirty solvent is flushed into the slop
container. The number of cleaning cycles required depends on the sample material
being cleaned and the composition of the solvent. One or two cleaning cycles are
usually sufficient.
09 Solvent 2

7.10 Drying
After cleaning 1 and 2 are complete, air is circulated through the capillary tube to
evaporate residual solvent. The drying time required depends on the volatility of
solvent 2 at the bath temperature. Ten minutes of drying is typical.
Enter the number of minutes the capillary has to be dried. The range is a minimum of
no drying (0 min.) and a maximum of 99 minutes ( 0 - 99 min.).
Attention: The subsequent measurement results could be erroneous, when the
capillary tubes are not dried after flushing.

7.12 Equilibration time
Enter the tempering period for which the sample is to be tempered prior to the
viscosity measurement. The optimal tempering period is a function of bath
temperature, sample temperature at the time the sample is placed in the HVU
480/481/482, heat conductivity of the sample and required accuracy.
The tempering period can be selected between 0 and 40 minutes.
12 Equilibration time
20 min
7.13 Equilibration type
To obtain a faster tempering of the sample, it is possible to move the sample during
the tempering period, i.e., "Equilibration time". Particle deposits on the capillary tube
can lead to erroneous measurement results; this applies in particular to black
samples. It will be necessary to use the static tempering type in this case.

7.15 Bath Temperature
The bath temperature range from the HVU 480/481 is 20-150 °C, or 68-302 °F and
for the HVU 482 –40 - +100 °C, or –40 - +212 °F.
If the difference between the ambient air temperature and the bath temperature is less
than 15K with an HVU 480/481 and 20K with an HVU 482, an independent cooling

7.16 Bath calibration
The accuracy of the bath temperature also plays a role in the viscosity measurement.
The bath for the HVU 480/481/482 can be calibrated for ten different temperatures
(HVU 480/481from +20 °C to +150 °C / +68 °F to +302 °F and HVU 482 from –40
to +100 °C / -40 to +212 °F).
When a non-calibrated temperature is selected, the offset for this temperature is
determined by interpolation. However, there is no guarantee that the bath
temperature is maintained at the correct level.
Attention: There will be no interpolation, when the tempering bath was calibrated
for 40 °C and 100 °C and the bath temperature was selected at 130 °C.
The calibration is carried out with a suitable calibrated mercury thermometer. With
the help of the enclosed thermometer holder, said thermometer is placed in the bath
in place of the capillary tube. After the bath temperature light stops blinking, the
temperature is read from the thermometer and entered. This new value is confirmed
by pressing the START key and the new offset value is calculated automatically.
This process is repeated until the displayed bath temperature agrees with the mercury
thermometer temperature.
The calibration must be checked from time to time (see chapter HVU 480/481/482
Calibration).

The DIL switch S1 on circuit board 607-084 or 607-063 is used to reset the
temperature offsets to zero.
Disconnect the HVU 480/481/482 from the power supply and remove the hood of the
electronics unit. The DIL switch is located on circuit board 607-63 or 607-84
adjacent to the 9-pole plug (see drawing in the hardware instructions). Switch 6 must
be in the "off" position. Turn the unit on for approximately one minute. The offsets
of all temperatures are now reset to zero. Switch the DIL switch 1.6 to "on" and
close the housing.

7.17 Cooling valve temperature
The solenoid valve (HVU 482 optional) opens and allows the solvent to flow through
the cooling agent distributor of the HVU 480/481/482, when the programmed bath
temperature is lower than the cooling valve temperature.
This function is provided for a situation, in which the temperature difference between
ambient temperature and bath temperature is less than 15 °C, thus requiring a counter
cooling phase to bring the bath to the required temperature.
The initial temperature of the cooling system should be approximately 10 °C at
HVU 480/482 and 20 °C at HVU 482 lower than the required bath temperature and
the cooling medium flow should be constant to ensure a constant bath temperature in
the HVU 480/481/482 with the use of a cooling system (For example: bath
temperature of the HVU 480/481/ = 20 °C, cooling system = 10 °C).
The cooling valve temperature shall be entered as 35 °C, when there is no cooling
system.

7.18 Acceleration due to gravity
The capillary constant is a function of gravitation (gravitation of the earth). The
gravitation exhibits different values as a function of the place on earth, at which the
HVU 480/481/482 is located and operated. The capillary tubes of the HVU
480/481/482 are calibrated for Germany, where the gravitational constant is 9.80665.
The capillary constant must be corrected or re-calculated for other locations
exhibiting different gravitation's.
This display page is only a display and the capillary constant is not automatically
corrected with the changing of the capillary constant.

7.19 Slop sensor connected?
A slop sensor (order number 110-084) can be connected to the HVU 480/481/482. It
is necessary to select "slop sensor yes", when a slop sensor is used to prevent an
overflow of the slop container.
Should several units are used with one slop sensor, the slop sensor is to connected to
the master unit. The other units are coded as slaves and are linked to the master unit
(see chapter Connection of several HVU 480/481/482 units to one printer).
Are the units networked, but everyone has its own slop sensor, it is neccessary to
make a hardware change.(see chapter Connection of a slop sensor)
Comment: A disconnected slop sensor may cause an overflow at the slop con-
tainer.
"Slop sensor no" must be selected, when no slop sensor is connected. When no slop
sensor is used, the slop container must be designed such that the solvent containers
are empty before the slop container overflows. Accordingly, it will be necessary to
drain only the slop container, when the solvent containers are full.
Indicate YES by pressing the right-arrow key. Indicate NO by pressing the left-arrow
key.

7.24 Capillary Calibration
Before calibrating your capillary tubes, confirm that the bath temperature is correct
with a calibrated mercury thermometer. Use a reference standard with a known
viscosity value when calibrating capillary tubes (see chapter HVU 480/481/482
Calibration)).
To calculate new capillary constants, divide the viscosity of the standard by the
average value of the last flow times (having a consistent value).
Const (mm2 / sec2) = Viscosity / Flow time
The viscosity of your standard must have a minimum flow time in the capillary of
200 seconds. When the capillary calibration function is performed, ALL
programmed measurements will be performed regardless of their results.

This parameter is only available in the HVU 482.
When the hours of operation set in the HVU 482 have been reached, the message “air
dryer?” is displayed (HLIS). Now the drying beads and/or the cold trap should be
maintained (refer to chapter “Maintenance of the drying tubes”).
The hours of operation are reset to 0 by pressing the Start key. A successful reset of
the hours of operation will be acknowledged by a short acoustic signal.
7.27 Bath heating?
This parameter is only available in the HVU 482.
Do not switch off the HVU 482 when the bath temperature is lower than +20°C. At
the start of a viscosity measurement there is the possibility to decide whether it is the
last viscosity measurement before the HVU 482 is switched off.
This parameter determines whether the question “Bath heating?” is displayed at the
beginning of the viscosity test.

8 Viscosity measurements
8.1 General
Select the requested program by pressing program key "P". Press the START key
and enter the sample number, if required. Again press the START key until the
message appears. The analysis is carried out automatically. The end of the
measurement process is indicated by an acoustic signal that must be confirmed by
pressing the STOP key. This is followed by a display of the viscosity value.
Note/Cleaning: Do not use acetone as a cleaning solvent at the HVU 480. Acetone
will destroy the Viton seals used in the HVU 480 valve system.
In concentrations of 50% or less, aromatics can be used as cleaning
solvent material. Herzog recommends a mixture of 50% aromatics
(ex. Toluene) mixed with cleaning solvent. It is necessary to
change the Viton hose sockets for the viskometer connection
after 100 measurements.
With the HVU 481/482 the solvent restriction are not valid. In the
HVU 481/482 valve system it is only Kalrez and Teflon used. But
it is necessary to change all HVU481-hose sockets and the filling
hose socket of the HVU482 for the viskometer connection after 100
measurements.
The boiling range of the solvent must be higher than the bath tem-
perature. Solvent 2 must be a solvent that dries easily.
8.2 Drying of the viscometers for the HVU
482
8.2.1 Bath temperature above the dew point
You can also insert undried viscometers in the HVU 482 when you start immediately
a cleaning cycle with at least 5 minutes drying.
8.2.2 Bath temperature below the dew point
When the temperature is below the dew point in the thermostated bath of the HVU
482, do only insert dried viscometers, which have been dried externally with dried air
or nitrogen.
Version 21.1E Viscosity measurements 65
Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
You can also dry the viscometer with the HVU 482 by connecting it to the HVU 482
without inserting it into the bath.
After having run a cleaning cycle with at least 5 minutes drying, you can place the
viscometer in the thermostated bath.
8.3 HVU482 and Viscometer with hose
connection
It is also possible to use viscometer with hose connection in the HVU482. But they
could only be used at a bath temperature higher than +20°C. To connect the
viscometers with the HVU482 it is necessary to use a set of adapters (108-332).
8.4 Measuring result deviations with the
HVU 482
Measuring result deviations can be caused by
➢ Humidity in the solvent => dry the solvent with the molecular sieve
➢ Humidity in the sample => dry the sample with the molecular sieve
➢ Saturated drying beads in the drying tube => exchange the drying beads
➢ Undried Viscometers have been placed in the bath => take the viscometer out
of the bath, warm it up and dry it.

Automated Viscosity Analyzer HVU 480/481/482
8.5 HVU 482 specifics
With bath temperatures below dew point:
➢ Don’t use HVU482 without inserted Viscometers (Capillaries), or closed bath
openings. Humidity will go into silicone oil!
➢ Before switching off the HVU482, bath temperature must be heated above dew
point See also chapter 7.27 Bath heating?
Take care about the fill level of the bath. See chapter 4.2 HVU 480/481 Installation
Procedure.
Take care about maintenance of the drying tubes and removal of the moisture in the
bath. See chapter 17.1 Maintenance work for HVU 482

measurements
1. Switch on the HVU 480/481/482 and press the "start" key.
2. Select a capillary tube, for which the discharge time of the oil corresponds to the
ASTM standard. The following equation applies: kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) =
discharge time (s) x calibration factor (mm2/s2). The maximum discharge time
that can be measured is 1800 seconds.
3. Place the capillary tubes (only dried ones for the HVU 482) in the bath (change
the capillary constant in the parameter menu, if required). Connect the capillary
tubes to the appropriate sensor connection. Pay attention to the colour coding of
the capillary tube connection hoses. The colour code of the plastic hoses must
agree with the designation of the capillary tubes.
4. With the "right" or "left" arrow key, designate the right or left capillary for
viscosity analysis.
5. With a hypodermic syringe inject 20 ml sample into the fill tube (white coded)
to the top filling mark. Make sure not to trap air into the capillary fill tube.
6. Select the requested program by pressing program key "P". Press the START key
and enter the sample number, if required. Again press the START key until the
message appears. The analysis is carried out automatically. At the end of the
measurement process the viscosity value is displayed.
7. The cleaning cycle will begin automatically when programmed.

10.1 Messages of the HVU 480/481/482
An error is indicated by the sounding of the buzzer and the message "Error" on the
display. This message and the buzzer can be cancelled with the key "Stop". Use the
"M" key to bring up the menu "Messages". This menu indicates the number of errors
that have occurred. Using the up-arrow key provides you with the number and a short
description of the errors. The error is cleared and thus deleted from the error list
using the HLIS Software. The table that follows gives a more accurate description of
the error.
When a test was interrupted by an error, the sample remains in the capillary; it can
thus be measured after remedying the error.
When the flushing cycle was interrupted by an error, it will be necessary to start the
flushing cycle again after remedying the error to ensure that the system is clean and
dry.
Starting a test deletes all previous messages. There are basically four types of
messages:
• Messages that have no effect on the testing procedure
• Messages that cause a shut-down of the test
• Messages that require a RESET (the unit is turned off and then on again) to make the
unit operational again
• Messages for checksum errors. With these types of errors, the standard parameters
are set automatically in the respective program.
Comments: Make sure an error message was not prompted by an operating error.
Communication problems (transfer) between the master and slave in the
unit can be caused by external sources; this can lead to a program crash.
When an error was triggered by such a problem, it can be cancelled with
a RESET (the unit is turned off and then on again). Each unit (circuit
board) must have a proper voltage supply. The respective cable
connections should also be checked.
Caution: The power plug must be removed prior to working on the test unit.
The messages are shown as follows:

11 Cleaning Cycle
11.1 General information
Attention: When the flushing cycle was aborted due to an error or a command
from the keyboard, a complete flushing cycle must be carried out
nevertheless. This ensures that the flushing unit and the capillary tubes
are clean and dry.
The cleaning phase for the HVU 480/481/482 after a measurement consists of three
basic steps that can be programmed with the cleaning program function
(CLEANING) in menu "P" or with the parameter program.
• Initial flushing Mixing of the sample with the solvent and removal of the
mixture
• Flushing Cleaning of the capillary tubes with solvent.
• Drying Drying of the capillary tubes with the help of a vacuum.
To program the cleaning functions by means of the parameter program, the operator
must indicate "YES" for the parameter "Cleaning". Press the right-arrow key to do
so.
The cleaning options are identical for a request made from the cleaning program
function (CLEANING) in menu "P" or from the parameter program (see chapter
Cleaning up to chapter Drying ).
A display indicating the present cleaning status of the HVU 480/481/482 appears in
the display when requesting the cleaning program function (CLEANING) in menu
"P". The cleaning function for the left capillary tube can be programmed in the
example shown below. Press the START key or the arrow-up key to proceed to the
next programming function.

11.2 Initial flushing
The viscometer HVU 480/481/482 can be programmed such that the solvent is added
to the sample liquid prior to its removal. The supply of solvent to the sample liquid
reduces the risk of the sample material clogging the valves.
Paraffin-free samples or samples that do not thicken during the cooling may not
require an initial flushing; on the other hand, samples with a high paraffin content or
highly viscous samples may require two initial flushing cycles. With materials
requiring two initial cycles, solvent 1 must be used six times and solvent 2 at least
three times during the cleaning program.
The entered value must vary between 0 and 2 (10 ml solvent are used for each cycle).
Press the START key or the arrow-up key to proceed to the next programming
function.
L>K=0.02916
Sample disolve 1
11.3 Flushing
Solvent 1 must have a good dissolving effect on the sample material and must clean
the capillary tube to a large degree. The entered value must range between 0 and 9.
A solvent quantity of 10 ml is used for each cleaning cycle. The solvent is piped
through four tubes (filling tube, capillary tube, air tube and flushing tube). The con-
taminated solvent is subsequently piped to the slop container by means of a vacuum.
The number of required cleaning cycles is a function of the sample material to be re-
moved and of the solvent composition. Two cleaning cycles are generally sufficient.
L>K=0.02916
Solvent 1 2
You must indicate the number of times the capillary tubes are to be cleaned with sol-
vent 2. The entered value must range between 0 and 9.
After flushing out solvent 1, the capillary tubes are cleaned with solvent 2. The
components of solvent 2 must become fully volatile during the drying with air.
A solvent quantity of 10 ml is used for each cleaning cycle. The contaminated
solvent is flushed into the slop container. One or two cleaning cycles are generally
sufficient.

11.4 Drying
After the completion of cleaning processes 1 and 2, air is with the help of a vacuum
piped through the capillary tubes to remove the remaining solvent by way of
evaporation. The required drying period is a function of the volatility of solvent 2. A
drying period of 10 minutes is generally used.
Indicate the period, for which the capillary tubes must be dried (time in minutes).
The entered value should range between 0 minutes (no drying) and 99 minutes.
Attention: The subsequent measurements could be erroneous, when the capillary
tubes are not dried after the flushing.

Construction Overview
12.1 HVU 480/481/482 Mechanics Overview
This chapter explains HVU 480/481/482 component positions.
The base of the HVU 480/481/482 contains the temperature regulated bath, the air
pressure pump and the vacuum pump.
The top of the unit contains the electronics with key pad display and the CPU board.
The top of the HVU 480/481/482 is hinged like the hood of a car for easy access to
components.
After opening the hood, the side panels can be removed. Behind each panel is a
configuration of piping and 13 solenoid valves for the flushing operation of each
measuring station.
At the front of the HVU 480/481/482 is a glass window used for viewing the
capillaries. Silicone oil is filled to a level 2 cm below the top of the window. When
looking through the window, it looks as if the capillaries are not completely
immersed in the oil. This is not the case. By using glass cylinders and a circulation
pump, the oil level inside the bath is raised to immerse the capillaries completely.
Located on the front control panel of the HVU 480/481/482 (see chapter HVU
480/481/482 Hardware Documentation V1):
• Power control (On/Off) switch
• Three color coded tubes that connect to the Ubbelohde capillary
• Over temperature protection control
• Bath filling port
• Connection for capillary light detection sensor
• One needle valve that controls the air intake for the HVU 480/481/482. This
valve is adjusted by the manufacturer.

14 HVU 480/481/482 Calibration
14.1 General
To calibrate the HVU 480/481/482 bath and capillaries, use calibrated mercury
thermometers (minimum resolution 0.01 °C). Remove capillary from the bath and
place the plastic capillary cover in its place. Slide the mercury thermometer through
the capillary cover hole so you can read it through the bath window.
Note: Make sure that mercury thread in the calibrated thermometer is intact.
If the mercury is separated, cool the thermometer down and then heat it
up, shake it gently if necessary. Mercury thread must be complete (not
separated).
Enter temperature values by following these steps:
1. Operator must be in "parameter" program for bath calibration (see chapter Bath
calibration).
2. Be sure that the bath temperature is stable (temperature display is NOT
flashing)
3. With the calibrated mercury thermometer in the bath, read the temperature
value.
4. Enter the bath temperature from the thermometer with the HVU 480/481/482
numeric keypad (include decimals).
5. Push the "start" key to enter the calibrated temperature value.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 until the bath temperature is correct.
Before calibrating capillaries, the HVU 480/481/482 bath must be calibrated.
Capillary calibration procedures are described in "ASTM Petroleum Products and
Lubricants (1), Volume 5.01". Reference ASTM Designation: D446-89a, Standard
Specifications and Operating Instructions for Glass Capillary Kinematic
Viscometers1.

14.3 Check of Time Measurement
Another criterion responsible for the precision of the viscosity measurement is the
time measurement of the instrument. To check this criterion you need the time
calibration LED (P/N 638-040) available as accessory and a calibrated stop watch.
Attention! Software version (S3/S4) from 4.0A is necessary.
1. Plug the time calibration LED into the female connector of the NTC sensor
(sensor B) (instead of the capillary tube)
2. Switch the instrument off and about 30 seconds later on again.
3. Having switched the instrument on again, the LED will light for about 5
seconds. The extinguishing of the LED is the starting signal for the time
measurement.
4. Now the condition of the LED changes every 600.00 Seconds (10 minutes).
5. To keep a measuring fault, which may arise due to different reaction times
using a manual stop watch, rather low, we recommend to determine the time
in several cycles. The relative uncertanity of the time measurements must not
exceed 2*10-4 [DIN 51562-1]. The checking function is stopped as soon as a
viscosity test is started.

Set the following parameters in the menu Parameter:
1. Number of measurements: 5
2. Language: German
The tolerance given in the measuring program will not apply to measurements acc. to
DIN 51 562.
The start of the viscosity determination acc. to DIN 51 562 is the same as for the
standard program.
Note: If one of these parameters is changed, the viscosity measurements will not
follow the DIN 51 562.

17 Maintenance
17.1 Maintenance work for HVU 482
17.1.1 Maintenance of the drying tubes (optional)
There are 3 drying tubes connected to the HVU 482. Two of them (large connection)
are for drying the air which flows through the viscometers. The third one (small
connection) is needed to press the dried air into the thermostated bath. Thus the
humidity is prevented to get into the thermostated bath.
The drying tubes for the viscometers can be maintained when no measuring cycle
takes place in the referring viscometer.
Please only do maintenance work at the drying tube of the thermostated bath when
the bath temperature is above the dew point. If there is no time to heat the
thermostated bath, replace the filling of the drying tube by regenerated drying beads.
Thus the drying tube will only be disconnected from the HVU 482 for a short time.
When taking up water the drying beads (silica gel) change their color.
Most types of drying beads change their color from blue (dry) to rose (saturated).
These drying beads contents cobalt chloride
Therefore we have now dry beads without cobalt chloride but these dry beads
change their color from rose (dry) to colorless (saturated)
When the drying beads in the drying tube are saturated by ¾, they must be dried
again.
1. To this end take the drying beads out of the drying tube and spread them (e.g. on
a baking tin) in a drying chamber. The ideal oven temperature is 120°C to get out
the moisture
If the drying beads are heated higher than 140°C, they will loose their ability to
absorb water.
2. Fill the regenerated drying beads and reconnect it to the HVU 438.
3. Reset the hours of operation of the HVU 482 since the last inspection of the
drying tubes to 0 by pressing the START-key in the parameter menu on page
interval air dryer. A successful reset of the hours of operation will be
acknowledged by a short acoustic signal.
The drying beads can be regenerated several times. We recommend to replace the
drying beads by new ones at least once a year.

17.1.2 Removal of the moisture in the thermostated bath by
heating
Despite extensive constructional measurements it is not possible to avoid that water
gets into the thermostated bath liquid.
When the thermostated bath is operated below the dew point all the time, water (ice)
will settle at the heat exchanger.
A too high water content in the thermostat bath liquid (silicone oil) HVU 482 may
lead to damages of the HVU 482.
Therefore we recommend to remove the water by heating the bath minimum once a
week. Best case is to this always after using the bath below dew point.
Procedure:
1. If there is no valve between the cooler and the HVU 482, switch the cooler off.
2. Heat the thermostated bath to a temperature above the dew point, e.g. 40°C.
3. Remove both viscometers from the thermostated bath.
4. Heat the thermostated bath to 100°C.
5. About 12 hours heating should be enough to remove the water from the
thermostated bath.
6. Insert the viscometers and let the thermostated bath cool down (Don’t switch off
the unit with bath temperature below dew point).

Documentation
18.1 General
Wiring diagrams and drawings may not be copied either in whole, or in part.
Distribution or access to diagrams and drawings are prohibited to all third parties and
competitors without written consent from Walter Herzog GmbH.
Hardware improvements make changes in wiring diagrams necessary. Outdated
components are phased out of production. If you get spare parts shipments and
realize that the wiring diagrams do not match the delivered parts, please ask for the
corresponding diagrams.
Part numbers with multiple versions like 607-061 or 607-061A exist. The letter "A"
indicates an upgrade. Additional letters like B-C D etc. are hardware versions.
Hardware versions with the same numbers may also be used or exchanged in other
Herzog instruments.
Example: 6269-607-061A with 3299-607-061A (MP-626 board can be used in
MP-329/330).
