Is tourism destroying local cultures?

Tourists are like magic money machines. From the moment they arrive at the airport,
they are happy to spend their money on useless souvenirs. So of course, governments
encourage as many tourists as possible.

But tourism brings a cost: it destroys culture. When I visited Machu Picchu in Peru a
few years ago, it was horrible. There were crowds everywhere. Since then, the
government has tried to control the crowds. Now, each group of 100 tourists has only
ten minutes to walk through the site. Don’t expect to get a deep understanding of
ancient Incan culture in that time!
In Vietnam , there is a traditional type of music and singing called don ca tai tu. Of
course, it’s on every tourist’s list of “things to do in Vietnam.” But most tourists have
an attention span of less than a minute, so instead of listening carefully to the deeply
personal performances, they eat and chat while the musicians are playing. An
important part of Vietnamese culture has become a five-minute piece of background
noise. Before the musicians finish, the tourists are back on the bus, on the way to the
next site.

How can you experience real culture? Firstly, never visit during school vacations.
There’s nothing worse than noisy children when you’re trying to enjoy some culture.
Secondly, read books to get an understanding of the culture before you go. And
finally, explore the country alone instead of in a big group.

Is butter better?

In the past, the choice between butter and margarine was easy. Butter is high in
saturated fat, which can lead to an increased risk of heart disease. And a serving of
butter contains 30 milligrams of cholesterol—10% of your daily limit. Margarine
contains much less saturated fat and no cholesterol. Maybe it tastes worse, but your
health is more important.

These days, the choice is more complicated. Research suggests that a little saturated
fat might not be harmful. Butter also fills you up more, so you feel less hungry later.
So although butter has more calories (100 per serving, compared to around 90 for
normal margarine), you might actually lose weight by eating more butter!

Older and cheaper types of margarine often have very high levels of trans fats, which
scientists believe are worse than saturated fats. More modern (and more expensive)
types of margarine have no trans fats, so they’re much healthier. Just don’t eat too
much—even the healthiest modern margarine contains around 75 calories per
serving.
Butter is one of the best sources of vitamin A: one serving gives you 7% of your daily
needs. Normal margarine contains no vitamin A, but it’s added to some modern types
of margarine to give you around 10% of your daily needs.

Overall, both butter and margarine are fine in small amounts, as part of a balanced
diet. But if you really want a healthy and cheap alternative, try putting nothing at all
on your bread!

Welcome to the world’s deepest gold mine

There are many reasons why people go to the extremes of the earth. But perhaps the
biggest reason is money. You can make a lot of money in extreme places, and one of
the best examples is Mponeng, the world’s deepest gold mine.

This mine in South Africa is four kilometers deep. So for the 4,000 workers who make
the long journey into the mine every day, it’s like climbing down the Empire State
Building ten times. They travel in enormous elevators, which carry 120 people at a
time. It only takes six minutes to travel the first 2.5 kilometers. But if you want to get
right to the bottom, however, you’ll need to walk.

In addition to the official workers, there are hundreds of illegal miners who spend
months living underground. It’s difficult for illegal miners to get in and out of the
mine, but once inside, it’s easy to find a place to hide in the 380-kilometer network of
tunnels—that’s bigger than the New York subway system. The illegal miners often
carry powerful guns, so the security guards don’t try too hard to find them.

Because it’s so deep, the temperature can reach 60°C, so it’s like working inside a
pizza oven. So huge machines on the surface pump 6,000 tonnes of ice into the mine
every day, and fans blow cold air over the rocks to keep the temperature down to a
safer level.
23 Scan the text quickly to complete these notes. Look for names and numbers.

Country: South Af rica

A it’s warm and safe in the mine.
B it’s easy to find a place to hide.
