Semiotic Coding

in Chapter 9 of Adaptation
(Jonze, 2002)

Please complete activities 1-4

as directed by your teacher.
After each stage, you will be
sharing responses and ideas
with the class.

1. Watch the short video clip played to you in mute, and make observations
regarding what you see in the table below. Use your knowledge of semiotics
and visual grammar to guide your analysis of the cinematic choices, and make
some interpretations.

NOTE: Make the observations as you watch. You will be given time in class to complete the
analysis.

2. Write an individual paragraph response about the semiotic coding evident in the
film. In what ways are the semiotic choices significant to the movie overall?
3. In your book, write a voiceover that would be suitable to fit this scene. You can
choose to take on the role of Susan or her husband. It should be about one
minute in length when spoken.

4. Present your voiceover dialogue to the class – some will be recorded to use as
examples for next year’s students!
