thank you for giving me this wisdom generously without finding fault. I receive it

Note: Comments on some of the verses:

● Proverbs 24:3-4: To live your life in such a way that every area of your
life works cohesively, you must have the wisdom of God. For example,
when you are building a physical home, wisdom will lead you to the right
people to help you, and lead to places to buy furniture at reasonable
prices. That is why the Bible says wisdom is the most important thing. This
wisdom also builds your family, marriage, and everything in your home.
● Proverbs 24:5: I believe that this verse refers to spiritual strength.
Spiritual strength is based on knowing the promises of God and trusting
that God will fulfill to you, what He has promised in the word. When you
are spiritually strong, you can handle life challenges because you have the
wisdom of God inside of you to give you guidance. As you know more of
God’s promises and believe them, your strength increases. Proverbs 3:5
says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths.”
● Proverbs 24:7: “The word wisdom is plural, emphasizing its importance. It
is over the head of a fool; he cannot appreciate or comprehend it. The
gate of a city is the place where city leaders met to judge disputes and
decide the affairs of the town. The fool has nothing worthwhile to
contribute to these serious discussions.” Max Anders, Holman Old
Testament Commentary Proverbs, p. 104.
● Proverbs 24:10: This verse says whenever you faint or gives in under
pressure, it is a sign that your strength is weak. How do you solve that? By
knowing and trusting more of the promises of God. Especially promises
that line up with the situation you may be dealing with.

Note: A Commentary on some of the verses:

● Proverbs 25:3 “Carries on the parallel between God’s ultimate kingship and the
limited authority of human kings. Just as the heavens and the earth stretch far
beyond the limited comprehension of an individual, the affairs of a ruler are often
unsearchable, hidden from the common citizen. It is impossible to read a king’s
heart, and a ruler must be able to hide certain plans until the time is right to
reveal them.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 324, Max
Anders.
● Proverbs 25:15: “Here is a tribute to the power of a persistent, controlled
tongue. Persuading an authority to follow a particular course is one of the most
difficult of assignments, and you cannot do it by threatening. Patience that
refuses to be provoked is the only weapon that can succeed. And it can produce
surprising results. Just as a gentle tongue can break a bone, the most rigid part
of the body, soft words can break down the deepest, most hardened resistance
to an idea.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 212, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 25:27: “Honey is sweet, but too much honey is not good. And seeking
to exalt yourself too much is also unhealthy. Self-promotion is seldom convincing;
it may produce notoriety but not honor.” Holman Old Testament Commentary,
Proverbs, p. 186, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 25:28: “When you won’t control your emotions, you will be vulnerable
to an enemy who can control his. This verse compares the man who lacks
self-control to a city that cannot be defended because its walls have been
broken. And by implication, it makes clear that self-discipline is one of our chief
defenses against calamity.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p.
198, Max Anders.

Commentary, Proverbs, p. 154, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 26:14: “Now the sluggard is found in bed. In fact, that’s the only place
you can find him. He seems bolted to the bed, like hinges attached to a door
jamb. Back and forth he rolls, but he never exerts the energy to get up and get
moving.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 290, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 26:17: “It is easy to predict what will happen if you grab a stray dog by
the ears. You can expect to be bitten! And in the same way, there is little doubt
about the outcome if you meddle in someone else’s quarrel. The word meddle
means “to excite oneself,” a risky act when you are interfering in a situation you
do not fully understand.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 232,
Max Anders.
● Proverbs 26:18-19: “Some people try to cover up malicious deception by
pretending that their actions were just in fun. More than mere practical jokes are
involved here; the activity is hurtful, damaging people like a berserk archer
(Proverbs 26:10) shooting firebrands or deadly arrows. This verse shows that
God holds people responsible to think ahead about the implications of their
actions. Playful motives are no excuse for wounding others.” Holman Old
Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 244, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 26:20: Gossip is the fuel that feeds the fire of a quarrel. Just as the
flame dies out without wood to burn, a quarrel that is not fed by fresh reports of
offenses can be set aside to die a natural death. A similar concept is repeated in
verse 21.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 222, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 26: 28 “Hate expresses itself in a variety of ways. Sometimes it makes
a direct attack, spreading lies to hurt or oppress a person. In other cases, it
resorts to flattery, exaggerating praise beyond the bounds of truth. The velvet
words are intended to lull the victim into complacency just before the trap is
sprung. Either tactic uses falsehood as a weapon to express hatred.” Holman Old
Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 221, Max Anders.

Note: A Commentary on some of the verses:

● Proverbs 27:5-6: “...A rebuke may be painful, but healthy reproof is a way to
express love. Even uncomfortable contact is preferable to no contact or to love
that is hidden (closed up or withdrawn).” Holman Old Testament Commentary,
Proverbs, p. 118, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 27:7: “People often assume that the wealthy enjoy life more than other
people. But luxury loses its thrill when you have too much of it. Honey was the
sweetest food available in ancient Israel, yet a person could tire of it if he filled
himself with delicacies. But the person who is hungry relishes even food that is
bitter. Hunger improves our appreciation for anything that we receive.” Holman
Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 269, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 27:13: “Normally, a Jew was not allowed to keep a debtor’s cloak or
other garments as collateral for a loan (Exod. 22:26-27). But this proverb urges
them to go ahead and take the garment if the person was foolish enough to sign
as security for the loan of a stranger or a wayward woman. Loss of a garment is
a small penalty for a person who would risk his possessions for a questionable,
perhaps sinful, relationship.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p.
303, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 27:14: “As a humorous example of poor timing, this verse points out
the trouble you can get into if you say the right thing at the wrong time. Surely
there can be nothing wrong with blessing or praising a neighbor! But loudly
disturbing your friend’s sleep early in the morning will feel more like a curse than
a blessing.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 210, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 27:23-27: “These verses give a brief treatise on managing a farm, with
principles that apply to any livelihood. First, Proverbs gives the basic command:
pay attention to your flocks and herds! They need too much care, and too many
things can go wrong, to assume that they can be neglected. Any occupation
demands constant attention. Riches do not endure forever; if you do not continue
to monitor your investments, your wealth can disappear quickly. Even a king’s
crown is not automatically secure; maintaining a kingdom requires constant
vigilance. And if these seemingly impregnable sources of wealth can be lost, then
surely a farmer cannot afford to neglect his herds.” Holman Old Testament
Commentary, Proverbs, p. 302, Max Anders.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives
generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to
him” James 1:5, (NIV).

PRAYER FOR WISDOM: Father, I ask that you give me wisdom regarding (name
the situation/be specific) to know what to say, what to do, and where to go. I
thank you for giving me this wisdom generously without finding fault in me. I
receive it by faith. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Note: A Commentary on some of the verses:

● Proverbs 29:1: “One day the wicked really will fall though justice may seem
silent now. A person who is stiff-necked and hardened, so that he refuses to
repent even in the face of repeated rebukes, will eventually reap the
consequences of his actions. When the judgment hits, it will come abruptly, and
there will be no remedy that can reverse it.” Holman Old Testament
Commentary, Proverbs, p. 118, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 29:17: “A parent who makes the effort to restrain and train his son will
reap two benefits. First, your son will give you the peace of being able to relax,
knowing that you need not worry about what he will do next. Wisdom itself will
guide him well. Second, your son will give you joy. The Hebrew literally says,
“dainties for your soul,” a metaphor for the joyful satisfaction that comes from
watching one’s offspring prosper and mature in the ways of God.” Holman Old
Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 127, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 29:19,21: “The principle of discipline for a son applies to a servant as
well. In the Old Testament culture, many families had slaves or servants who
were part of the household. The family head was responsible for helping these
family members develop character as well. Words alone are not effective; we
must follow up with action (v. 19). And a person who pampers a servant
produces poor results in the long run (v. 21). The meaning of the Hebrew word
for grief is uncertain.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 127,
Max Anders.

www.spiritualgrowthbiblestudies.com
● Proverbs 29:25: “The writer uses a word for fear that means “trembling, terror,”
unlike the term for reverent awe found in 1:7. When we are terrified by a person,
we are easily trapped or controlled. But when we overcome fear of man by
trusting in God, we will be kept safe. The word used means “to be set
inaccessibly high, to be exalted”-lifted to safety above the reach of human
threats.” Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 96, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 29:27: “Proverbs offers a surprisingly graphic description of the
antagonism between the righteous and the wicked. The word detest means to
consider abominable, to abhor, and is used to describe God’s attitude toward
idolatry and child sacrifice (Deut. 12:31). No verse more clearly expresses the
truth that life is a choice between two paths. A person chooses for God or against
him, and there will always be a conflict between those two alternatives.” Holman
Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 141, Max Anders.

Note: A Commentary on some of the verses:

● Proverbs 30:5-6: “If no person can find truth by his own intellect or power, then
God is the only infallible source of truth. His word is flawless; it has stood the
test. And those who trust him and his word will find that he protects them like a
shield. Because God’s Word is already flawless, we must not attempt to add to or
improve on it or take away from it (Deut. 12:32; Rev. 22:18). Holman Old
Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 348, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 30:21-23: “Here are four people we could do without; they cause so
much trouble that the earth trembles! A servant who moves directly into the role
of king has neither the training nor experience to rule well. The fool who is full of
food will be even more insensitive to the needs of those around him. A woman
desperate for love will bring her deep hurts into marriage and find it hard to relate
properly to her husband. And a maidservant who steps into the place of her
mistress will surely flounder, perhaps because she does not know how to direct
others. Holman Old Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 350, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 30:29-31: “Agur uses three impressive animals as comparisons to the
noble appearance and regal bearing of a king. The lion, of course, has the
reputation of being king of the beasts, dominant over the others. Roosters, too,
have a natural strut that reminds one of the pomp of a king’s court. The he-goat
at the head of a flock of goats puts on an aggressive front intended to show any
rivals that he is in charge. A king surrounded by his army instinctively takes on a
similar appearance, acting the part of the proud and noble monarch.” Holman Old
Testament Commentary, Proverbs, p. 351, Max Anders.

● Strife: Quarrel; Contention in anger; enmity

Note: A Commentary on some verses:

● Proverbs 31:10: “The opening verse states the theme of the poem: the
value of a good wife, a wife of noble character. The Hebrew word noble
character implies strength and ability and is repeated in verse 29. Ruth
was called a noblewoman (Ruth 3:11)”. Holman Old Testament
Commentary, Proverbs, p. 361, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 31:11-12: “The husband appears in verses 11-12 and verses
23,28. He can have full confidence in such a wife; literally, “His heart trusts
in her.” She is completely faithful in every area, and one result is that her
husband lacks nothing of value”. Holman Old Testament Commentary,
Proverbs, p. 361, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 31:26: “In verse 20, she is a giver of help; here she is a giver of
wisdom, like Lady Wisdom in chapter 1. She shares her wisdom with her
husband and instructs her children and servants” Holman Old Testament
Commentary, Proverbs, p. 363, Max Anders.
● Proverbs 31:28-29: “The wife and mother in this home receive the
appreciation she deserves, as her family acknowledges how she has
blessed their lives. The children call her blessed, implying that she sees
her lot in life as a gift from God, not as an intolerable burden. Her positive
approach and zest for life inspire her husband to echo the children’s
praise. He tells her that many women are noble (same word as in v. 10),
but she surpasses them all-she is the best.” Holman Old Testament
Commentary, Proverbs, p. 363, Max Anders.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE PROVERBS 31 WOMAN

I admire this woman and I am so thankful that she is a godly example to

many of us. I believe that this is a lifetime journey. She did not become a
virtuous woman overnight. It takes time and years of intentionally spending
time in prayer and the word to become a virtuous woman.

Also, you don’t have to be a wife to be a virtuous woman. Any woman who
loves God and his Word and acts on the word of God can become a
virtuous woman.

Note: I have more to share with you about how we can become virtuous
women based on what we learned in the book of Proverbs. Also, I will
share with you the prayer that I pray over myself based on Proverbs 31.

I am creating a short E-book that I believe will be helpful to you. The

E-book will be available on my website,
