• Every syllable must have a vowel sound!
This could be :
• a single letter vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y),
• a vowel team (such as ow, ay, ea),
• a r-controlled vowel (such as ar, er, or).
• Remember not to split multi-letter graphemes!
(Such as digraphs, vowel teams, r-controlled
vowels, diphthongs)
• Usually, keep consonant blends and other
common clusters together (such as r- and l-
blends)
• Removing prefixes and suffixes is a helpful
strategy to focus on the unknown part of the
word
